What happened
After borrowing someone else's container/harness and also forgetting his glasses before boarding the plane, this skydiver proceeded to do a 90-degree turn straight into the ground. He bounced pretty hard and broke his leg on impact -- he also lost both shoes for those of you wondering 😉.
** Why did it happen **
Low Turn
This jumper decided to do a pretty dynamic, front-riser assisted, 90-degree turn out of a sort-of stall surge at a low altitude. It looks like he didn’t have enough altitude and didn’t try to stab out of it.
Unfamiliar Gear / Lack of Proper Gear
He noted that he was borrowing someone else’s harness and forgot to bring his glasses on the jump. Both factors likely played a role in this incident.
** How could it be prevented **
Gear checks and flying the plane down
This jumper said that HE JUMPED WITHOUT HIS GLASSES. If you need corrective lenses, they should be part of your gear check on the ground. If you get on the plane without them and realize it halfway to altitude, you should fly the plane down. Not being able to see your altimeter, other canopies in the air, or (evidently!) how fast the ground is rushing up at you, puts both you and other jumpers at risk.
Get familiar with new equipment
If you’re using someone else’s gear, you shouldn’t go straight back into swooping. Take a few jumps to get comfortable with how it flies before returning to your normal routine.
Give up the swoop
One of the most important things that a lot of canopy coaches do in their courses is getting students familiar with stabbing out to abort a run. It’s a very important skill because a lot of people don’t realize how much harder it is to stab out of a dive when you’ve got some speed built up in a turn. Jumpers need to be ready to give up a run to prevent themselves from slamming into the ground like this guy did.

I've done these stall surge front riser 90s onto final with less than 200 jumps, with a 150. They scare the hell outta me. There's no denying that my mind's instinct is telling me to stop what I'm doing and focus on keeping the wing level, get accuracy in the LZ dialed, and enjoy learning wingsuit flying. Thrusting my body toward the ground at a few hundred jumps just keeps looking to me like a ticking time bomb. I saw a video of a young dude pounding in, having just started his recovery arc. Died that day, possibly on impact. Swooping looks cool, til it doesn't.

I've never swooped. Can someone explain to me how you prevent that from happening? I assume he should have cancelled his swoop turn and when it was too late and low. But the description talks about stabbing out to abort a run? How do you stab out? How do you abort a run? What were his options before it became too late and how does he mitigate damage once it started? I assume at that angle PLF probably not helping him either.
@airbornestormer7016
@airbornestormer7016 4 года назад
There is no aborting once you have started but you can pull up to an extent with your rear risers... that is also how you steer, instead of using the toggles
@MrScillage
@MrScillage 4 года назад
Stab out = stab the toggles to change the pitch of the canopy and reduce the descent rate. Abort by not turning as much or changing the pitch of the canopy higher up once you realise you are low. That's either using the rear risers or toggles.
@MrVoodoo72
@MrVoodoo72 4 года назад
Start with more altitude. When you begin practicing you start with more than enough altitude to recover with plenty of room to spare and work your way down. This jumper started way too low. Most of the guys I know are in the 700' range to begin their turns (I live in a high altitude area about a mile above sea level so they have to account for that too)......this jumper looked like he was only 100-200' when he started the turn. Wayyyyy too low.
@phutton88
@phutton88 4 года назад
Rear riser input influences drive. Toggles kill drive. Try any big dive up high with a toggle or front riser, and go half flare after your heading change-you'll pitch up instantly and end the flight cycle. If you don't understand what a flight cycle is, Google Flight-1 skydiving right now. Flight cycles are bad when flying at final leg altitude.

Classic Incident pit. Small thing like forgetting your glasses, add in a borrowed harness and thats it. You're in the incident pit good and proper. One more small thing goes wrong and you've lost the ability to recover. Stop...return back up the slope when there is still time. Even if it means failing to achieve the days goals. Not easy to learn to do, I've had some hard lessons myself, fortunately survived to sound like a know all now, but seriously ... watch for the pit. Also, I once saw a pedestrian get hit by a truck on the highway in Africa and his clothes were knocked off him. He ended up dead in dirty underwear.. I'd never believe your jeans could be knocked off you by an impact, until I saw it.

PLF guys! Always remember the procedural landing fall, it can and *will* save your ass. They realised early the landing was going wrong and conciously made the move, to instead of moving away from the surface that *was* going to break bones, they at the last moments, made sure to put their feet out for the PLF. Without that, their spine was the next in line to take the brunt of the landing. PLF guys!I It can make the difference between limping, and spending life in a wheelchair

I don’t even skydive but why did they do that? It seemed like the worst possible decision in that situation especially since there was sand right next to them

Different people have different preferences regarding risk. For me, I've never understood why people like to pile on a bunch of risk on to the end of their skydives. Didn't you have enough fun in free fall? I guess not for some! It just doesn't seem like a very good risk/reward trade-off to me. If you want to go fast across the ground buy a motorcycle or a sports car. Intentionally putting your canopy into a death spiral low to the ground is simpy a bad idea. Ranks right up there with IV drug use and autoerotic asphyxia; Just say no to swooping kids! ;)

I.m a beginner skydiver so my number of jumps, canopy size, experience etc stop me from thinking about any swooping or anything similar..but even with that I think if you want skydiving for very long time you should minimize risks all possible.

I remember when I used to think that way. Now I dream of the day I get to purchase my first cross-braced canopy. Probably not for a while.
