My father, Ferenc Racz, was in the French Foreign Legion from 1945, serving in Oran as well as in 'Indo-China'.
Many of his comrades died, and he was shot several times, and knifed, plus retained grenade fragments in various parts of his body from a few close blasts. He was a Legionnaire till he died. I have borrowed some photos from Facebook pages, with thanks. Songs have been credited in the menu.

My Grandfather was in the 2nd REP and he participated in the wars of Algeria and Indochina.

Hi, I was planning to join up, but began training as a nurse - then got married and that was the end.

Dear Jasper Wingsuit. Only just found your comment, one year late! My father was Hungarian born, but 'recruited' into the German war machine when he was caught in a Hungarian uniform. He was in the 'Black Fist' Panzer division, and captured in France in 1944. Joined the French Foreign Legion in 1945 where he served in Oran, Sidi-Bel-Abbes, and in the "Extreme-Orient" till 1950. He returned to Austria (could not return to Hungary because of Russia) so his parents could come out to visit him. He married my mother in 1950, and we all moved to Australia in 1960

Dear Luca, thank you for the compliments. My father killed many in the war, because it was war. He, and millions of other soldiers who were in this 'world' war, thought their own homes had already been destroyed and that their own loved ones had also already been killed.

Dear Tubewearwolf, My father was born in Hungary, joined the Hungarian army at age 16, then was 'taken' into the German army (all I know is he was in a panzer division in France, where he was captured). He spent one year in a P.O.W. cam,p, then joined the French Foreign Legion (1945-1950) fighting in Algeria and 'Indo-Chine' . He was shot many times, stabbed a few times, and even at age 60, was NOT a man anyone should pick in a fight, without regretting the mistake!

Apám azt mondta: "soha nem akarsz háborúban lenni. Ha háborúban vagy, harcolj az ellenséggel, ahogy ők harcolnak veled. Különben meghalsz". Azt mondta, az arabok és az ázsiaiak elleni harc volt a legnehezebb. Feláldozzák asszonyaikat és gyermekeiket, hogy megöljenek téged. Sok kolléga életét vesztette, hogy megmentsenek egy súlyosan megsérült nőt vagy gyermeket. Az ellenség megcsonkította a sajátjukat. Ez a háború.

@@BernhardRacz Mocskos dolog a háború. Sajnos a mostani helyzet sem kecsegtet túl sok jó kilátással.

@@andraas001 Egyetértek, de szerintem a NATO és az USA, az EU is Putyint szorgalmazza a háborúban. Nem hiszem, hogy hagyják, hogy PUTIN megállítson egy háborút. Túl sok pénzt keresni. El kell fogadniuk Oroszországot. Aztán Kína felett vannak.

If you are referring to the soldiers (who mostly are not soldiers and have no idea about a gun) joining 'legions for Russia or the Ukraine, they are NOT "legionnaires". My father was shot about six or seven times, stabbed, stabbed also with bayonet, and had shrapnel in various parts of his body, from fighting in WWII fromage of about 17 till 23, then 5 years in North Africa and Cambodia regions with the French Foreign Legion. He ran from nothing, and never lost a fight till he died at age 69.

@@BernhardRacz No. I was talking about the friendy rivalry between moden day soldiers from the french, german and British armies. Allies now on Nato and UN operations but also have been enemies at certain points in history.

@@phililpb - that makes sense. My father fought for the Germans at one stage, also for the Americans from documents he had, and said he met friends who were later on opposite sides.
