Dang I’m mad I missed you coming to my State Dave. I would have happily braved a torrential rain just to shake your hand and thank you for changing my life. Self reliance is really the top skill you graciously offer us, which I’m sure you know. Wish I could help with the video uploads. I’d happily edit and upload pro bono for you as a small token for what you have given me over the years. Probably not something you’d be interested in with web security and reputations being ruined nowadays.

I've used a French press for years in my home. It never occurred to me to take it camping or use it in my medicinal applications. Brilliant. I'll buy one from you Dave just to have in my kit and leave my normal one at the house.

Dave After watching your RU-vid video on French press ideas I thought I would sit down and offer some thoughts. I don’t usually comment, though I am a huge fan...of your mentality, thought process, and gear. You have well thought out, tough, durable, usable, and fairly priced gear. I am in the process of converting all my friends, family, and Scouts over to your gear. Being an avid hunter, backpacker, wilderness kayak camper, and Scout leader/ Eagle Scout, I am always looking to learn and improve my time in the woods. I was intrigued that you are using the exact same set up for chameleon hammock and hammock gear underquilt. For weight and ease of using the doors in winter and bad weather, I have converted to warbonnet superfly and love it! On to the real reason for the comment. Ironically I had just sat down to enjoy a fresh cup of French press coffee when I watched your video, laughing at my good fortune. I have been searching high and low for a set up that you teased. Here are my thoughts. I would like to see the press made from the larger 48 ounce cup with the pour spout mod you mentioned. The 26 ounce cup nested inside. The plunger has always been the issue for me. Here is where I think you have the opportunity to capitalize on the missing piece of the puzzle. If you could produce a plunger where the screens could be removed from the rod, then they can be separated for storage. My current French press set up does not allow for storing another cup and coffee or other sundries inside. It is virtually wasted space. But if one could remove the rod, here is how I would set up my nesting set, using a bottle bag to capture it all. Coffee press screens on the bottom, 26 ounce cup lid, 64 ounce modified cup, 26 ounce cup nested inside, coarse coffee inside that, anything else food related I could cram in, followed by the lid for the 64 ounce cup. Down the side of the bag nestled beside it all could go the rod. I would envision a threaded rod with matching threads in the center of the screens for ease of removal. Love the option of using this set up for self contained pot and cup, coffee. I could think of several options for this.

I look forward to when we can get one. My pathfinder bottle cook set is one of my favorite parts of my gear and I'm sure this coffee press will be just as high quality. Thanks Dave for putting out stuff to make smoothing it that much easier.

I use a french press exclusively for coffee at home, but being glass would not travel too well camping so one that can be used in the wild interests me. On a different topic. Videos on various ways to secure yourself from predators while you sleep, I think would be very interesting and helpful.

A good video. In my younger days, I picked a Coleman Peak 1 compact stove for multi-day trips. It always gave good service and did not require priming paste or fuel to get it started. It did require pumping up the pressure from time to time since it was not self-pressurizing. Cold feet ARE part of aging. Even sleeping flat on a wood floor in a lean to, my feet get cold first at some point in the night.

Looks like a great idea Dave , maybe you could have it so you take it apart. A metal rod threaded at both ends, a threaded knob and screen end. It would make it more compact and the lid could be used by itself, with a folding bail and the small hole.

Great video. There are soup-stock opportunities as well or even a colander for washing greens. I love the add-on design, saves overall weight and less fragile if you are already bringing in the stainless cup/pot. One tip with the coffee: a touch of salt can neutralize the bitter, and you are probably already carrying salt. Any thoughts on skirted pots?

Obviously I don't know where the final rendition of your press is going and perhaps you've already thought about this but I think making the handle multiple pieces will be a great improvement. The screen and knob detaches from the rod. Ensuring the rod will fit inside the cup (pot?) when closed.

Have you concidered making the push rod of the press detachable from the filter so that it unscrews from the top of the filter and breaks down into two pieces (like a gun cleaning rod). This way the pieces can be stored inside the pot along with your bag of coffee. Otherwise a standard french press handle running down the middle of the pot is going make it difficult to cram anything else in there.

Assuming you were at John's, that place can be tough to get out of when soaked and muddy. Not too much interested in the press (prefer less gear and cowboy coffee) but if you change the big cup to more of a Mors design, I'm in for sure.
@AxbeardXIII
@AxbeardXIII 5 лет назад
Will the press rod/handle be able to unscrew for storage? If you could store that rod somewhere besides in the center of the cup, it would open up that space for more accessible storage. The filter portion would nest with the lid.

The French press addition is a real cool idea, but my vote would be skip the spout, either one slit, or the holes in the top like you have, make the press part removable and keep the standard handle on the top as well. You couple keep all the functionalities of the standard pot and lid, and only need to carry the plunger and filter to turn it into the press... Which you could boil the water in, and add the grounds to it. Just my 2 cents.

In a french press you don't want tge water boiling. You want about 190°F. This will keep the oils intact and give you the best flavor and most caffeine. Next time you brew, boil the water to rapid boiling, then let the kettle sit for 5 minutes without heat.

Thanks for the video. French presses are great, and great when camping. If you are going to use for herbal too you really need a hot soapy wash to get the coffee oils out. I do think a spout is a good idea as that is a couple of cups if sharing, but consider holes in the lid so you can use the pot as a mug with the press down. Good addition to your product line.

"Frontier Internet Service", I must say, sounds highly anachronistic. You have me picturing the servicemen arriving by mule train or buckboard. 😂 I look very much forward to the arrival of the Pathfinder French Press (PFP?). The steeping time is a very important part of making good coffee, and only the French press effectively and efficiently solves the problem of separating the brew from the grounds afterward. The method you showed for brewing the coffee seems to take into account that the ideal water temperature is 200°F (± 5°).

Dave, in addition to the full FP set, consider selling a version of the PF Bottle Kit with the FP filter and the mods to the cup (hole in the lid for the filter rod, spout hole on the side of the cup) for those of us who don’t want to carry an extra pot on a scout or dayhike. I’d much rather just have what you showed today as part of an existing stainless bottle cook set.
