Hey Mike, do you have any advice to get clean captures from tape footage. whenever I have shot with my XL2 the images look lovely, but I can never seem to get files that are as high resolution as yours. Also as a side note, this video is absolutely wonderfull and captures such a carefree feeling.
I just captured the tape from the xl2 via FireWire into Final Cut Pro back in the day. I’d save all my masters as 480p ProRes files and for this one I just brought it into Davinci in a 4k timeline and retimed shot by shot

How much was the material subjected to computer color correction? And...how is the remastering process going?What kind of tools?
It’s all good now, I got a refund and ended up finding a Canon XH A1 which is just as good. Made a couple videos on my channel, some people thinking it was a new camera that was 4K lol. But still, nothing will beat that digital but analog grain from earlier cameras. Live the content, can’t wait to see more❤.
mike your making the xl2 look like the varicam. desert island, would you take the xl2 over the dvx? I didn't realize the xl2 sensor captures 270,000 more pixels than the dvx, i can really tell here even after the compression
These videos are great! I’ve been thinking about getting the XF605. I’m wondering if I can get footage like this, and I mean like achieve this look with grading.
Two completely different cameras with different sensor tech, firmware, etc. If you want the XL2 "look", get an XL2 and learn it. you'd be saving a lot of money in the long run too. If you are trying to achieve the look of Mini DV, shoot Mini DV.
