"La petite amie" means "the girlfriend" as opposed to "the small friend (f.)" "Le petit-fils" means "the grandson" Not everything is a literal translation. You have to consider the context (and the hyphen). You also need to get rid of the "e" at the end of "petit" if you are going to use it to describe a male, which you were. "Petite" would be used to describe a female (ex. "the granddaughter"="la petite-fille")
