FREEWRITE TRAVELER Review: The BUDGET Freewrite!! 

the price point is ridiculous. It is an E-ink screen!!! the only real feature is a good full-sized keyboard, which does not justify much of an increase in price. This should be $250, 300 TOPS!!!!

Great review! Very thoughtfully points out the flaws. I haven’t been able to find a fix for the white keys, but I got a book light so I can use it in the dark, covered it with stickers (to prevent SMUDGES), and got a bluetooth keyboard case to protect the device in my backpack. Really awesome device, use it daily. I hope they use parts of your review for an eventual traveler revision.

FYI - the warranty only covers manufacturers defects so if you drop it or spill something on it you will be paying out of pocket for repairs or replacement.

You can always get the "ghost" model. It will still scratch but you won't see it because the cheap plastic is clear.

Love the idea of it and what it does, but the price is unjustifiable. Now it doesn't have a back-lit screen? My brother in Christ, i have a watch that's back-lit.

How did the traveler hold up? Do you still use it?

As a serious writer you know what I use? Discipline and self-control. If a pen and notepad, or Moleskin doesn't answer my portable on the go, out and about call, and I just REALLY NEED to type, I bought a 40 buck blutooth folding keyboard, lock it to my phone, open an email and type away to my heart's content, send it to myself, and then copy and paste it to where I want and save the money. I'm sorry, but I just don't understand, I have watched several of these reviews, and can you 'temptation free people' not maybe take into thought that your work is far more important than what's going on Facebook, or playing that game??? I'm sorry, I'm just trying to understand, I know if I can do it, others can too. I wish all the best, really I do, but I doubt professional writers use this, as their minds are tuned and disciplined to work. Distraction Free needs just don't exist with Danielle Steel, or Stephen King, Dean Koontz and I could go on. Just sit down on a scheduled time, put the phone on silence, or in a drawer or lol in your car, and tell yourself, IT IS TIME TO WORK. In fact I know you can do it, you all go to Coffee shops to write, right? There's plenty of distractions there, and many seem to write. I used to go to a coffee shop...for coffee, then I learned how to make better coffee at home, but when I would go I saw people there with laptops open...anyway...to each there own I suppose. If you can't afford one of these try a 40 or less bucks on a folding keyboard they sell them on Amazon. It works just as good, might even help you to use your phone for work and get into the habit of becoming disciplined and tune out distractions. ❤ Remember, like Mozart, there's Work to produce! How has yours been working out because mine is a paperweight after being used about 10 times.

If Austrohaus put dedicated arrow keys and had a better, more responsive, screen it would be an absolute necessity for me. But it doesn’t. Because they want to tell you how you should write. Even with the Traveler, the screen would take seconds to populate and the update process can be a nightmare if anything goes wrong. I used it no more than ten times, booted it up one day, and it was bricked by an update. Hasn’t worked for more than an hour since then. I wanted to love this thing so much, I even bought the bigger one to try both out and see which I wanted. Having no arrow keys killed it for me, even though that was a far better device than the Traveler. I hear that they’ve updated it now, but it’s too little to late for me, especially after seeing how their software works. I wish I could jailbreak the device and install Linux on it or something. It’s just too much money to be so limited when it doesn’t need to be. Luckily, I bought the first device through Amazon, so they had to accept the return. But the Traveler wasn’t on Amazon at the time, so I’m stuck with it.

It's the distraction free writing device that will distract with it's glossy, fingerprint nightmare, scratch prone finish. You're welcome.

Another negative of the traveler is the lower-height profile keycaps.

I live in a much colder climate, and have dreamed about moving to a place where I could write outside nearly ALL YEAR. On a different note, how bad are the bugs 🐜?
