That's why it's important to keep river pollution down. It will never be gone because of the commerce but we sure can keep riverside industries from dumping their trash in. I grew up on the Ohio river in the 60's and early 70's. Not much could survive in it. Mostly just cat fish and carp. Now it's thriving with bass, crappie and many other more fragile species. you can eat the fish but there are suggested limitations on fish meals depending on the type of fish depending on what the species primarily eats and whether they are a bottom dweller or not. Mercury and pcb's are in every river in this country now and most of the lakes. It's a shame.
@@monmixer We have a local lake like that, its adjacent to a military base. Not recommended to eat any bottom species like drum or catfish. Most of the rivers and other areas recommend limitations, so you can eat some of the fish.
Caught a lot of drum fishing for cats. Would keep them over 10lb, they have a red layer under the skin you need to get rid of. Good eating fish and a bonus of "pearls" in the head you can cut out which are kinda cool.
Yeah the lucky stones are a cool bonus! You don't need to cut anything to get them, don't dull your knife, just lay one on the ground after filleting and give him a few good foot stomps to the head and you can pick the stones out, real easy!
We did a side by side riverfront fish fry with channel catfish and drum. Everyone agreed that the drum was the hands down winner! People throw them out because they have large scales. Don’t! They are delicious 😋.
GASPER GOO ?!!! I haven't heard those words since 1976 when Larry in Austin Texas said it was the name of a super sized bass hiding in Williamson creek and no one had yet been able to catch him. Stupid Larry.
oh i've had someone steal a fish from us. we just hooked spoonbill and some guy saw what it was and kept trying to snatch my net from me so he net it. Once we reeled it in, dude picked up the fish and walked away with it
My grandpa had a railroad buddy who lived on the Mississippi in Minnesota who swore by sheephead sandwiches. One day he brought one to work for my grandpa. Firm, white meat. He said it was good. Never had it myself, because of the bad reputation (mostly from other people who never tried it?), but this year I’m going to give it a try. Nice video.
Sounds like a decent walleye! Congratulations buddy! I went to my local dam today in New Brighton, Pennsylvania and caught a 12.2 lb 29" wiper bass on a bluegill swimbait on my first cast. It's the only wiper I've ever caught. Thanks for sharing your story with us!
I catch them sometimes when fishing for other species. Tons of fun to catch - they really put up a good fight. Kept one recently to give it a try and it tasted great! Definitely firmer meat than other game fish like Walleye. Closer to the texture of chicken!
I throw them back or give them to the Hmongs(not sure if they are Vietnamese, Laotian or Cambodian) when they are fishing close by. Also give them carp and Dogfish. They are just ugly and I have a hard time eating them.
Kabob L-Brewster The meat is firm and tasty thats why us asians love them. My family has actually prefered hooking drum over catfish due to how muddy catfish taste
You absolutely blowed my mind catching that catfish the other day on a lure.Im like you, I fish with lures and live bait and never have seen a catfish caught with a lure.Your the man Hood!!!
Nice catch, M. Hood! My dad and I caught a few up here on Lake Audubon, North Dakota. They tend to school with walleye in these waters, so most walleye snobs throw them back.
Tbh most fish are good to eat people just like to complain about bones and small stuff so they call them trash fish. Carp arent bad to eat either cook anything the right way and it can be great.
@@raymondsimpson7433 black drum live in brackish and fresh water saltwater tends to clean fish a little better freshwater drum are usually more susceptible to getting worms in the meat not always but on the bigger fish it's a pretty good chance
They have them striper bass up here on the Mississippi and Clinton Iowa I haven't caught one in a while but I have ran into a mess of them a time or two about a year ago and I'll tell you them are good eating for sure
@@NMranchhand The Chinese do this with the head on. Most Americans can't take this but I did with no issue. I've eaten the cheek meat too. Very clean meat, white with the texture of lobster. My first comment was, where's the butter, this tastes like lobster! Of course, make sure you gut it.
@@nickpezzello3066 yes indeed, better meat, and less chance of contamination from chemicals. Just look at the alerts Fish and Wildlife put out and I was surprized most about catfish warnings along the Mississippi River. www.wwno.org/post/it-safe-eat-fish-mississippi-river
just found out about your channel and i just subscribed!!! Hopefully i can get some merch someday to help support you!!! You are the type of guy i would love to go fishing with!!!
Pretty cool video, I catch them in Texoma and other lakes but have been letting them go although redfish are great eating. Will try your recipe on the next fish I catch. I use the liquid zatarains though...
I'm commenting from Sydney. Long way away. Got a question - I watch plenty of fishing vids from the USA and whenever you guys catch a freshwater Drum it seems like it's a dissapointment. Why? They grow to a decent size and hit plastics, so why are they considered a "rubbish fish" by so many? Thanks for the videos man.
It’s just that people prepare their bait and poles to go out and aim for catfish, or even bass and then end up catching drums. They’re a pretty abundant fish in some waters and I think they prey on the other game fish which annoys people.
Oh that’s funny. Yes we do call them that. We catch them off our dock on the St. Clair River just above Marine City. They’re doing alright since they learned to eat that invasive Russian Goby. I’ve got to try some in a seafood linguine.
doubleheadergr Oh, good memories! I may have even liked them more than perch when I was a kid. Of course, they were deep fried and covered in butter. Perhaps I loved the butter.
My mom raised me to believe that gasper goo were trash fish. I was fishing for white bass yesterday on the Neches river in Chandler Tx. A lady caught a few gasper goos and I asked her why she was keeping them. She told me they have have a sweet meat similar to white bass or crappie. Is that true? I'm curious to find for myself.
Yes we eat them regularly here in TX I fish nueces River I've caught one around 30-40 pounds I released it,but I kept 6 they were great and easy to clean very white meat similar to the red drum or young black drums
I got a question is this part of the Mississippi River brackish because I've heard stories that they do catch red drum and black drum in the Mississippi River
Further south on the Mississippi River you'll catch red drum in black drum. In Natchez Mississippi the only species of fish that occurs in both freshwater and brackish water is mullet. The only other saltwater species that swims that far up the river is bull shark. Bull shark are not commonly caught this far up River, it's rare.
The drum what cought my eye and pore man's lobster. Lol. But bet that is good. Can you do with other fish or just white fish or drum. Also do you take the rocks from there heads or stones people call it different in diffrent places I've traveled. Looks like the Mississippi River. I live in Louisiana I've been there once very bad day. My boat sunk while it was up on shore never have I had a boat sink that fast it wasn't tied in the back just front but wave come in and yea crazy. I got the water out then drove it to get the rest out with the plug out. Broght it in loaded on the trailer. Then cops showed up took my friends baby big mess that was. Well they ended in jail after Omg all day finally I had to get back home with my daughter. Never went back but 1 time to get them out jail and court once but never back to the river. Still love to fish out there but not with my boat. Lol. But good video thumbs up for shur. God bless
I tried this a couple of years ago, the fish had a rubber texture that was not good. Be interested to hear if anyone else tried this and it turned out good. I caught a 5 gallon bucket of drum each time I'm been out White Bass fishing this year.
Mark, I have a question. If you caught let's say a really big largemouth or one of those king size cats that are in that river, would you have them mounted or would you let the fish go?I was just wondering if you ever had any big ones mounted like that big red fish you caught that's in your thumbnail?
