Re: art, you could do a fan art contest for images inspired by the previous week’s chapters, with the winner getting a free month of top tier. So, fans could do contests and professional artists could collaborate with you to get their designs into your shop to be offered for sale to your fans.

Don't fret the release date. A friend of mine was traditionally published and his release date was moved at least twice and the book was a year late. It happens, the book will be better for it, and we're all excited to read it when it IS ready! 💖

My son was 4 and jumped off the swing at school the Friday before Thanksgiving break and got a buckle fracture in his left arm. Then we got a snow storm and had feet of snow to deal with before we could go to the ortho group to get his cast the next day. Then 2 years ago same son now age 10 was playing pee wee football and was blocking and got ANOTHER buckle fracture in the OTHER arm. Like you said mom's know their kids and when mine cried and took his helmet off I knew it was serious because he LOVES football and will play with pain if it's not that bad. I hope Evie heals quickly and feels better!

"Buckle fractures are a type of broken bone that almost always affects kids. They're an incomplete fracture, which means the break doesn't go all the way through the bone. You might see buckle fractures referred to as impacted fractures or torus fractures. Buckle fractures get their name from how they happen." I think the bone buckles, but doesn't break.

I broke my first bone (two of them!) in November at the age of 42! It required surgery and everything, it was so hard! I'm glad she's doing better ❤️

Ooof! I've missed a preorder deadline and I made that same decision! I'm locked out of preorders until this summer. Got my fingers smacked and lesson learned. I feel ya! No more preorder setups unless the book is done.

BROKEN CHAPTER SOCIETY… I CANNOT WAIT!!!! My gut says as long as the source creators are paid and you include a disclaimer … maybe? I’m so twisted in knots about the whole situation, I don’t know. The only thing I’m certain of is I won't use it in my writing either. AI isn’t going anywhere, and in my opinion, ignoring it in hopes that it goes away isn’t the answer. Right now I’m thinking it might be more about learning how to use it ethically than deciding whether or not to use it at all-but I go back and forth on it all the time. It’s such a constantly evolving issue, I think we just have to go with our guts and do what feels right. It’s not like we can’t change our minds as we learn more. I like the idea of fan-created art so much more, but I know that’s not always practical. Anyway, that was a lot and probably wasn’t very helpful. I should have just said, GO WITH YOUR GUT, SARRA. :) Safe travels and have fun!

Missed today chat but I'm glad Evie's doing well. It is really hard to know when to go to the emergency room. When I was younger I was doing my dadas hair and he lifted me over his shoulder my my arms so I could sit in his lap. Then my mom noticed I was using my other hand on the railing to go down stairs (the one farthest from the railing) and asked me why and I said my arm hurt. she watched me the next few days and when she went to dress me one day as I normally did it myself at that age and I went to put my arm though my shirt and winced and pulled my arm back, that was when she realized something was definitely wrong did x-rays and ultrasound and they found that my shoulder had been dislocated the whole time. My dad felt terrible but I wasn't crying or anything it just hurt to lift my arm. So goo on you mama for just trusting your gut!!! Otherwise great chat today and i'm sad I missed it hahaha but I will be there next week :)

Loved the livestream!! I'm honestly SO SO SO excited for the Ream launch!! As far as the usage of AI, as an artist who is active in a lot of artist communities, two of the major ethical issues I find that come up for lots of people in regards to AI is the fact that it's often trained on stolen art, and even if not, usage of AI means that a human artist lost that opportunity (I know lots of artists in the creative/entertainment job market who are really struggling atm bc they can't find work or their position was replaced by AI, so even the more ethical uses of ai can still be a touchy subject bc it means less work available for human artists overall). However, I love the idea of fanart contests! I think it would be a really great way to engage the community too. I do like the idea someone else suggested in the comments here that the winner could maybe win a free month of the $20 tier, (and maybe you show off the entries at the end of the Ream livestreams or something?). I also like the revenue sharing idea for art that you end up using commercially. (also, imo there's a different between hiring someone on the basis of paying them only in "Exposure", and saying "I love this thing you voluntarily made, can i compensate you in xyz way if I want to put it in my store or monetize it?" and Also, most fanartists do not make fanart with the intent of selling it or making money. It's a love language for the source material and has a different vibe/culture around it generally). As a comic artist/illustrator, who is also a HUGE fan of your work, I have to say that I honestly am SO excited at the idea of the fanart contest in particular :D and the ream community/subscription in general :) (also sorry this comment got so long!)

I'm going to chime in briefly on the AI discussion. My concern is that much of the current AI is 'trained' on art made by other creators without credit or recompense. I think the folks who are paying for the source material gives me less heartburn, and I would definitely credit the source material. (A lot of my writer friends have had their work used to train AI without permission or compensation.... : ( ) Glad Evie is heaing - she's such a cutie!

As an artist: For this particular usage, I wouldn't be upset about AI being used. It's a "poor mans" tool to me, and just to have quick 'throwaway' images made from it. If you go the fanart route, I don't think that's "paying for exposure" either. It's more "hey, if you as an artist would like to contribute, cool! if not, no biggie". You definitely are someone who'd give full credit to the image and more, so I do not think any artist would have any loss by submitting fanart to you to use. You could always offer something in return (free downloads or something), or even a feature of the artist at the end of a coffee chat. Heck yea free advertising for an artist is always welcomed 😂 I think people are very afraid of bad actors we've seen, but you are nowhere near like those people and you aren't the type of person to take advantage of someone else. Good luck with the Ream subscriptions!! Can't wait for more Witch's Key :)

If you don't understand it, it might not be the right kind of experience for you! Which is fine! Community isn't important to everyone! This is an ongoing community experience that includes early access to a new serialized story. If it's not right for you, but you still want to read the story, you can buy just the story when it's published. The subscription is for the super fans who want to interact as part of the online community experience, get the story early, and be part of the decisions etc. It won't be right for everyone.

Watching on the replay. The mention of AI art had me grimacing. I confess I loathe the very concept of it. I suppose if there was an ‘ethical’ model then maybe but I doubt such a thing exists. I personally wouldn’t touch AI art with a ten foot barge pole. If I try and see it just as an author, and I try to be generous about it, I still view it as a slippery slope. Like if as a writer I go “well AI art is helpful to me” then who will stand up for writers when story AI gets as big as midjourney is for art? Personally I feel like as creatives we all need to stand together. If Ream is all about community then I see no harm in people pouring their love into fanart and sharing that - it’s what fan communities do. I just posted some fanart I painted this morning. But I feel like such a thing should be fan led. Like if people make something because they are inspired, not because it has been solicited as you wanting a certain thing. Maybe that means some chapters get a lot of love, and some get nothing, but that’s natural I feel. Anyway thank you for being thoughtful and considering about this topic. It is controversial and I do have strong feelings. Hopefully I have expressed myself nicely. The last thing I would ever wish to do is be nasty. I wish you all the best of luck with your subscription. Also all the healing vibes to Evie. I’m glad to see her in such high spirits after such a shock.
