This week, we're going for a true freestyle classic: the walk the dog. This thing's been around since the 1970s, and if you've watched any freestyle routines or videos, you'll probably have seen a bunch of these between the "actual tricks". They're incredibly common and massively important, so spend a bit of time getting this one down.
The in-depth breakdown and photo sequence can be found on the website at freestyletrick... for those who find stills and text easier to follow.
Anyway. Like, share, subscribe, do whatever you please. If there's any trick in particular you'd like a tip for, drop a comment below and we'll see what we can do. And if you appreciate these tricktips, please buy us a coffee at www.buymeacoff... to help keep this project going!

Freestyle is so humbling and since I'm a complete newb, I got riding, kickturns, carving down to a level where I feel comfy and know everyday I'm just practicing tic tacs, monster walks, endovers and walk the dogs! Thanks Tony, you're a gem! I realized I don't have to give in the rush to learn ollies as fast as possible - freestyle is sooooo fun. Nothing beats going into flow state and connecting a couple.
@FreestyleTricktips

Yeah, I've never understood the fuss over ollies. If the choice was only do footwork for the rest of your life or be able to ollie waist-high without effort on command, I'm taking the footwork, thanks.

@@FreestyleTricktips thanks for your reply! I was starting to get quite comfortable and getting there but i had to stop because the griptape was starting to pierce a hole in the shoe pretty fast haha i'm new to freestyle, i wonder now if freestylers use different shoes with more solid soles? 😅
@FreestyleTricktips
@FreestyleTricktips 3 года назад
@@mrz3r068 I have to be very picky about the shoes I use for this precise reason. Some shoes just disintegrate with footwork! One good tip is to lightly sand down the griptape in the middle of your deck when you first put the board together. That helps alleviate the worst of the damage.

Old guy again - I'm having issues trying to learn walk the dog, the main issue is balance with the feet so close together on a 27 inch cruiser board, with large sticky wheels that roll very easily (the board can easily roll out from under me with my feet so close together, but I just step off if this happens. The analogy is like trying to walk on slick ice, the wheels roll that good). Just the initial position with left foot forward in middle of board and right foot sideways at back of the board is taking some getting used to, but I'm moving too slow to use carving for balance. If I start with the right foot on the nose, the actual 180 isn't much of an issue, the main issue is maintaining balance on the small steps. It's probably figuring out how far forward my center of mass needs to move for each step or 180. I'm starting to get the hang of endovers, finally putting two 180's together, partially helped on the second 180 since I use front side kick turn adjustments for balance and/or to tighten turns if needed, but with endovers, my feet are near the ends of the board, not that close together, so balance is easier. I also had to figure out how far forward to move my center of mass for each endover, so I don't end up leaning forwards or backwards. (I'm moving slow at this point, so I can't can't on momentum to maintain balance on each 180). This may be a case where tightening up the trucks will help, as I have them somewhat loose now for tighter carving.
@FreestyleTricktips
@FreestyleTricktips 3 года назад
Yeah, I think tightening the trucks a bit will help a lot. I was watching someone else who was struggling with walk the dogs and any wobble in the trucks really makes holding your balance through the movement a lot harder.
@nolives

I can sometimes land the first one smoothly. But sometimes I slam down the nose and I definitely have problems keeping them clean 180s and doing it back to back. Getting back crossfoot out if the first pivot always feels awkward.
@FreestyleTricktips
@FreestyleTricktips 2 года назад
Sounds like you're doing one (or both) of two things: 1) not being light enough on your feet. This isn't an ollie trick - subtlety is everything. 2) not keeping your front foot straight. This often goes hand-in-hand with the first point; if you're not light on your feet, the front foot gets caught on the griptape and pulled out of line. You want to keep your toes pointing forward at all times - that'll help you do multiple walk the dogs in sequence and reduce the severity of the "crossfoot" position needed to get back to the nose.

Does the back foot rotate the board initially? Or is the rotation initiated more by the front foot?
@FreestyleTricktips
@FreestyleTricktips 2 года назад
There's not really any rotation created by the front foot - the back foot is doing all the work. When you get it right the front foot is effectively just gliding across the top of the griptape. That said, you CAN push forwards with the front foot mid-way through the walk the dog to generate a bit more forwards momentum, but that's something you don't really want to play with until you've already got the motion down.

What wheels are those?
@FreestyleTricktips
@FreestyleTricktips 3 года назад
They're Seismic Focus. I've worn the graphic off in this video, but I've checked the date, and this video was made before the 95a ones were available, so these would be the 97a ones. You can get them in the UK and Europe at offsetskatesupply.co.uk/product/seismic-focus/ or in the US at seismicskate.com/product/55mm_focus_wheels/ - I personally recommend the 95a ones now. I even did a video all about them when they came out: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Od61CNT9nbU.html

I've been learning this trick for 3 months consistently everyday due to the lock down in my country. Anyway I hardly getting a perfect 180, after each turn my front foot will end up leaning to the right side, as my body also tend to lean that way. I'm regular. I did put my foot in middle, shoulder open pointing the direction I'm going and lift my heel, during the pivot.
@FreestyleTricktips
@FreestyleTricktips 3 года назад
My guess - although it's tough to tell without seeing in person - is that you're not light enough on your feet. If you've got too much weight on the front foot, the board can't spin freely underneath it, and it ends up either stopping the board from spinning enough or the board drags the foot with it a little bit. Another option/potential problem is that your weight is distributed incorrectly across the ball of the foot, meaning the centre of rotation is slightly off-centre. I still get this with backwards walk the dogs a little bit. Both problems should correct themselves in time. Keep at it and I'm sure you'll get it sorted soon!

@gonzo13ist
@gonzo13ist 5 лет назад
Yea, but ever time I do the 180 my pivot foot is upfront on the board.
@FreestyleTricktips
@FreestyleTricktips 5 лет назад
There's a couple of reasons that happens. Either you're starting too far back on the board, or you're not on the right part of your foot as you spin the 180, or it's a combination of both. You can test the first with your phone or something along those lines. If you put one finger in the center and then spin it 180, you end in the same place you started. If you move your finger back before the 180, you end up at the front. The problem is that when you're doing it during a walk the dog, the contact point isn't as small. If you're up on the ball of your foot, you should have a contact patch that's about 4" long. That's the area which has to be central on the griptape. But if your foot is too flat - i.e. if your heel is down - then it's the same effect as having your foot too far back, even if the ball of your foot is perfectly central on the grip. That's a long explanation, but I hope it helps.
