French People Try to Pronounce Difficult English Words

I make French people pronounce difficult English words! It's simple, the rule is they have to be 100% French to participate. Then, I show them a series of hard English words and they have to attempt to say them out-loud. Thats it!

Someone: shows a French man a word with too much 'R' Frenchman: *breaks*
@michaelweiske702
@michaelweiske702 4 года назад
Tbf, the English R is quite different from what other languages use as R. Most languages form R using the tongue similar to L, while English uses the lips similar to a W. This is why languages with no R at all tend to default to L (see "Engrish") and why Elmer Fudd uses W instead of L (see "Waskiwwy Wabbit")

@michaelweiske702
@michaelweiske702 4 года назад
@@SherriLyle80s yes, he does, and that speech impediment makes it difficult to pronounce R's properly, though he still mimics the motions with his mouth, hence the W sound. Thank you for providing this very useful information.

Same with Americans. They pronounce Mirror as "meer" and "terrorist" and "tourist". Americans struggle with R's more than French.
@michaelweiske702
@michaelweiske702 4 года назад
@@wollybumbol214 I, as an american, must disagree with you. I can see the mirror-meer connection, but we do not pronounce terrorist as tourist. We know terror has two syllables, and no one pronounces tour as tear (as in a page).

As a native English speaker who has studied French, I think “choir” looks like a French word, and I can’t blame them for pronouncing it the way they did. I’m surprised they didn’t all comment on how the spellings of English words often seem to have no relation to their pronunciation. By the way, the last word is spelled wrong, at least on the screen. There is only one “h” in the word “psychotomimetic.”

I have so much respect for the French people. As an American visiting overseas, I did my very best to learn, speak, and respect their beautiful language, but they would go above and beyond if I struggled (and genuinely politely, with no snarky backhandedness) usually help out by speaking with me in English afterwards, while still encouraging me in a positive way to continue learning French. I have nothing but nice things to say about the people I met there.🙂

You can say the same about most people who learn a second language. You learn basic phrases right out of a textbook vs learning the language from speaking it colloquially. When you hear something frequently enough you say it like that, and second language speakers often aren’t exposed to the nuances of how a language is spoken everyday.
