📜Firing and history of the RSC 1917 Automatic rifle:
It is with tremendous joy that I present to you the RSC 17. It is a real chance to share with you some shooting images of this mythical French weapon of the first world war.
With the arrival of smokeless gunpowder in 1884, the automation of the weapon systems could finally be accomplished. Thus, France will carry out its own research as early as 1894, to adopt an "automatic" rifle. At that time, the term semi-automatic did not exist, and its rifles were well designated as "automatic rifles". Many prototypes will be made, because the engineers will test different systems (gas return on the breech, long or short recoil of the barrel, etc...) and test different ammunition, because the basic problem is that the regulation cartridge adopted with the Lebel Mle 1886 rifle is not suitable for automatic weapons, at least with difficulty.
It is then that in 1913, France decides to adopt the Meunier A6 automatic rifle. And yes, before all the great European powers. But the entry into the war in 1914 stops the project, because it is necessary to concentrate the economy on the war and the production of weapons already in service. Especially since the A6 Meunier has a very specific cartridge, and the logistic constraints do not allow to have 2 infantry weapons with 2 different ammunitions.
In 1915, the project to adopt an automatic rifle is relaunched. But this time this new weapon will have to chamber the 8mm Lebel. It is there that Ribeyrolles, Sutter and Chauchat will propose a "conversion" of the Lebel rifle, in automatic rifle, which will give rise to the RSC 17.
But this RSC is not yet fully developed! And in the meantime, the production of the Meunier A6 will be launched, as the first real semi-automatic rifle in the French army!
When the RSC17 is finally ready, around 1917, the Meunier A6 will be put back in the arsenal.
86000 copies of the RSC17 were produced, which makes France the first world power to have adopted a FSA in large quantities.
The RSC18, shortened and improved version of the RSC17, will arrive too late, in November 1918. It was only produced at 4000 copies.
