Skateboards and longboards mainly differentiate in size. Skateboards typically have the same shape and size of wheels and trucks, with only minor differences for either street or park settings. Longboards vary greatly in sizes and purposes. Your typical longboard is design for commuting and comfort in the ride. More purpose built longboards like downhill boards and dancing boards have very different aspects in their wheel choice, shapes, stiffness and length. For Lotfi's style of longboard dancing, having a LONG board helps to give the rider tons of space to move around for footwork and the deck itself has flex to create a responsive and agile ride. Trucks tend to be rather wide (180mm) and wheels stay around the 65mm-70mm range. Loose trucks allow for quick turning and fast transitions, while the wheels allow for a balance of gripping and sliding to allow for a variety of maneuvers. Downhill/freeride oriented longboards are strictly stiff. Flex is terrible for high speeds since it may end up pushing the rider off the board when hitting a bump or debris. The wheels sizes typically range from 70mm-80mm, with sharp lips on the wheels to give them maximum grip for high speed cornering and drifting. Truck sizes also vary greatly, mainly depending on the type of road the rider is skating. 180mm is still standard for most roads, but really turny and curvy roads work better with narrow trucks of around 125mm-165mm to give the rider maximum grip.
