Thank you for all these lectures. The ones about Kant's Critique were great! I'm listening to them for the second time. And I'm excited for these lectures about Freud and looking forward to your lectures about Marx. I really appreciate it :)
Dear Professor Wolff, you and people like you such as Chomsky live forever. I’m watching your videos (Kant, game theory, Marx, and now Freud, here in Hong Kong in the summer of 2021. Trump is gone, and I, not exactly a leftist, am telling everybody I can get hold of to watch your videos. I do not see eye to eye with everything you say, but there’s not the slightest doubt in my mind that you are a great lecturer, an excellent speaker, a wonderful human being, and a superb story teller. The world is a better place because of you.
i'm as taken by the elegant simplicity of the structure of this introduction as i am by your personal anecdotes and way of being. thank you, dr. wolff! i hope you keep putting more lectures out there, this series is very useful
I have had in no way, any interest in this sort of knowledge or any history in it for that matter, but this was insanely fascinating to watch and I enjoy the way you provide lectures. I will be in your next one regarding this topic when you post it. Thanks!
@@MacSmithVideo I’d imagine they probably would hate him too. Both writers were anti reason(ism),anti system, saw the groundlessness of being. Dr wolfs most know for his Kant.
I finish lecture 1. Like him , I interest Freud because the Frankfurt school. But I dont see a solid justificaton of psychoanalisis as a method of studying the mind and its disorders. I rather believe the actual skepticim of S. F. and psychoanalysis as Popper and M. Bunge had warned.
He has presence, is 83. But it's hard to pull off the statement 'I'm a philosopher', even when the full statement is 'I'm not a medical doctor, I'm not a psychiatrist, I'm a philosopher..'
"My name is Robert Paul Wolff and this is the first of fourth lectures on a fraud of Zigmund Freud". Please excuse me of my remark. I found lectures of Mr. Wolff very interesting and inspiring. Can't wait for his lectures on Marx.
Hello Mr Wolff, I would love to see you in a debate with Dr. Jordan B Peterson, who I think has quite opposing views than yours. I feel like in the current times there aren't too many authentic left-wing thinkers who could hold their ground in a debate, but if you feel like your views are true and authentic, and you could explain them in a reasonable manner, I would love to see two great minds fight it out for truth.
Oh shut the fk up. Jordan Peterson is a hack intellectual funded by the Koch brothers to spread neoconservative propaganda. He isn't even remotely close to being on the Wolff's level.
Prof. Wolff is an actual philosopher. I doubt he has even heard of Peterson, or cares. He studies Plato, Kant, and Marx, although is familiar with the whole history-his textbook is standard in many intro philosophy courses.
I came here to learn how to better teach Freud to my students. I learned a lot, but I wish that he didn't start out with his political beliefs and that he didn't discount civilization and its discontents. I think this guy is a very slow lecturer and spends too much time talking about random crap without making a point.
meh I liked your lectures more when you didn't try to push your political agenda down everyone's throat. At the time of the Kant lectures, when the election was still ongoing, you expressed your political views too but imo in a less forceful and more neutral way. Everyone is entitled to a political opinion but presenting it as some kind of truth without any facts to back it up make you come of as another sociology professor who is trying to push a political agenda. also since you don't seem to know what an ad hominem is here is a link that explains it so you don't have to make the mistake next time when talking about people you personally don't like: yourlogicalfallacyis.com/ad-hominem
wait are you trying to teach the definition of ad hominem to a political philosopher? Not every conversation has to have an academic structure. And since political philosophy is Dr. Wolff's main contribution to the canon of western philosophy, politics lies at the very center of his work. Professor has been gracious enough to provide these free lectures, so technically no one is shoving anything down your throat. If you don't like the material you can just click away
Richard, looks you have mistaken the political anecdote as truth. Pay attention to the contrasts he makes in the first and last parts of the lecture for the correct answer.
