This Peter Berg Joint, starring Billy Bob Thornton and Connie Britton, explores the insane world of High School Football in Texas Circa 1988. It follows the Permian Panthers as they attempt to win the Texas 5AAAAA State Championship. Based on a True Story, and eventually the inspiration for the long Running series, which would later break stars like Kyle Chandler, Taylor Kitch, Michael B. Jordan, and Minka Kelly, Jesse Plemmons. you cant imagine the feeling of watching this moving as a kid growing up in Texas, "State" was embedded in our heads since middle school lol

I was in Highschool on the other side of the State of Texas when this happened. I remember following them in the rankings. I love how this movie doesn't fit the standard sports movie trope, struggle through adversity, win in the end. It's the truth.

P.S. in the scene with the famous halftime speech near the end. The real Boobie Miles (dressed as a coach ) is standing next to the actor who portrays him.

I just cant side with the TV show over the movie. The soundtrack, filming, and casting of the movie is just on another level. So emotional and raw and real too- never get through without crying at least twice

I do t know if anyone has mentioned it yet but I read somewhere that within the past few years or so, they revoked the Dallas carter state championship after they found out that that some of the players weren’t actually in high school. They were older than high school kids.

Explosions in the sky is the band that plus the music in the movie and the show. I’m pretty sure Peter berg has used their music in other movies as well as.

early in the movie, the Christian Ivory character had lines as well....he told boobie that the kind of shoes on your feet dont matter & i can knock you out in a pair of flip flops....but overall he didnt speak much...

Some of the most authentic hits I've seen in a movie. This and Bull Durham are my two favorite sports movies.

Very good movie and the ending with the coach removing the plates with the names of the former players and putting those of the new team, while the protagonists say goodbye and the band's theme plays in the background: Explosions in The Sky - Your Hand in Me , a great and powerfull lending, that's how movies should end, always with a good ending.

I had to rewatch you guys' reaction because it's so good. I hope you return to reacting. I only rewatch the great reactions because it makes me feel good and I appreciate talented people critiquing. Plus, I love this movie. Billy Bob, while well-known, does not get the accolades I feel he deserves. He is also a talented musician and I have all of his group's albums..he is in the outlaw country genre. His groups is called The Boxmasters (of course a little sexual innuendo lol). Cheers guys!

Boobie Miles' story was polished for this movie. There was no feel good moment on the bus. I heavily recommend the book too.

Permian vs. OHS was a true rivalry in a Odessa. It was east side vs. west side, rich vs. poor. Permian made it to where they would get kids from the south side manly black kids who played well to play for Permian even though they were in OHS district they would pay for kids to move to Permian district. Back in the day you lived passed Tom Green you were considered a privileged p.o.s who went to Permian😂

Billy Bob Thornton was a way better casting. The TV version felt like a PG -13 squeaky clean version of a football team. They told a better story with the movie

I felt so bad for Boobie, and when I first watched the scene with him & his uncle, I teared up a lil bit. I went to school with a bunch of guys like Boobie who seemingly had their life planned out for them & it was taken away via injury or because of academic probation. I've seen a lot of them have that "What am I gonna do now" moment, and watching that car scene reminds me of that look in their eyes when they're faced with that question.

I read the book in college and then we all saw the movie. We ALL felt it for Boobie Miles when it hit that car scene after leaving the locker room. The unnecessary pressure these kids have on them in places like that where Football was considered basically it's own religion.....it is BEYOND reprehensible. I understand having something for kids to be a part of and it's great seeing the community rally behind them and all .......BUT......it doesnt mean they have to enable them with blindly passing them in classes when they should be putting in just as much work as everyone else, allowing them to part take in underage drinking, telling them they are in good health when in all actuality they need medical attention......these are still KIDS

I recommend that you see the rest of Peter Berg's films, they are very good, they are like a Michael Bay, but seriously, without Bay's nonsense like teenage jokes and exaggerations with explosions, as if he were a mature Bay. Among these good films I recommend: The Kigndom, Lone Survivor, Patriots Day and Deepwater Horizon.

It is painful to watch Boobie first cling to his medical ignorance because he's hoping against hope that his knee is ok. He's fucked because of himself and he knows it. He knows that not only will college ball not happen, he know that he will become quickly forgotten because of his attitude.

If the portrayal is accurate I’m not so sure, he seems to think he can play. I think the grown ups needed to step in. If I was coach he would have sat.

@@majormoviemadness9927 I'm just trying to say that he wants to not see what he sees, the partial tear, and he knows what that means. I put it clumsily. You definitely are set up to root for a humbling of Boobie, but you're left with... not like this.

I remember when my freshman roommate in college showed this movie to me for the first time. I didn't have really high expectations, but I was blown away by the quality of Friday Night Lights. I think you're right that this film has a "vibe". I think it's really well casted and even though Tim McGraw's character is an A hole, I really appreciated his arc. Also, this is one of those rarer sports movies where the good guys lose. I don't know why, but I like that too. Friday Night Lights is easily one of my favorite football movies. If you guys are gonna check out some Kubrick films next, please consider Paths of Glory. I love that film.
