I finally got a chance to fly the F/A-18C. @EscapeLifesGravity flies this on the @VirtualBlueAngels team as the #5 Hornet, so I had to get one to feel like I'm part of the club. The jet is absolutely the most difficult airplane I've ever flown. It feels stable yet completely unstable throughout a lot of its flight envelope. Don't get this jet until you're really confident in your skills.
When you do get the jet, though, be sure to pick up a BlueFire or TrueFire afterburner for it. Larry's afterburners look amazing - brighter than what you can get elsewhere, and cheaper too:

Excellent and very detailed and informative content. I’ve never sat watching the entire video before on RU-vid but as an owner of a F-18c 90mm from Freewing, this is worth every minute. Thank you for going over the channel setups on each mix and explaining the functions of why. Definitely getting the FMS motor and upgrading the servos and modifying the wiring, just as you have it set up. My skills are beginners EDF ( 70mm Viper) for now but the Blue Angels F-18C is definitely one plane I will enjoy flying once I gain more experience and confidence, and this video has been saved for future reference once I’m ready. Well done!!

These are the kinds of comments I put the effort into this channel to see. If I just wanted to make a channel about how well I fly, I could've just posted nothing but videos of me doing neat stuff and having people talk about me. This hobby isn't just about me, though, it's about everyone. Sharing knowledge and information - pushing airframes to their limits so you guys can see what they can do - and what you can do, too. I will *strongly* recommend that you put a lot of flight hours into a variety of jets before tackling this one - the Viper 70mm is a great jet to learn on but this jet is definitely *not* a beginner-level jet. I'd argue it's beyond advanced. You'll know what I mean the moment you put the flaps down and the turbulent airflow starts hitting the stabilators. It'll become a completely different aircraft. It also does not tolerate a CG outside of a certain range - @Airguardian can tell you all about this. I'll actually ping him on FB Messenger and see if he can explain here better than I can. If you're ready for it, though, please do consider using the links in the description - it doesn't cost you anything and kicks back a small commission to me to help fund my craziness. When you do fly it, let me know. I would love to see what you do with it.

Definitely will take your advice on the experience part. It’s content like this that helps beginners like me understand the time and effort required to slowly move up to this level of flying and patiently understand the different mixes, and apply them to this jet and why they’re worth the extra time to setup and use. The flying skills and knowledge (thru time) will one day merge and it will all click in my head. Thanks!

Really appreciate the donation, my man. You're the first person who's done so. ❤️ Definitely take it slow. The Viper 70 is a great jet to learn on *AND* you can set it up similar to the F/A-18, too. Mine is set up just like my Viper 90, with full span flaps for takeoff and crow for landing. Crow takes some technique to land with, so it's probably better just to land without it, but I'm trying to figure out what the best settings for it are. I also managed to get it to high alpha - nowhere near as good as the 90mm can with my mixing, but still feasible with some mix adjustments necessary. The next upload will be the Viper 70 and its setup.

@@DiamondT9 Yo, hi there! Regarding the CG issue that Jon mentions, the F-18 is a pretty tricky jet to fly, and one of the weird things that it does is that if you try to shift CG to achieve neutral balance (typically ideal for best aerobatic and efficient flight performance) the jet becomes laterally unstable before it becomes longitudinally unstable. That is, jets usually become 'tail-heavy' (unstable) in the pitch axis first. this one doesn't, as it first gets super slippery in yaw and roll axis. That's quite unexpected and can surprise a few. In that regard, the factory recommended CG (88mm if I recall correctly) is too nose heavy but if you venture too far aft, you will run into uncommon stability problems. I recommend starting with 100-105mm and potentially build your way back up to 110mm but no more UNLESS you use a gyro. If you use a gyro you may be able to push the CG even further aft and keep the stability in check 'artificially' through gyro use. That's probably not what you should be doing as a newbie though, but keep it in mind for the day you decide to get the Hornet! :) Hope that helps!

Great video, and thorough explanation while flying which isn't easy with this bird. I agree this is one of the more difficult jets to fly because you have to almost instinctually be able to correct things as you learn to anticipate it's unique behavior. I'm so glad you showed the performance of the rudder's tow-in. I have a long smooth runway and this without your rudder mix it will scream down for 400+ feet before you have to apply a decent amount of elevator to create separation. Using the stock setup, I end up applying landing flaps only when I'm on final and don't anticipate making any large corrections. It sets up a nice glide angle, but isn't super forgiving if you have to bail out. Again, fantastic content, just subscribed.

Hey man, thanks for checking out my channel. I do go over the setup for how I got everything to work, so feel free to check that out too. If you have an IX20 or an IX12, the setup file is posted to my GDrive via tinyurl.com/SynRCSetupFiles for ease-of-use. It really is a challenging aircraft. Now that the shakedown is done with and I've thoroughly tested it, I plan to bring it back out tomorrow with my cameraman and get some nice footage of it - and hopefully shoot a landing tutorial as well.

I love this F/A-18 Hornet, and this is next on my list, having seen the Blue Angels yesterday here at Miramar. The Blue Angels have been using the F/A-18 Hornet since 1985 in their annual air show here at the San Diego MCAS Miramar 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing. This Hornet is amazing when seen scale in action it will blow your aeronautic mind seeing all 4 in the diamond formation(s) 18" between all 4 wing-to-wing at a silky-smooth 400mph in perfection. Also, not in inject any negativity, but at 26:48 not only is your Hornet a little embarrassed, but your poor little runway is hurting. I used to fly at a rc club that had thin gravel for a runway, but the airspace was great.

Hey Jon really like your vids, with that being said you"ve made a lot of changes to the jet so i don"t know how it flies if you don"t fly it by the book plus your flying in 15 to 20 plus mph winds which will make it very unstable, a lot of vids are showing that jet flying very well.

I don't fly models stock - this channel isn't about that. There's plenty of other channels where you can see a pure stock setup. You're hopefully coming here to see what models can really do. I'll be bringing this jet out again this coming Wednesday since the forecast is low winds. We'll see how it performs!

So your using the horizontal stab as your ailerons instead of just elevator i see? And strictly using the ailerons as flaps right? for landings and take offs. Or did i see you use ailerons once in the air after flaps up? I have a Freewing Super Scorpion jet which by size is close to same size. Rudders, Elevators, Ailerons look very similar. I've yet to fly mine Motion RC pilot Mike set his up like mine. Your set ups are like wow crazy looking but very interesting. Didn't know that both rudders in help with lift. mixing is a must it seems.
@TwoBrosRC
@TwoBrosRC 2 года назад
Check the setup at the end - I go over all the setup-related info. Long story short, ailerons work as ailerons throughout the flight envelope. They do droop as flaps, though, when commanded via switch F position 1. Full scale F/A-18s use toed-in rudders to get the arse to rotate down and push the nose up. This is largely because of the gear design but some of that carries over to the model.

Hey Jon, I am considering purchasing an F-18 model aircraft and am torn between the Freewing and Eflite versions. I would appreciate your expert opinion on which model would be the better choice. Specifically, I am concerned about the gear design on the Freewing model, which seems to be different from the Eflite version. While the gear on the Eflite model appears to be more refined, I am unsure if this difference is a significant enough factor to outweigh the potential advantages of the Freewing model. From a performance standpoint, are there any notable differences between the two models that would impact my flying experience? Any guidance you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

@TwoBrosRC
@TwoBrosRC 2 года назад
It's weird - hard to describe. It feels very stable while flying until the flaps deploy. I covered this in the setup under the "aero theory" section - but the TL;DW is that the flaps are so huge that they blank out the stabilators a bit and the airflow becomes turbulent flowing over them. You feel it when you bring it in to approach. It's quite unlike anything else I've flown.

I love EDF jets. The penalty of using batteries that provide enough continuous power means building light. The current solution, foamies presents technical issues. Although the plane's total weight is lower, the sacrifices are considerable to note. Foam loosens up, glue joints begin to fail, etc. , etc. , etc.... The problem with EPO and EPS foam construction is that it does not hold up over time. It is also less serviceable. Most reviewers won't admit these items to the public, they don't want to discourage a possible sponsor in the manufacturer. I've been modeling since 1970, and R/C since 1979. I've built, designed, modified, and flown these planes myself. The cost of foam is pride. The landing gear and doors are a place to start my argument; Has anyone who owns a foam jet had issues with landing gear mounts pulling out of the foam? What about getting the doors to sequence reliably?
@TwoBrosRC
@TwoBrosRC Год назад
We've flown a couple of foam models over 400 times each and never saw any structural weakening from flight stresses, and we stress ours heavily. Landing gear is another story. That's a common issue and can usually be resolved by reinforcement with Gorilla Glue. Foam is a bit more resilient than you're giving it credit for. As far as sequencing goes, that's not a foam model problem. That's a manufacturer problem, or a setup problem on your end.
@edwardcase
@edwardcase Год назад
@@TwoBrosRC Point I'm trying to make missed. Foam is easy to mold, and comes with a high price tag, and with that price, I'm simply warning other modelers that there are hidden issues that the price doesn't include. Composites are much more resilient and cost the same. I'm warning modelers about foam, and its cheapness.

@TwoBrosRC

Much easier.

@@TwoBrosRC Yeah I watched your video of the f-18 and it was definitely concerning since I am not as experienced as you at flying yet you were shaking like a leaf in a tree on a winter day(which I often do) I was thinking about going f-18 to save money but it looks like the raptor is smarter due to it's handling even though more expensive. Did you buy the 8S version or do you just have the 6s? I forget. Do you get more flight time on the 8s?
@TwoBrosRC

@@TwoBrosRC Well with the 8S you can do both anyway right even though more expensive? The other one is out of stock and sold out for black friday I guess?

Great vid. My least fav jet. I had two but eflite versions. Super nose heavy. Just not a great stable plane like say, eflite viper, F4 phantom. Hard to describe.
@TwoBrosRC
@TwoBrosRC 2 года назад
A lot of the instability comes from turbulent air washing over the stabilators from the flaps. Without flaps it's quite stable. Once you recognize it, though, it becomes a bit easier to fly because you know what's causing it.

RU-vid is making a bunch of $$$ on this 1 video. Theres a bunch of commercials! 😳

Thankfully I get some of that revenue you're unfortunately suffering through. I personally use RU-vid Red which is ad-free for like $10 monthly. I won't go back lol

This is in the nature of, hopefully, constructive criticism. I watched part of the video but gave up after about 11 minutes. I couldn't understand a lot of what you were saying because of either the wind noise or you speaking too softly or background noise.
@TwoBrosRC
@TwoBrosRC 2 года назад
C'est la vie. Such is life when flying in winds without a windscreen. Thanks for sticking with it as long as you did. I'll be looking into the GoPro Hero 10 Media Mod to reduce wind noise in the near future, and a wireless microphone setup when my bud comes out to shoot with me. That should help alleviate it.

So I got it to fly better but shes still a pig. Im using the freewing inrunner 1900kv on 9 blade but I noticed you like the fms 1950 12 blade nylon blade version due to its lightness. How do youu like that power setup for 6s. I noticed fms also has the 1850kv with metal fan and bigger motor but its aalso 200 grams heavier.
@TwoBrosRC
@TwoBrosRC Год назад
We prefer the 1950kv. It's the best performing motor at its price point and keeps the wing loading lower.

I don't use spectrum so I will match as good as I can. The cg on this plane is very bad.
@TwoBrosRC
@TwoBrosRC Год назад
It has to be somewhat nose heavy to fly properly. If it gets too far back, it becomes completely unstable.

@@TwoBrosRC I'm at 105mm cg. What I'm noticing is I haven't been able to change the behavior of the jet no matter what I do. I'm starting to think the air tunnels for thrust have some quality control issues.
@TwoBrosRC
@TwoBrosRC Год назад
@@dbirds21 That hasn't been our experience. We use the Viper 90mm motor in ours. It's a lot lighter and produces more thrust than the stock FW motor.

@@TwoBrosRC I'm doing it as we speak. I increased my throws. I also reversed my expo a couple clicks. The freewing power is junk. I'm ordering that fms 1950kv.
