Man that's the best explanation anyone ever gave about this optimized idol mode thing...I even try to read and understand the manual and it seems like they were going in circle now I understand that whole system alot better.
My mentor had a 2020 Cascadia and we could never figure it out, my company just gave me a 2022 Cascadia and watched this video and tried it out and the inside stayed nice and cool all night long.
I’ve had mine a full year now. What a crazy system as it will start and stop the engine 5-10 times during a 10 hour break in the summer. You can literally get cooler air with a fan in the passenger side window if you have one in the bunk. If its 90 at sundown you might as well push the yellow air break in and idle all night if you have good trailer breaks. Good luck your gonna need it.
Oh yeah you shouldn't have it start/stop when above 85. We set our trucks so if it is warmer than 85 it will just run continuously so it doesn't start and stop so much.
and tonight is one of those nights that is extremely humid and the opti idle wasn't working..... ha....i reset the dials like you showed, and boom...engine cranked up, air feels so good i have a channel where i help teach people like you do on yours thank you
Hate optimized idle (cuts off my radio when I'm watching a movie or listioning to a game or just listening to music as I relax, also turns on and shakes me awake at night great job freightliner ....it's not like my old truck when on idle the hum of the engine helped me sleep
I have it in my truck and love it. It's far better than an APU. When I had an APU, it was always breaking down so it ended up being more expensive than just idling the truck. I've heard other drivers say the same thing.
THANK YOU!!!! I was so fkn frustrated because i couldn't get it to work! I was using the front air control knobs instead of the bunk controls. Thank you so much!!!!
Very helpful thank you. I was wondering why interior comfort mode wasn’t working for me because I’m in Utah and it’s just hot and I couldn’t get the the optimized idle to run on it’s on. I got it fixed thanks to you for explaining how it really works.
Great video. One question, does the ignition key need to be in the on position for the optimized idle to work? Or just when you're setting the main control to on or off?
Best video I’ve seen, thank you you answered all of my questions and solved all the issues I was having 😂😂😂 this is my 8th video I watched btw before someone hit the main issue
Is there a way to control whether or not the blower runs when the engine is shut off? If Optimized Idle is in heat mode, you might not want to have the blower running when the engine is shut off, because you're creating a cool draft. If Optimized Idle is in A/C mode, you might want the fan to keep running even when the tractor isn't running, because circulating that air will keep you from getting too hot in the sleeper.
I was going to use the air brake lock and make something that plugs in to the 12v and it will push the override engine shut down button for me on a regular timer use
I appreciate your input! I got to say - what a confusing system. It would be so much easier if Freightliner had a Auto Climate control setting all together like most modern cars. Set the temperature in the cab to 68 degrees and continue to maintain temperature (heat or A/C) until the ignition is turned to the Off position. I read the “Interior Comfort” setting as a setting I want while I’m not driving down the road, but it’s not so simple. Weird design.
Thanks man,! Ive also realized there is a bunk button on the front of my dash. It keeps blinking whenever I push it. The other night, I guess it decided to work because it was like laying on a heated blanket. 🙃 Could you do a video on how to operate it effectively? Thanks for all you do.
Hey.... so loved the explanation. Thanks. But do you know how the built in refrigerator works. Like how to make it colder and if it will turn off when the truck is off? Please let me know. Thanks
So, I am assuming yours works like ours. The refrigerator has a temp adjustment in the fridge usually towards the top. And you can't make it shut off when you turn off the truck, the only way to turn it off is with the power kill switch to the whole truck. Sorry we missed responding to you 3 months ago!
I've found it works best when "on" btw...plz see @ when he mentions that elective. Thought I'd mention that. Hope that helps, Drivers. Safe travels and happiness be withyu!
My issue is, I turn it on, and set the temp. The truck turns off and 30 minutes later, I am sweating, and it never turns back on. So, I give up, just going to run the truck.
I am driving Cascadia in 2022. I would like to ask you, does Cascadia have an engine block heater plug function? Under my driver's door, there is a power socket. I don't know what it does? I want to know that it is winter now, and in the cold weather below freezing, what can we do before starting the engine?
Yes they do have block heaters if the truck was built with one. You can certainly plug into that plug below your door and it will start warming the engine.
Does comfort mode on turn the truck off n on To cause when i use bsttery mode the fruck dient turn on till 12.3 or maybe lower n my tv n everzthinh n inverter shuts off when the truck starts cause its starting too low voltage
So the key has to stay in the on position? Interior dash lights and radio stays on? I guess turn the radio off and cover the lights. Makes me nervous about the batteries. I know, the truck should start. Lol thanks for a good explanation.
Yes, so all of your normal functions with the Key on will continue to work the same way. But the batteries will be fine because the truck will monitor the battery power. So if your batteries get too low, the truck will start to charge them back up.
Those are in the parameters. So the best way is to use optimized idle, but your parameters could still be set to shut down optimized idle during certain temperatures. You driving a company truck or your own truck?
So I have Espar but no Opti idle, sitting in 40 degree weather with no way to keep the engine running or the heater on. No Opti idle option under vehicle settings menu. I have a 2019 Cascadia
Having optimized idle is very nice to have as well. If you don't have that but do have the bunk heater, usually with good batteries your espar can run for 8-10 hours before your batteries need to be charged up though.
@@DDTruckDriver when the truck is running, air comes out the bunker vents full force. Once the truck is off I only get air coming out the small circle vent on the floor.
@@TheLegendaryt2 Yes that is correct, all the vents are controlled by the truck except for the small one under your bunk. So once you turn off the truck you will only get air out of the small one under your bunk. And if your bunk heater is working properly that will be plenty to keep your warm all night long. It takes about 5-10 minutes to get going but it will put out hot air all night.
@@DDTruckDriver crazy, the only night I got it to work properly was in 50 degree weather. I was in sub 30s the past 3 days. But I got it all figured out now. It helps to run the heat full blast in the bunk while driving and to keep the curtains closed.
I swear if I've been having constant issues during this summer in my first truck as a new driver because I've been setting the temp too low on the cab thermostat, I'm going to blow my shit. Its 81 degrees on the Webasto s-bar heater with interior comfort/ standby mode on and the truck still hasn't turned back on after initially cooling down. 81 and I'm sweating like a pig in the sun without a mud bath. All my company said too do was not use opti idle and just idle the truck with the idle adjusted higher. But doing that nearly d-rated the truck because it wasn't regening.
Hi, my 2022 only has the first three options listed. There is no option for an optimized idle? Is there another way to get an optimized idle? Thanks for your response!
So your truck does have to be spec'd with optimized idle from the factory. It is not a standard automatic option. So if it doesn't show up then it is not spec'd for it. As far as I know if this is the case then you can't add it after however I cannot say that is for sure the case. After all, all it needs is a hood sensor and a software change and then it can do it. So you might ask freightliner if you can add it after the fact.
So it is a weird thing. No light - AC off Green light - eco AC Blue light - full AC. It is a weird feature. So when you turn on the AC you should be able to turn it to blue but after 45 minutes it will go green and the AC compressor won't run constantly, but will turn on and off so it doesn't run all the time. It was Freightliner's attempt to "save fuel." In moderate conditions it is fine. But in hot conditions you might feel like all the sudden your AC is doing a poor job and it is because it has gone into eco mode. You can click the button to turn it back to blue and then your compressor will run full time again. But unfortunately it will do this every 45 minutes and you have to switch it back each time.
@@rockusa6442 If green is keeping you cool then yes. But if you are feeling like it is getting hot then switch it back to blue. It won't hurt anything, it just makes the ac compressor run all the time which is what they normally do anyways.
It's 16 degrees tonight. I just set optimized idle to battery mode, no interior comfort, and I'm running the Espar heater. The truck turned on and has been idling for a while now... Is this thing ever gonna turn off?
Well...yes it should. Of course there can be sensors that go bad or other problems that can cause it to not work properly. However, when we have run into this where it runs in battery mode for a long time it usually means there is a bad battery(s) and last month a truck with a bad alternator was also doing that. But my suggestion would be to: 1. Look at your battery voltage on the dash both when it is running and when it is off. If when running it should be above 14, if not we have a battery or alternator issue. When it is off if it drops down below 12.3 then it will have to start back up and stay running because the voltage is too low which would mean bad batteries.
The temperature adjustment knob on my bunk controls says “PARK” with a light under it that illuminates if I click it. Any idea how that works? Can’t find any good info. Thanks.
@@Ward413 Gosh that sounds really familiar, I think that is a different system that just idles the truck constantly but I could be misspeaking there, I don't have experience with that version, sorry about that.
Best experience on this subject. Now why does my truck blow burning hot air in the summer wit a/c on? This only happens in the sleeper, the driver can be frozen solid. Brand new truck,, I mean come on why doesn’t it work?
Glad it helped! As for the reason on your other issue, it is hard to say without more information. But make sure you aren't cranking the AC all the way on full blast, that can freeze things up as well it can make the truck think there is something wrong if it feels like it isn't reaching the temperature you are asking for. If you are fully cranked on AC try backing it off a bit.
@@DDTruckDriver hey I found out a solution for my a/c only working in the sleeper! So I found out there is a valve that basically splits the system in 2 between the main cabin and sleeper. The valve is located above the fuel tank on driver side where the a/c hoses enter the sleeper. It gets stuck or malfunctions and all you need to do is tap it with a wrench or light hammer to open it up. Might need replacing but this has worked so far.
I have mine set to warm air but the air coming out of the vents is still cold how do I fix that? It was close to 50 degrees last night and I was freezing!
Depends on how you are running it. The truck will not maintain it exactly at your set temperature, it will do something like + or - 3 to 5 degrees. Meaning if you have your temp dial set right in the middle that is basically setting your temperature at 72 degrees. So the truck will try to maintain that, but once it shuts off it will let the temperature go to 69 or 76 degrees before it fires back up. This way your truck isn't working its guts out all the time to try and be perfect with temperature. The other scenario, let's say you have your temp dial turned way down in the blue so it is trying to maintain 60 degrees. If it is warm outside that is very hard for the truck to do and if it is trying and trying to cool down the truck but cannot do it, then after about 1 hour it gives up and it shuts down and doesn't start back up for a while or sometimes it won't start back up at all in case something is wrong and you have to start everything over again.
My comfort mode is hot asf in the front even tho I have it on cold and cold in the back but front so hot it's uncomfortable in the back how do I fix that
Absolute junk! It cools the truck then shuts off. But it gets way too hot before it kicks on and starts cooling again. Then it struggles to get the cab cool again. It needs to start up sooner before the cab gets too hot.
What year trucks have the optimized idle? They’ve been doing optimize idle for many years. But it’s not a standard feature, your company or you if you built your truck, would have to spec it with that from the factory. But it’s only like $100 to put on the truck so it’s the greatest hundred dollars you’ll spend.
Different problem. And that could be a few things, tough to say without being there. Do you have a espar? A lot of new trucks were built with the controller but didn't get the actual heater due to a huge back order
I don't know what that specifically is and how to address it. However, if the engine thinks it has a problem then the optimized idle won't run (as it has to run the engine) so most engine codes that need to be fixed at a shop won't allow opt idle to work
Your engine has and alarm that sounds to alert anyone around the truck that optimized idle is about to start the the truck. Sounds like you alarm is malfunctioning for some reason and the computer has disabled optimized idle until you get the alarm fixed.
It is likely your truck was not built with that feature then. Especially if you have an APU, people don't usually put on the APU if they have optimized idle.
So this is something that they have to spec on the truck when they build it. It is possible that on your truck they removed that option from the spec and it won't show up for you
Which is totally possibly, this has to be put on the truck at the factory. So the dash is the same, truck is the same, it is just a simple sensor they add to the hood and then they turn on optimized idle in the parameters and there it is. So if your truck was not built with optimized idle you wouldn't see it in your options.
Ok , got that part to at least work , Now , how do you just get this bucket of cusswords to just stay running ? 10 gal. of fuel is still cheaper than a motel ,
So you can adjust all the settings to allow it to run. However you have to have the program to plug in to the truck to adjust those parameters. And that program costs a few hundred dollars and it is not easy to use. The nice thing is it is very customizable though so you can really make it work however you would like it to
I hate this terrible system. Companies keep turning off option to manually idle because of these half assed nonsense systems, then I have to try to sleep while sweating my ass off in 110 degree weather, and that's while the shit even works. Thanks, you rotten bastards. A curse upon your line! Except the distant parts I may be related to. Those can remain uncursed.
Plugin as many devices as you can, sleep with your parking lights on. Drain your battery as fast as possible. Your truck will have to turn back on to charge the battery. I used to plug in my crockpot and pour a bottle of water in it to keep it from overheating. Keep a clear escape path and fire extinguisher near by just incase. Make sure crock pot is on level steady surface where you wont kick it or knock it over. If you have a tv, leave it on and drape a towel over it. Run a fan all night. Drain those batteries.
Piece of junk, mine cuts off states hood open, damn thing don't realize that I'm parked on a fucking hill . Seems like some engineer smart would have thought about that . Just shows how smart are smart people really are 😢
I’m sorry but optimized idle is junk. I had a truck like this for two weeks and the heat and air stopped working. Separate issue. I couldn’t idle the truck so absolutely no heat and no air. I will not drive a truck that I cannot idle.
Sounds like your real problem was parameter settings being incorrect. Optimized idle isn't a free pass to idle the truck how you want, it still has parameters and you can set those however you would like so you can idle 100% of the time or just with certain temperatures. I love opt idle in my truck. It manages the temperature for me so I don't have to wake up and make adjustments in the night. Plus it reduces my idle time by about 20% saving a lot of fuel.
@@skylerdroubay8209 optimized idle is fine if I can idle when I need too. My last truck was programmed to shut down after three min. No good. If I need to idle I do not want the truck to shut down. When I’m hooking up to a trailer and charge the air and get out to inspect everything I don’t want the truck to shut down. When I’m sitting in traffic or at a long stop light. I don’t want the truck to shut down or try to shut down. If the epu/apu goes out and I can’t get it repaired for several days I want to stay warm or cool. So optimized idle is junk. It’s that simple. When it’s 25 degrees out i want to start the truck and let it run for a while. Can’t do that unless you’re feathering the accelerator or brake pedal. Again no good. To each their own bro.
@@a-a-ron4679 Sure and we each have our own opinion. But what I am pointing out is you are talking about parameters, not idle or optimized idle. The truck can and will run whenever you need it to, but if your parameters don't allow it you need to adjust them. So my point in mentioning this is to point out that it isn't the idle system that is the problem, it is the parameters that are giving you problems. Hopefully that helps
@@skylerdroubay8209 it helps. Thanks. My point is. I want to be able to idle when I see fit. Not when the carrier or manufacture sees fit. Have a good one and stay safe out there.
I hate this next generation there POS they had too many computers related break down, it took month to get the parts the people that made these truck needs to be locked up in prison for 5 years.
