Could you please make a video on when to use c'est and when to use il est. This always confuses me. Merci
@cst256
@cst256 7 лет назад
Use "c'est": 1. "c'est" + noun Example: C'est un chien (It is a dog). 2. "c'est" + proper noun Example: C'est Pierre/C'est Geraldine. 3. "c'est" + pronoun Example: C'est moi/C'est lui/C'est toi. 4. "c'est" + dates La fête? C'est le quinze juin! C'est demain! Use "il est": 1. "il est" + adjective Example: Il est beau/ La fille? Elle est belle/ La music? Elle est etonnant! 2. "il est" + occupation/nationality/religion (as adjective) Example: Il est medicin/ Elle est francaise/ Il est chrétien.

and now some tricky uses of "Il est", undefined : il est 4 heures : it's 4 o'clock.... quite the same as : C'est 4 heures...
@kendahkem5279
@kendahkem5279 7 лет назад
isn't there something where you can only use "c'est" the first time you refer to the proper noun and after that, you have to use "il est"? Ex: "C'est Pierre. Il est grand"

The last translation of "depuis" resembles "since... ago". J'apprends le français depuis un an. On peut dire en anglais, I've learned French since a year ago.
@kendahkem5279
@kendahkem5279 7 лет назад
No, we'd say "I've been learning French for a year now". That sentence above, while structurally correct, isn't how native English speakers speak.
@ReganShorter
@ReganShorter 7 лет назад
I'm a native English speaker. You could use the present perfect simple or the present perfect continuous in this situation. My comment was more so in reference to the "since... ago" construction in English :)
@karencass3226

not sure i would ever say 'I've learned French since a year ago'. more like 'I've been learning French for a year'.
@ReganShorter
@ReganShorter 7 лет назад
karen Cass once again, a preference for present perfect simple or continuous and different choice of for/since. Just a simple way to remember how to use "depuis" for "since... ago". You can always translate a variety of ways :)

Hello! It's still bumfuzzling and tricky. Almost all French teachers explain the meaning of "depuis" when it's analogous to "for" by giving examples with the French present tense. I've never seen an explanation with the French passé composé. In his presidential speech Macron said "Ce que avons fait DEPUIS tant et tant de mois n''a ni précédent ni équivalent". Is it even correct?

The first two sentences begin with the self pronoun followed by a verb. Why do they appear so differently in french "il me faut" and "je devrais". I'm entirely unsure as to why this is. Could someone please help me?

""Il y a une station de métro" = there's a subway station. "Il y a dix ans que je la connais" = I've known her for ten years. "Je l'ai rencontrée il y a dix ans" = I met her ten years ago.

Salut, tres bonne video! J'apprends le francais depuis 9 ans! Une seule ambiguite que je trouve souvent est par exemple pourquoi on Musee du Louvre et pas de Louvre, ou La Republique de Congo et pas du Congo? Merci.
@kazuya49
@kazuya49 6 лет назад
Salut, "Du" est la contraction de "de le". Comme on dit "le Louvre", alors on doit dire "du Louvre" et non -"de le Louvre"- . Ceci n'est valable qu'au masculin car "de la" (au féminin) reste le même.
@kazuya49

Du Congo est correct ;)

J'apprends le français depuis 2009 maintenant. J'ai mal à comprendre l'utilisation de "falloir " en comparaison avec "devoir".
@lensdurandisse6980
@lensdurandisse6980 7 лет назад
In my perspective, "falloir" is often used for external due or obligations while "devoir" is more used for something you impose on yourself but I can be wrong
@AndersonWheaton
@AndersonWheaton 4 года назад
A big difference is that 'falloir' can only have one subject, which is 'il'. It's like 'pleuvoir' that way, or 's'agir'. So the person who must do something is never the subject of 'falloir', but always the subject of 'devoir'.

When I watch my French cowgirls, they often open their viedos with saying something that sounds like; undre die,,... which I take as something lkike" on this day,,we are going to,,,,,,," Because die sounds like dia, which is day in Spanish. I know that day is jour, but still, it thows me off, Anne is always so enthuestic by the contex and vislual clues, I get what's going on.

You always seem to use the TU form when addressing your viewers - as in finishing with "Et toi?". I thought this was reserved for close friends and children not just just the singular person. Have you dealt with when to use tu and vous when speaking inFrance?
