Something a little different and unexpected on this day were these two French Air Force Pilatus PC-21 trainers. They made a series of great passes in the low fly structure of the North Wales Military Training Area LFA7

If one looks at compared characteristics (speed, climbing rate, range, powerplant, weight, wingspan), the WW II fighter the PC-21 is closest to is the Yak 9-U.

I live near the airforce base in Australia that’s home to our aerobatic team. The Roulettes fly the PC-21 and I never get sick of watching them train. Beautiful aircraft.

It's like watching a throwback to the great old piston-engine fighters. In fact, wouldn't it be awesome to see a P-51 or Spitfire do the Mach Loop or Star Wars Canyon in the US?

Pilatus builds a nice little hot rod trainer. Visions of the Valley of Speed!!,,Reno 2022!!. Can feel the compression on the right day as they pass by at 500+mph,,,about 75 yards away in our ultra secret spot. Rare Bear of old outbarked all of them and kicked up sand. Couldn't snap pics or video of good quality,,it happened too fast!. Love the Mach loop UK Aviation. Thanks.

The PC-21 with an uprated engine and more thrust from exhaust would easily get 500mph. But it is a different class...

The texan in reality is also a Pilatus project, the PC9 I believe, made under license in the USA. The PC 21 is the new one, much much better.

Very cool video, must say the PC-21 almost sounds automotive as it passes, like hearing a sports car on a mountain road but not being able to see it.

They are incredibly smooth and very agile - they pass over us frequently, but we see them less often than the Alphajets they have replaced, because they come and go so quietly and quickly. Looks like we might get to see them being thrown around a bit more, though, when they also take over the tactical training role.

Are you sure? Had you listen about another bird called Embraer A 29 Super Tucano? The Frenchs choose Pilatus because the RAF already had their own version licence built Shorts Tucano

@@r.guerreiro140 I'm sorry, what? Where is the logic in your statement? The Armée de l'Air procures the best aircraft for them. The Tucano isn't a bad plane, but it compares to the PC-21 as a Williams F-1 car does to the Red Bull Verstappen's car. Top league both... but relevant differences in the price-performance ratio.

@@r.guerreiro140 Yeah, the Tucano is a great plane, but it's been outclassed in every respect since the Texan 2, and the PC-21 punches above even that. I don't blame Tucano fan boys for loving that plane, but it can't be compared to more modern trainers.

I Worked on the Shorts Tucano For 8 Years,1100 Hp The Pc21 is a Lot Nicer To Look at Close up as the RAF Tucano Was A Modded Version of the 750hp Tucano and Fitting the Garret Tpe331 Caused a Massive amount of Mods Not as Nice to Look at as the Standard Aircraft Still it Did around 320 knots and Could Fly for around 3 Hours or so on 500kg of Fuel I Miss Seeing them Around & Working on Them☹️

Used to work in GA at an FBO at a large airport and I always thought the Pilatus was one of the coolest ga aircraft

Great stuff. Nice to finally see some foreign aircrafts allowed back in the loop again. I remember hearing on my scanner a BAF F16 being denied entry in 2018.

@@UKAviationMovies just started into turbines and was heading towards an f16 until I saw the pc21 version with a turbo prop! Btw…I am an rc club president with some British members here in Maryland. We do have gliders and a mixture of other planes. Spent all my UK time at RAF Greenham Common…84-88!

Neat. I hope those pesky Brits don't cause you too much trouble! I tend to fly slopes around the UK but I also am in a local club too. I went to a few airshows at Greenham Common as a kid during the 80s, great memories. Greenham was a pretty important base during that time eh?! I bet you have some very interesting stories from serving there.

When I was in french air force we where walking around the base smoking cigs and out of nowhere 5 pc-21 flew over us in Delta formation at low altitude and at full speed That was incredible!

Great vid thx, yea I saw these that day further down the valley from ground level, a lot faster and louder than a Texan, had to look on 360 radar to identify, they headed straight back to France after 2 loops

Great Pilatus... A few years ago I was able to see "the golden cartridge" with these Epsilon TB 30s landing on the tarmac of my flying club. Great time. I didn't have my cell phone to film them - now this French Air Force aerobatic patrol has been disbanded... Have you got some shots like this one with TB 30 ??? Thanks UK Aviation Movies ;-)

For PC 21 fans. Look also the Videos Axalp on RU-vid. Doesn't matter which year. Is a swiss air force meeting. Lot of PC 21 and other stuff. They fly between the swiss alps. Near flyby maneuvers and Great recordings. i promise 😎

I'm Proud to say I wash the dishes after lunch from the boys and girls that build these planes, messy buggers but they don't half put out a good product! Interesting question. I just checked that out and found that the maximum speed of the PC-21 is 370kts. Fast jets are doing normally doing around 500kts through this part of the mach loop so the PC-21 is not much slower, especially for a prop!

I imagine a P51 Mustang looked & sounded much the same back in WW2, only the long double canopy really gives it away. I'd guess the performance of the two aircraft types was pretty similar.

Fast, but amazing to think the Mosquito was just as fast, the P51, Tempest were slightly faster, while the Seafury was a quite a bit faster...

Yes, indeed Peter, & not quite so "user friendly" I think we could include the dh Hornet on your list too. I'm always fascinated by folk associating the prop howl with the i/c engine, that's not a criticism. At 50+ years of flying & servicing aircraft, I should be able to tell. A really nice bit of film work, & a fine aicraft, & engine combination. Thanks to all concerned, & to the enthusiasm of the viewers.

Interesting to view the early shots with what appears to be a lack of rudder with the turns, dragging the tail a bit. Quite common.

@@vascoribeiro69 According to some websites I visit, including air force web sites, and "Wikipedia"... the max speed indicated is 370kts... No matter if I'm wrong. Whatever, it's a very powerfull aircraft, and, even if we are a lot af Alphajet fans to be sad for the choice of the PC-21, we must admit the relevance of that choice.

@@andremetayer1467 indicated airspeed equals true airspeed at sea level and decrease with altitude increase. VNE is max speed to safely fly an aeroplane, and also decreases with altitude. Max Mach number is constant and is 0.72 for the PC-21. That speed is true airspeed in level flight.

They're really have a mustang sounding kinda thing rolling and the turbine giving it a third stage sound!! I kid you not!! It's quite a treat having the airspace directly over the property being used for training fighter pilots. And its hard to believe how much ordinance one can haul..

When did you record this? We were on holiday in Bala 2 weeks ago and heard this guy go over a few times, only saw him once and wondered what it was, Typhoons went over most days, so I assume that Bala is 'on the way home' from the Mach Loop

I worked at Hawker Beechcraft where they make the T-6 trainer. Which is an Italian designed Pilatus aircraft. The wings of the PC-21 are basically the same as the T-6. I have never heard of a PC-21 Doing 767MPH or Mach 1. But there you have it. Impressive.

You have no clue what you are talking about and never worked for Hawker except maybe as a toilet cleaner. The T-6 is based on the SWISS PC-9 and the wing of the T-6 and PC-21 have nothing in common. The PC-21 has a swept wing with roll spoilers while the T-6 only has a straight wing with ailerons. OMG 🙈🫣
