___
Shortly after exiting the plane, this skydiver had a premature opening and got entangled with the lines.
Fortunately he cleared the line entanglement from his body, but his body rotated through the risers as his canopy opened, which caused a step-through malfunction.
He cutaway and decided to burn some altitude in freefall before pulling his reserve because there was a group of wingsuiters exiting after him and he didn't want to be in their airspace under canopy.
Main Canopy: Leia 75
What caused the premature opening?
As the jumper was climbing out of the plane, he rubbed his rig against the door frame, which popped his main closing pin.
It’s always good practice to rotate your rig inwards towards the center of the door while climbing out to avoid rubbing your rig against the door.

I once cut away at around 6000ft and my main was about 8 kilometres away. That was above 8 maybe 9000ft maybe even more. I wouldn't cut away again that high, as long as everything is out and the lines are free of me I would ride it lower, if the canopy was like this one above my head. But again that's my opinion . Opinions change under pressure, but from my experience.

Is knocking the pin out easy? Seems like it would be an easy accident, and since it's on your back you wouldn't notice until someone pointed it out or you jumped and discovered like this. Do ripcords operate under the same principle with a pin holding the flaps together?
@jokeraltman2343
@jokeraltman2343 6 лет назад
It happens frequently enough that every plane I've been on has stickers that say "make sure you get a pin check before exiting". I've seen everyone from newbies to 1000 jump divers request pin checks on the ground, at 9000 feet on the ride up, and they feel for it just before exit. unfortunately I cannot answer your question on ripcords.

@@ianrasmussen5380 skydiving has grown and been researched for many years. I'm sure if there was a better design it would exist. If not, maybe the pin is the best design there currently is.
@lol-pu3mv
@lol-pu3mv 6 лет назад
Imagine his rig and the door at the exit. He has his main pin close to the edge of the door with his body still inside the plane. His buddy in white is too far back and not giving the pre-deployer enough room. He easily could have scraped it on exit causing the bag to dump early. This is why in AFF they teach you to get into the float exit by rotating your back away from the edge of the door to reduce the risk of popping a pin. Pins are great for deploying when you want as long as you dont touch them. Pins can pop just by sitting with your back against the wall on the ride up. That's why we gear check before exit.

So early deployment and lines around the legs is freaky, but he cleared the legs right off so what specifically was the reason for the immediate cutaway? He obviously had a lot of altitude (30 seconds before reserve deployment), so why would he not try to work the line twist/mess for a bit and see if he could salvage the ride? Am I not seeing something? Thanks for any insights.
@davidjorgensen877
@davidjorgensen877 3 года назад
@cameraflyer Would correcting the line twist not have possibly freed the slider? With that much altitude, why not give it the old college try? That 30 second freefall waiting to see if my one remaining canopy was functional would've seemed an eternity, so I probably would've gone at it a bit longer before cutting away. That said, he made a perfectly rational call, and I'm probably just over-analyzing after the fact.

Not everyone elects to jump with an RSL, especially on smaller ellipticals. I’m firmly in the camp of ‘RSLs have saved more than they’ve killed’ but I had a pretty hectic spinning mal on Saturday which had my rotating horizontally on my back and, due to my RSL, my reserve pilot chute ended up coming under my arm. All good with the exception of a few line twists on my reserve but still a little unnerving. I will nevertheless continue to use an RSL and have a Skyhook on my new rig.
@base615

@cameraflyer You can but, in my experience of a horrendous spinning mal where I was getting blurry vision, it was the last thing on my mind. My RSL deployed my reserve while I was spinning on my back and I had to deal with reserve line twists but otherwise ok. I've been completely calm and aware for all my other mals but that one was hectic and I couldn't have even told you what altitude I was at at the time, let alone having the presence of mind to disconnect my RSL.

I feel he still could have cleared the mal. I didn't see any line overs and with that much altitude, attempting to fix the line twists still seemed a viable option. I wasn't there, clearly, but chopping should be the last resort i.e. you have done everything, like clearing the line twists and finding a line over or no control, or you are too low to have time to fix the mal but still above decision altitude. Not trying to bash on his decision as it is still viable but personally would have done different.
