We are going to start off by understanding the basic principles of Frequency Separation and why to use it as a technique and what advantages it has. Firstly, we'll learn what is Frequency and how is it related to images. Then, we'll move on to learn how to separate different frequencies in an image to target the skin texture and the color separately. After that, we will really go in-depth into what is mixer brush and how to use it in this technique. Also, I'm going to share my favorite tips and tricks to get the softening done faster, finer, and easier. Hope this video helps you!

@@michaelcus734 well did you just watch phlearn free RU-vid videos or the pro subscription? The phlearn pro videos are awesome and he doesn't explain as well in the Freeones but yes this guy is amazing and just as good as paid but free which is nuts. I've literally never seen a RU-vid tutorial channel for anything that doesn't leave out the most important info until now Edit: ok I didn't actually watch the video yet before commenting holy shit. Yeah this guy's a god lol perfect explanations. I was wondering what order to blemish, liquify, frequency separation etc and sorta had it figured out but this makes so much sense. You don't need to know this stuff exactly to do it but I always love to know the why and makes it much easier to remember Also just saw he has a patreon I think I'm gonna donate so he stays "free" if he ever makes a structured paid course he's gonna be riiiiiich

Very good explanation. Also, slight correction. When talking about frequency, many people might assume you're talking about the frequency of electromagnetic waves that directly get propagated into the human cornea, that eventually form an image. However, that's not the case, you're actually dealing with pixel frequency, as it's colloquially said, which is a composite of waves, that add together to form a certain wave, by addition (mostly), which are added on top of a surface, basically as a colour map. This results in what we call texture, which is a mostly (usually) repetitive pattern which has constant and very fast contrast changes, resulting in fast changes in frequency. The example you show with oscillations doesn't translate what happens with the electromagnetic waves per se, it's actually a measure of the changes in frequency, caused by the fast contrast changes that happens when dealing with textures. It's also very important to note that different textures might have different Fourier transforms, depending on the kind of texture (regular, irregular, etc.), which means that frequency separation might have to be done in different ways depending on the kind of texture. However, skin texture is almost always mostly regular. This is just a technical correction, and of course there are many other things happening on how images are rendered and how these textures get created into a digital image, but that has no real value to this topic. Other than that, perfect :)

Yeah, the introduction also made me cringe. I mean, as a software tutorial it's on point, but at best very misleading in explaining the principles behind the algorithm, which is ironic seeing how many comments praise the video for finally explaining frequency separation principle.

There is a non destructive way to do this with the mixer brush. You could just turn off visivility of the high key layer (details), create a new layer in the middle of low key and high key layers, check "sample all layers" in the mixer brush options and start painting in the new layer, that way you sample the color layer but the painting is made on that separate layer, so you can erase or low the opacity if the efect is too hard.
@hawaffenna

But how do I erase, when using a wet brush? Sorry for my ignorance 😞🙈
@EzequielPH
@EzequielPH Год назад
@@hawaffenna If you paint with the wet brush on a new layer with the "sample all layers" checked, you just use the eraser tool. This works ONLY if you use the mixer brush on a new layer on top of the photography layer
