So many people missing the point that this song is supposed to be comical, not serious. The bad american accent, the basic lyrics, its obviously meant to evoke a sense of being a beginner japanese student. That's what makes it funny! Lighten up folks! It woulnd't be funny if the japanese was sophisticated
Freezepop are musical geniuses! The absolutely captivating, uplifting, and enlightening feeling I get staring at around 3:41. As the repeated chorus fades and the synthesizer takes over raising each chord progression up one octave while sustaining the previous one. Gently and tenderly mixing the melodic and harmonic echos into what feels like being lifted out of encroaching soul crushing darkness, or breaking water just after a wave rushes over, feeling refreshed and new.
It's like they took one semester of Japanese and then wrote the only song they could with their insanely limited vocabulary. And what do you know, it's a masterpiece!
Freezepop is one of my all time favorite bands, I was talking about Japan. People think they're some kind of holy sanctuary of completely innocent people who bend to wills and enjoy rabid tourists. I can't help but think that the media helps hype it up a lot.
Given the fact that just before that she said that she is bad a tennis and she practices everyday and the song is clearly about how she loves the person she plays tennis with, the statement "but today it is raining, therefore I am at home. You are very cute, I want to to your house." makes sense but it is very basic Japanese.
I think the point of this song is to show that language can be a tool used not only for communicating clearly, but also to evoke a certain mood. I think she used Japanese to give the song a nostalgic Japanese Karaoke vibe. You don't have to understand lyrics to enjoy a song. I know a lot of artists who sing English to be accessible, yet aren't very good at it. Liz was probably going for a 1st year Jap sound, like she shoots for unenthusiastic vocals in her other songs. It's style, not a mistake.

yep. it's about a tennis boyfriend. she goes way over when she speaks it. what I translate is "you are usually awfully lively aren't you tennis boyfriend, it is very good" from the main chorus
It means "to want to do (something)"; ie "tenisu wo shitai" might be "I'd like to play tennis", while "benkyou wo shitai" would be "I'd like to study." By the way, 'shitai' doesn't appear in the lyrics for this song; the first line ends with 'dekakemashita', which is the past or past perfective polite tense of 'to go out (or outside)'.
Actually I do. I have studied Japanese for 4 years and can convince a Japanese person I am Japanese on the phone. And the reason I said my previous comment is because ANY English speaker can speak PERFECT Japanese. Case in point; there are only 5 vowels sounds in Japanese A=ah, i=ee from Greek, u=oo, E=eh, O=oh. Plain and simple.
I have to admit, it's a very cute and bubbily song, and it's great to see a 'popular' band sing in different languages. I don't think she's had any formal training in Japanese, which makes this even more amazing, but I think you can kind of tell that she hasn't had any training, or she hasn't practiced in a while with some of the pronunciation for a few of the words. Still, great song!

actually, I and the translator are both right. You have to know how the language works. There really are no English equivalents for the particles. "Boyfriend of tennis" is pretty much the exact same as "Tennis boyfriend"...you just have to be smart enough to interpret it.

@iceypickett i always assumed just for fun, because they do a darn good french song too. some, but not very many anymore, americans are not usually tri lingual.
It's really funny because of how basic their speech is. Most first graders probably understand what they're saying. Mostly she's just rambling on about how great it is to have a boyfriend who plays tennis. If you want a detailed lyrics sheet, just ask (or look it up; I'm sure you'll only have to go the second or third result, lol)

Neither of us are right, actually. You used a direct translation and I just got it wrong, logically it's "Tennis Boyfriend" as in a boyfriend that likes tennis. Also, this wasn't the comment for you, my comment for you was a lot harsher.

mmkay, if you read my comment, you could probably infer that I ONLY take offense to this song because it's in Japanese and she's saying stuff wrong. I adore her other songs. I ONLY watched this video because I thought it would be amazing because it was Japanese. Before jumping to conclusions, it would be wise to think of all possible reasons.
I realise that but they've created a way of speaking and writing English that most of the world will struggle to understand and more than likely ridicule them for just like all the ignorant people who laugh at Eastern Asian accents. I'm well aware that the Japanese writing systems never have a consonant without a vowel afterwards except for the one exception "N". I don't mind, I just find it odd having to re-learn my own language, and it is happening again now with Asia creating "Panglish".
The examples you give aren't really "botched" English. The spellings/pronunciations of most English words have to be changed if they are to be written with the Japanese writing system.
Actually the pronounciation is so bad that "Kawaii" (Cute) actually sounds like "Kowaii" (Scary). I'm hardly going to moan about it, but it is amusing. I guess it's only the same as most Japanese people botching up the English language. Apple Pie = Appuru Pai Toilet = Toire Ronald McDonald = Ronarudo Macudonarudo You get the picture.
