As a lifelong west Australian, hearing you call Freo a “secret” is absolutely hilarious. It may be the most visited place in the entire state. You guys be tripping 😂
"gaol" is pronounced "jail" - it's the "English" way of spelling. Also the Batavia (the ship) was on it's way from Holland TO Batavia (the city) - that's why it was carrying the gate/portico as ballast. And all the silver coins. It's shipwreck in 1629 and following mutiny and horrific bloodshed is the stuff of horror movies. West Australian schoolkids all know about the history of the Dutch East India Company (VoC) and its impact on the west coast long before the east coast of the country was visited by Europeans. Glad that you visited Fremantle.
@@AnywhereGoeshaha don’t worry it was cute that you pronounced it “gowl”. But in all honesty, you wouldn’t know that that’s how we spell jail so you get away with it.
Great video of my old stomping ground guys! Yep Freo is a great place with lots of cool history, architecture & good vibes! ..plus a rich Australian Rules Football history ⚓
The tunnel was used by the whaling ships. They would unload in the harbour (Bathers beach, there are remains of the old jetty there) and wheel the catch through the tunnel, up main street to the markets. Also Kalis fish and chips are much better 😊.
You didn’t notice the “decor” at Cicerello’s ( it’s decorated with surfboards kayaks, etc.) with shark bites taken out of them. Below them are the news articles regarding the shark “attack”. It’s easy to get distracted by the aquariums there though.
If you guys are still in and around Perth and want any tips feel free to reach out.....moved here from the UK 18 years ago. Happy to share any info i have learnt along the way 😊. Happy travels.
Hey! I’m a paramedic looking to move over this year from london, can I ask what suburbs in south Perth you would recommend for young couples? Fremantle & South Fremantle Beaconsfield White Gum Valley Hilton Melville Kardinya Hamilton Hill Coogee Bicton Victoria Park So far I’m torn between, Fremantle and Victoria park 😂
@ElectricVibez Really depends on a lot of things. Have you visited Perth before? Do you have work here and where? No where here in Perth is like London. Everywhere is a lot quieter. Fremantle or Freo is great and always something going on but can get quite touristy. It's also on the coast. Victoria Park or the locals call Vic Park isn't touristy more residential with lots of restaurants, bars and coffee shops. Vic Park is closer to the City of Perth. It's a big move, good luck.
@@ElectricVibez they're all close to Freo, except for Victoria Park...which is 5 mins from Perth City. It depends what life style you want & how much you're prepared to pay for rental or buying etc. I lived in Eastbourne for 3 yrs in the 90s. WA is a fantastic state & has Australia's best beaches 👍 Freo was a great place to grow up! ✌️
@@ElectricVibezNOT Vic park. Hami Hill and Hilton (next to each other) are considered lower socioeconomic area - still a lot of government homes, frequent police presence in some parts (although still quite expensive to buy due to proximity to Freo and the ocean). The blocks of land can be quite a bit larger there than the rest. Melville and Kardinya are very blah - urban, don’t have the same vibe as the older suburbs. Coogee is very modern, all new builds, not very green but beachside. If you are looking for the less modern and more beachy lifestyle stick South Fremantle budget permitting
you discovered the seaweed which sunk our America's Cup Defense , plus, to be honest we didn't expect to hold it agains Stars and Stripes because unfortunately the harbour and the winds and seas favoured a drag race and we were too slow , Now, Sydney harbour r might have been a different story but it was never meant to be.
As for our seagulls, they are to be ignored. Never encourage them by feeding them chips! They will immediately ring the dinner bell to all their mates and swarm your table by the hundreds. I personally regard them as rats with wings . . . but hey . . What’s the beach without seagulls ( winged rats )! Lol
In Western Australia, 99% chance the fish is Hake, which in the past, was sold as snapper. If you wanted snapper, you needed to order dhufish (pronounced jewfish). No idea when it closed, the Fremantle Fishermen's Co-Op was the best place in Western Australia for fish and Chips. Fish was always what you asked for, always fresh and the best value for money.
Get your facts straight, the bAtavia was dutch, not indonesian,,What was the tragedy of Batavia? On 4 June 1629, Batavia was wrecked on the Houtman Abrolhos, a chain of small islands off Western Australia. As the ship broke apart, approximately 300 of the Batavia's 341 passengers and crew made their way ashore, the rest drowning in their attempts.
