Freezing and Blurring Movement with Flash | Take and Make Great Photography with Gavin Hoey

Capturing motion can be done in many ways and in this video photographer Gavin Hoey will share his secrets for two very different looks, each using flash.
Gavin starts off with the classic use of flash to freeze movement. He takes you step by step through the process from controlling the light to freezing the action. After that, he steps things up a gear and moves on the showing movement with blur. As you watch along, Gavin will cover everything you need from using a long exposure with ambient light, mixing in flash, and finally the advantage of rear or 2nd curtain sync flash.
Even with the limited space of his small home studio, you’ll be surprised at just what’s possible when you mix flash, LED lights, and motion together.

Hiya Gav! Great video as always! Given me a great idea for a shoot (when it’s finally safe again here in Kent!). How would you do this mixing ambient light? Because obviously once I match exposures for my flash and ambient, if I start to slow shutter speed, my ambient will become brighter. I don’t use TTL so will it simply be a case of ND filters to stop it down?

Hmmm, good question Patty. I'm sure I could given enough time but if it's long exposures AND flash then usually my brain defaults to 2nd curtain sync.

How do we get sharp images at f2.8 when DOF is very shallow, especially when model is moving as in this video?
@anzaeria
@anzaeria 10 месяцев назад
Due to the ambient light and a need to blur the subject, a slow shutter speed would typically be used. And when we use a slow shutter speed, the aperture would be closed down a fair bit. So DOF should be adequate.
