Join me as I eat all three meals of Menu #5 French 24 Hour MRE. We have Chocolate Cereal, Asian Salad, and Tortellini along with all the desserts and drinks that come with it. What an epicurean delight!
I don't know, James. They helped us out quite a bit back in 1778 - 1780. Made the difference for the beginning of our country. I doubt we could have won our independence without the French, my friend..... TFW!
Laughing in Napoleon....actually this statement is just a joke that got out of control. France surrendered in WW2 due to the total destruction in WW1. However before and after they were a world military power.
Actualy france as the most war won of any country in history the bigest war we lost was the Franco Prussian War and WW2 due to a lot of different factor
'Possible presence' on ingredients lists usually means that the food was handled in a place that also handles those ingredients. The EU requires that you include those on the ingredients lists, mostly for hyper allergic people.
When I heard “navy beans” I perked up. Back in the 60’s my dad worked for a company that paid him once a month. By the end (and I had no idea we weren’t affluent) of the pay cycle my Mom had to stretch a dollar. Navy beans cooked with a piece of salt pork was a staple. Served with homemade biscuits was a treat!
FYI, the Prunes in the can were semi dried. Which explains the blackish color. Not compromised. Check in a supermarket for dried prunes, and you'll see they usually look that way. Cheers!
The mint tea is a really nice addition... really good to aid digestion and upset stomachs. That should be something welcome on the field to combat a disagreeable MRE. That should be something included on a lot of MREs. Nice episode, French really do look after the troops.
From an European tea drinker. Boil your water, then put your tea bags in and let it rest just a little, please, don´t boil water with the tea bags in, it turns your tea bitter and non flavored, I also recommend removing the tea bag when you start to drink it. If you like your ice tea make a normal tea, let it rest, put it in the fridge and, ice tea. As for the coffee, same method, boil water and add your powder coffee, and if you don´t like sugar you can do it the Portuguese (South) way, with a stick of cinnamon on your cup, but do put a little sugar on your coffee, like I do, its better on your stomach, and always remember to drink some water after some strong coffee. And just a curiosity, in the EU almost all cans have that standard way to be open, it avoids a lot of accidents and is more practical. Those pates, they are great with some good rustic bread, but you can use some crackers, some people also like it with cheese.
French MREs are pretty darn good looking. Lots of goodies. That jelly nougat takes me back to the 60s at Grandmas house, definitely a vintage type of food but I've seen it still available. Nice that you can eat that main cold. And those fuel tabs were unusually long lasting. Great video. Thank you sir!
Salt in coffee helps retain water in low water situations. Like our Brothers in 1st Marines at Guadalcanal. Most Mint and chamomile teas are for night they help one sleep
Lol the fruit in the can were prunes, and they always look like that. I really like prunes but each to their own. Prunes are added to help things "move" through the body lol. The French rations are probably some of the best. They have so many unique mains, I've eaten that one you have, and really enjoyed it. Loved the story about the Arch de Triumph, I didnt know any of that so I found it really interesting, and props for the editing so we had pictures and film to go along with the story. Really loved your review, it was brilliant as always :)
Sorry but the fruit in the can were NOT prunes. Its dates. Prunille is the brand. 100% sure ! You can read it on the can, if you anderstand french. Good review btw. ;)
I love your viideos and both of you sons. Raised by a vet, police officer and a security Manager at my last job for 22 years., I love how you have instilled grace in your boys.
That white dessert bar with fruits is called nougat, I believe. It's pretty darn delicious. And my French may be rusty but I believe salté means saltine crackers. That food looked really good. It makes me want to make that oriental salad at home. Only thing I can't comment on are the prunes, since I've never had it. Overall that looks delicious (or maybe it's my weakness for sweet things). Thanks for the video.
salté means means dirty so be carfull with the spelling. French can already be pretty interresting even when spelled right so if you start misspelling it tehn you can really get things wrong
Wow what an interesting story about the arch that I've never heard before. I love how I can watch videos of you eating MREs, but I'll still have knowledge to take away!
Another great review! French along with Spanish have to be the best I’ve tasted, great quality and utterly delicious! There’s a reason btw why US rations are amongst the cheapest!!having said that it’s always what you prefer and everyone’s tastes are different!
Very interesting content. I feel like my dad might like this sort of thing! Definitely going to recommend your channel to him. :) keep on keeping on. Thanks for the content!
I have a feeling you were talking about Torrone, when you were saying it reminds you of something. It's made with honey sugar and nuts, also it is kind of chewy breakable.
Okay everyone has to realize that the French mre is put together from commercial supplies.. the us and a lot of countries produce enough mre that they are run specific batch meals.. There is a lot to recommend off the shelf manufacture of MRE.. your troops tend to start out familiar with the food from childhood
There was a story I recall from a Royal Marine buddy who served in Afghanistan that a popular thing that coalition forces would do when passing between checkpoints and bases would trade ration packs between them. He told me that it was common for him to trade out UK ORP's (Operational Ration Packs) with French RCIR Rations because while you'd get some "bad" rations that nobody wanted, the general rule was that you'd get a "close-to-gourmet" meal with any french ration even if it was a bad one. He did mentioned to me that US Servicemen would try it too but because their packs are more 1-2 meals than 24 hour rat packs, they'd need to give up 5 MRE's for 1 French Ration and they'd be extremely picky as to which MRE they'd want, normally they'll ask for the "best" MRE's and laugh if you try to give 'em mostly the bad ones, like Veggie Omelette
I love each time you before you eat you pray. Sticking with that Marine Corp God, Family & Country mantra. I could never serve yet if I could it would have been the Marines.
If ever Beautiful Bride sends me to the dog house, I hope & pray it will be stocked with French MREs. Excellent review that nearly had me drooling over the keyboard.
boiling water brings bitterness out of the coffee granules. use hot but not boiling.. in scotland people who dont like bitter coffee always put cold water or cream in the cup first...
I'm new to your channel. Really enjoying the MRE videos. Thanks for sharing. You had me belly laughing when you opened the prunes. By the way, they looked fine. I've read and seen in French films that the french serve "stewed prunes" as a dessert. A stewed prune will probably have a much different texture to a regular prune.
Hey guys! Great video. Looks like ya tried my suggestion of adding some salt to the bitter coffee. I agree with you, I was never a fan of it. My great uncle said that sugar was hard to get in Germany in WW2, at least for his squad, so, everyone started using salt, which was abundant. I guess it's an acquired taste, LOL! I don't know about that fruit. If it was supposed to be prunes, they looked pretty normal. But, they sure didn't look like the picture on the can. Looking forward to the next one, God bless guys.
the reason the stove an fuel tabs work so well, they're genuine Esbit not some cheap crap that smells of fish as far as I know while yhe contents of these packs is purchased by the military most of it is actually civilian stock
When you teed Ace up with "what does that look like", referring to the salmon pate, all that could come to my mind is "you know he thinks it looks like cat food" 😄. The French do look like they eat well in the field. Good video guys! Stay safe and enjoy the coming Fall.
4:18 "pâté" means what you just said but on the packaging here is written "pâte" which is used to say "dough" most of the time, you do not pronounce the E at the end contrary to "Pâté" ;)
@@gillianhutton9776 hey Gillian, mine actually came from a member of the French military, so I didn’t actually buy it. I’m sure there are sites out there but I wouldn’t be able to advise. Some of the channel members and commenters will almost certainly know though
Another tip for making instant coffee less bitter is to first dissolve the granules in a bit of COLD water. Then pour in the hot water. There's chemistry involved, but I forget the details. I just know that it works!
i come a bit late but here is some clue for french food, "paté" with the accent on the "e" is typical for meat or fish processed product that goes on bread usualy, if you see "pate" without the accent on the "e" mean paste, so a product in the shape of a paste more or less solid , it depend on the product, "pate de fruit" is litteraly "fruit paste" but for english speaker you should understand some kind of "gelly fruit bar".
I have a few French rations the one I reviewed had the boar 🐗 pate and seafood paella and and a sausage main everything was delicious I didn’t like the pate at first because the cognac flavor was really strong but after I let the rest sit in the fridge overnight it mellowed out the isotonic drink tasted like Flintstones vitamins to me. As usual another great review I enjoyed watching 👍🏾
Awesome review. I wonder what makes Oriental Salad Oriental? Or French for that matter? None of those ingredients particularly strike me as those from The Orient.
at a place i worked at i once vinegre cleaned the coffee pot then made a batch of coffee and for a big urn pot 3 pinches of salt to it, the girls were amased the coffee was so good and shock it was made by the one gal that didnt drink coffee
Another great video entertaining and intresting I ate my dinner while watching this, I agree about the prunes I hate them they taste vile but I'm weird and love prune juice lol
A friend told me that those powdered drink are freeze dried types. Crystals that rehydrate much better and the nutrients tend to be locked in with freeze dried mixes
Yes a new video! I sent you a couple of items that will hopefully last longer than food. Semper Fi. The Navy boys should have told you about a pinch of salt in the old coffee.
Hey ancient, wonderful channel! I was wondering if you've ever gotten sick from any MRE's, whether you were active, inactive, or during a review from your channel?
I found one that was a nugget bonbon jojobe on Amazon wonder if it's similar? I wanted to try it. Thanks for the excellent vids guys and your stories are incredible.
The reason why there were multiple "might contain" stuff in the back of the muesli is because of european labeling rules. If you process any ingredients that might cause allergies in the same facility, you must include them as "might include traces of..." items.
