I have a long depreciation schedule (Sole Proprietor) going back many years which Turbo Tax tracks in case I need to recapture depreciation. Can I enter this table into FreeTaxUSA?
@KatieStOresCFPChFCEA
@KatieStOresCFPChFCEA 5 месяцев назад
Hello Wings, FreeTaxUSA offers a section for entering depreciation details for each asset. You can input the asset information, cost basis, depreciation method, and useful life. The program will then calculate the annual depreciation based on your inputs. However, manually entering a long history of data for each asset can be time-consuming and prone to errors. OR If you're comfortable with summarizing your depreciation information, they allow you to enter the total depreciation claimed for the current year and the total accumulated depreciation for all assets. This can be a quicker approach for a long history. You might also want to see if FreeTaxUSA has a help section on this.

@KatieStOresCFPChFCEA Год назад
Hello Wantana, You have until April 18th this year, so don't panic... You'll need a schedule C. Here's the link ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3E7uX6XBblg.html Poshmark provides sellers with an annual sales report, which includes information that can be used to help prepare your Schedule C. The Poshmark sales report contains the total amount of sales made on the platform, as well as the fees and commissions charged by Poshmark. You can use this information to calculate your gross income, expenses, and net profit. You will need to enter this information into your FreeTaxUSA tax preparation software It's important to keep in mind that as a seller on Poshmark, you are responsible for accurately reporting your income and expenses on your tax return. If you are unsure about how to report your Poshmark income, or if you have questions about the tax implications of selling on the platform, it's recommended that you consult a tax professional for guidance.

thanks ... can I ask more question pls if I am separated but my spouse is not American or work in the USA so how can I put his social security number? Can I change to Single instead?
@KatieStOresCFPChFCEA
@KatieStOresCFPChFCEA Год назад
If your spouse does not have a Social Security number, you cannot enter their Social Security number on your tax return. However, you still have to indicate your marital status on your tax return. If you are legally separated, you can file as "Married Filing Separately" and enter your spouse's name on your tax return. If your spouse does not have a Social Security number, you can enter "NRA" (Non-Resident Alien) in the space where their Social Security number would normally go. Alternatively, if you meet the IRS requirements, you may be eligible to file as "Head of Household" or "Single" instead. To file as "Head of Household," you must be unmarried, pay more than half the cost of keeping up a home for yourself and a qualifying dependent, and your spouse must not have lived with you for the last six months of the tax year. If you don't have a qualifying dependent, you may be able to file as "Single" instead. If you're unsure which filing status is best for you, you may want to consult a tax professional or software to help determine the most appropriate filing status for your situation.

Excellent tutorial, but I have a few questions, please? Is e-file through this website or do you need to go to the e-file website and pay them? Also, I'm not sure which package I need. The basic version gives you access to tax preparers, but the pro version gives you more? And if you don't get the defender version and you mess up are you on your own with the IRS. Thanks.
@KatieStOresCFPChFCEA
@KatieStOresCFPChFCEA Год назад
Hello MacMan, Yes, e-file is available through FreeTaxUSA. You can e-file your federal tax return using their website. Regarding the packages, the Basic version of FreeTaxUSA is suitable for most individual taxpayers who have a simple tax situation. It allows you to prepare and file your federal tax return for free, and it also includes basic customer support. The Pro version of FreeTaxUSA (NOT Free) offers more advanced features, including access to tax professionals who can help answer your tax-related questions. It also includes audit assistance and priority customer support. The Defender version of FreeTaxUSA offers additional protection in case of an audit or other issues with the IRS. It includes audit defense services, identity theft restoration services, and priority customer support. If you make an error on your tax return and you do not purchase audit defense services or the Defender version, you will be responsible for resolving any issues with the IRS on your own. However, the IRS does offer resources to help taxpayers correct errors on their returns, and you can also seek assistance from a tax professional or a tax advocacy organization.

@@KatieStOresCFPChFCEA Thank you! So is the defender in addition to the pro or is it included with pro. And can you e-file state from their site for the 15 dollars.
@KatieStOresCFPChFCEA
@KatieStOresCFPChFCEA Год назад
Yes... if you live in a state that requires a state tax return, it's $14.99. There is a pro version for professional tax preparers. I'm not too sure what is offered for them. I think you might be wondering about the other add-ons. FreeTaxUSA offers both a Deluxe and a Premium version of their tax filing software. The Defender feature is included with the Premium version, but it is not included with the Deluxe version. So if you want to use the Defender feature, you would need to upgrade to the Premium version of FreeTaxUSA. You might want to get in touch with them to confirm all this since I don't work for them. Remember, the tax deadline is April 18th this year.

@KatieStOresCFPChFCEA Год назад
Hello Raj, I'm a little confused. You commented under the FreeTaxUSA video, then you mentioned using TurboTax, and then TaxPro. Three different software packages. Here are the steps to enter the adjustment in FreeTaxUSA: Log in to your FreeTaxUSA account and navigate to your tax return. Click on "Income" in the left-hand menu and then select "Miscellaneous Income." Click on "Add a Form 1099-MISC" and enter the information as it appears on your 1099-B. Enter the amount as a negative number in the "Income" column. This will offset the miscellaneous income reported on your 1099-B. Continue through the rest of your tax return as usual. Note that if you're unsure about how to properly report the refund on your tax return, it may be a good idea to consult a tax professional or use FreeTaxUSA's guidance tools to ensure that you're accurately reporting your income and any adjustments.

Hello ! How quickly is the return received if chose to do so by direct deposit ? I know of some tax software that try to upswell you to give you the option of getting your refund faster via direct deposit
@KatieStOresCFPChFCEA
@KatieStOresCFPChFCEA Год назад
[1:51pm PST] @SaintOres.com Hello A Lon Drah, The speed at which you receive your tax refund via direct deposit depends on several factors, including when you filed your tax return, how accurate your tax return is, and how quickly the IRS processes your return. Generally, if you e-file your tax return and opt for direct deposit, you can expect to receive your refund within three weeks. However, it's important to note that the IRS may take longer to process your return during periods of high volume or if there are errors on your return. If you filed a paper return, it may take up to six weeks to receive your refund via direct deposit.

I assume if I am not adding any options, that I don't require entering credit card information? I'm confused how the option of using my refund to pay, since you provide the banking info to the IRS, that assumes freetaxusa is intercepting this money transfer to/from your bank account.

Hello Morrolan, I do not work for FreeTaxUSA but I think they watch the comments section here so hopefully they will chime in if my response is not accurate. No, you do not need to enter your credit card information if you are not opting to pay or purchase any additional services from FreeTaxUSA. The company will only withdraw the amount that is needed to pay the IRS. The option of using your refund to pay is a convenience feature that FreeTaxUSA offers to taxpayers who would like to avoid having to make an upfront payment. When you choose this option, FreeTaxUSA will withdraw the amount of your IRS payment directly from your bank account. This means that you do not need to worry about sending a check or making a wire transfer. FreeTaxUSA does not intercept your refund money. The company simply facilitates the transfer of money from your bank account to the IRS. This is a secure and convenient way to pay your taxes. If you have any other questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact FreeTaxUSA customer support.

Mon 1:56 PM Hello Babanzarah, As a US resident married filing jointly, you can claim the foreign tax credit for taxes paid to a foreign country on income earned in that country. To do this, you must file Form 1116, "Foreign Tax Credit (Individual, Estate, Trust, or Nonresident Alien Fiduciary)." In addition to Form 1116, you may need to file Forms: 1040, 2555, 8938. The specific forms you need to file will depend on your individual circumstances.

Hello Baban, Foreign earned income exclusion is generally best for taxpayers whose income is earned in a low or no-income tax country. It will allow them to shield up to $120,000 (2023 figure) from U.S. taxation, while the Foreign Tax Credit would have little or no benefit since they are in a low- or no-income tax country.

Hello Green, I also sent this to your other comment under TurboTax... But just in case... If you need help from the IRS, it is best to try to get it before November 30, 2023. If you cannot, be prepared for delays and be patient. The tax advocate you spoke to may have been referring to the fact that the IRS is currently operating under a continuing resolution, which expires on November 30, 2023. If Congress does not pass a new funding bill by that date, the IRS will be forced to shut down. It is important to note that this is just a possibility. Congress could pass a new funding bill before November 30, 2023, or they could reach a deal to extend the continuing resolution. However, it is always best to be prepared for the worst-case scenario.

Hi Nathan, It's good that you caught this, even if it was after filing your tax return. Here are your options: 1. File an amended return (Form 1040-X): This is the most recommended course of action. You can file Form 1040-X to report the additional income and any additional tax you owe. The IRS generally prefers amended returns to be filed within three years of your original filing date. 2. Wait for the IRS to catch the mistake: The IRS receives income information from various sources, including employers and financial institutions. They may eventually identify the missing income and send you a notice requesting additional tax and penalties. This is generally NOT ideal, as it can lead to higher penalties and interest charges.

@KatieStOresCFPChFCEA
@KatieStOresCFPChFCEA Год назад
Hello ReMiFa, You should file for a loss on stock trades on your tax return in the year in which you sell the stocks at a loss. You can claim up to $3,000 of capital losses on your tax return each year. ($1,500 if you are single) If your losses exceed $3,000, you can carry the excess losses forward to future years. To claim a loss on your tax return, you will need to file Form 8949 and Schedule D. Form 8949 will show the date on which you sold the stocks, the price at which you sold them, and the amount of the loss. Schedule D will show your capital gains and losses for the year. If you have any questions about claiming a loss on your tax return, you should consult with a tax professional.

What if I gotta file for the last 3 years? Also do it have something in there for working in multi states?
@KatieStOresCFPChFCEA
@KatieStOresCFPChFCEA Год назад
Hello D. Nuts, Yes, you can use FreeTaxUSA to file your past three years of taxes. FreeTaxUSA offers a service to file prior year tax returns for a FEE. Simply select the appropriate tax year from the website's menu and follow the instructions to file your return. However, please note that the IRS imposes a deadline for claiming a refund on past-year returns, typically within three years of the original due date of the return, so it's important to check with the IRS or a tax professional to ensure you're still eligible to receive any refunds. As for multiple states...Yes, if you earned income in more than one state during the tax year, you can use FreeTaxUSA to prepare and file your state tax returns for each state. The process is fairly straightforward - simply select the option to add an additional state return when prompted and follow the instructions to enter your income, deductions, and other relevant information for each state. FreeTaxUSA will then automatically calculate your tax liability for each state and generate the appropriate forms for you to file with the state tax agencies. However, please note that filing multi-state returns can be more complex than filing a single-state return, so it's important to ensure that you're accurately reporting all income and deductions for each state in which you worked. If you're unsure about how to proceed, you may want to consult with a tax professional for guidance.

As an H-2B worker, you will generally be subject to U.S. income tax on the income you earn while working in the United States. You may also be required to file a state tax return if you worked in a state that has an income tax. When preparing your tax return, be sure to carefully review the instructions and requirements for non-resident aliens to ensure that you are reporting your income and deductions correctly. Here's what to do: Use "DIED" instead of SSN: In the field where the Social Security number is typically entered, type "DIED" in all caps. Attach Documentation: The IRS requires proof that the child was born alive to claim them as a dependent. You can attach a copy of the child's birth certificate or death certificate (which often mentions the date of birth) to your tax return. You could also paper file and include the same information.... Good luck.

Thank you for your response. However, I tried typing in "DIED" in all caps in the box, and it deletes it out. Are there any other options to get past this? Also, where would I attach a pdf file of the death certificate?

11:36am PST SaintOres.com If it won't let you, then you will have to paper file and attach the death certificate. Processing time could be a long one.. up to 6 months. You could also try asking support at FreeTaxUSA if there is a work-a-round. The best time to try support would be mid-morning on a weekday. They will be very busy at this time of the year.

I thought so since I think the CRP is specific to MN.... FreeTaxUSA doesn't have a specific section to enter a CRP refund directly. However, since a CRP refund reduces your Minnesota property taxes paid, you can likely report it in FreeTaxUSA by following these steps: Navigate to the section for entering Minnesota property taxes (state income tax section or a dedicated property tax section) Locate the field for entering the total amount of property taxes paid. Subtract the amount of your CRP refund from the total property taxes you paid during the year. Enter the reduced amount as your total property taxes paid. Or If FreeTaxUSA doesn't have a dedicated field for property taxes in Minnesota, you might need to use "Other Income" or "Other Adjustments" to report the CRP refund. Enter the negative amount of the CRP refund (since it reduces your tax burden). Be sure to clearly label the entry as "CRP Refund" or similar for clarity.

Is this better than TurboTax? I’ve used that for the past 14 years.

[12:45pm PST] @SaintOres.com Hello Time, I just finished filming a TurboTax walk through so both are now fresh in my mind. You can't go wrong on either program. TurboTax has a little more upselling than FreeTaxUSA. I think if you don't have a complicated tax return, you shouldn't pay a lot of money to have your taxes done.

Hello Rob, I feel your pain. I did walk throughs of all the major online tax software apps (and I don't get paid by any of them), and they all had tons of pop-ups to up-sell you. That's the trade off for filing for free. I was able to file my Federal tax return with all of them for $0.00. That's a crazy good deal to file your tax return.

Hello I was wondering if I could msg ur privately im trying to figure out how my tax accountant got my New York tax owe to 391 when on my FreeTaxUsa account I owe 540$

Hello Jorge, That would be impossible for me to determine unless I saw both tax returns. You should bring up that issue with your tax accountant, that's why you paid him/her.
