Friday Night Funkin' is an open-source rhythm game that was first released as a demo in 2020 for a game jam. The game is developed by a small group called The Funkin' Crew Inc., with the four founding members being the Newgrounds users Cameron Taylor (ninjamuffin99), David Brown (PhantomArcade), Isaac Garcia (Kawai Sprite), and evilsk8r. The game shares gameplay features with Dance Dance Revolution and PaRappa the Rapper and borrows aesthetic influences from Flash games. The game has been credited with increasing traffic to Newgrounds, a website that was most popular in the early 2000s.
The player character, Boyfriend, must defeat various opponents in singing and rapping contests to continue dating his love interest, Girlfriend. Gameplay involves hitting notes with timed inputs while avoiding losing health throughout the song.
