Just wanted to say I think this event was super sweet. The pre-record was awesome, hearing people have plans and re-adjusting, and the games were great. Here's my vote for more "restricted builds" type of events for the future!
Yeah its sort of like a pseudo-limited environment. You CAN go to a prerelease event with a plan for the kind of deck you build, but you haveto be ready to make do with what you have. I do have to congratulate the crew on some really original decks too, as I probably would have just done flyers or something easy like that.
"Alex's deck is half of a top-tier Pauper deck" I mean...ok. This is kitchen table Magic, yes? Seriously though, you guys should do this more. This is the way I play Magic, and it's always been my favorite (besides Pauper because I'm broke). Love the fun decks and the idea of a limited spending pool. Thanks for the video!
I wanna say, if you'd turn this into some sort of regular game show concept - think BBC antiques roadshow meets FNPF - I'd watch every time. Oh, and some splash screens with decklists and total price and/or some card image overlays of obscure cards being discussed would be really cool.
@raku5178 Depends on the type of prize, and what they're for. "Most unique decklist" or "commander night bingo" are two ideas I've seen get good casual traction with prizes.
A little late but Wheeler is behind the counter in one shot and the way they say he was a big help implies they didnt know he was gonna be in the store at the time
This is like that Top Gear thing where they all have half an adventure buying some crummy cars and then go on an adventure, but with the cool folks from LRR and with magic!
I've heard them mention Top Gear a few times in conversation in games before, so I reckon it was definitely inspired by that, even if no-one was consciously thinking "Let's copy Top Gear!". I love it, though. Should absolutely do more stuff like this!
This was the most fun I've had watching Magic in a long time! Forget eternal formats, this was spicy as hell. I would love more of this, please! Also, Alex, you missed your chance at calling your deck #SquadGoals
So for what it's worth, per rule 118.4, you *can* dome yourself to 0 by paying life, you just can't pay *more* than you have. (I don't believe it'd have changed any outcomes anyway, just wanted to put it out there if others were curious about that.) (There's also not really much reason to unless you're setting up some major jank, but it's neat that you *can*.)
This is probably my favorite FNPF. The pre-record was great, and the 20$ restriction was a neat theme. I'd love to see more of this, maybe a 50$ EDH thing?
After seeing Adam's was mostly Dominaria and Ben's was mostly Theros-block, can we get a 'block constructed' FNPF, where each player has a different block to build around? i.e. someone takes Zendikar, someone takes Innistrad, and they can only use cards from that block. Obviously avoid broken blocks that created bad standards like Mirrodin and Urza's.
Build your own standard is also a fun format (it's based on the old Standard cycles which were 2 blocks + the core set, for this format you choose two blocks and a core set devided over any magic set from which you get to construct your deck). We played this at an invitational once, that was awesome.
@@petervanderham2921 As in ANY two blocks? Or two blocks that were originally together in Standard in the first place? - As in could I choose, say, Urza's, Mirrodin and a Core Set full of useful artifacts? Because that sounds pretty broken! (Of course, like I said, if LRR did this, they shouldn't use the accepted broken sets anyway; I just mean in general as a format overall.)
@@kyleisom839 It's probably easier for non-EDH. That way you can just pick the set's/block's best mechanic synergy and choose the best 15 or so cards that fit it, rather than needing a whole 65+!
Alex playing mono white reminds me of like the second or third episode of friday nights. "I don't even know why you have plains in a blue black deck, a rookie mistake"
I'm glad everyone had fun and all that, but if it ever comes up again, Gorgon Recluse doesn't kill things until after combat damage happens. A lot of trample damage should have happened, but 1. that is in the nature of this format. stuff gets missed and it's not a huge deal and 2. Cam and Ben had fun interactive games.
But they didn’t miss any trample damage... Cam remembered to take it game one (and even fixed it to go down to two life because he was a little off) and game two the creature blocked by recluse was a three four.
@Sir Garde That would be for cards like those exiled by Thief of Sanity. Effects like those of Electrodominance (the card) or Madness or Cascade (the ability) have to be cast right then and there.
nice gameplay! My playgroups decided to play a 50$ max commander decks, and it was a hell of a fun time after some powercreep in the group. Maybe try this one ;) ?
I made a really nice commander deck for about 30 bucks a year or two ago. If you make peace with the fact that your manabase is going to be kind of crap (taplands, taplands everywhere) you can make some really good stuff on a tight budget.
@@Tuturial464 I don't, I have so many magic channels to follow that you gotta cut somewhere haha. I thought about looking there, but I struggle to brew deck recently (got lazy of searching on Gatherer That One card that no one plays therefore is worth nothing), so it was interesting to brew by myself for once (and edhrec, for the obvious staples)
@@GGCrono Sweet! Which commander? And yea, as soon as you go into 2+ colors, the amount of taplands augments exponentially hahaha. As a gruul deck, I still had guildgate, bounceland and gainland, as well as evolving wilds. It gotta be slow as f to play 3, 4 or even 5 colors xd (not saying impossible, just that you are willing to play nothing before turn 4 haha) Also, 30$ seems pretty damn low. Even if you try to cut, there are must haves that are simply ruining the budget. With 50$ you can still afford some "fluff" such as eternal witness or sol ring.
@@Deris76 Surrak Dragonclaw. I opened him in my very first draft so I felt like it was fate. Three colors on a budget can be tricky but being in green helps with that a lot.
Why did no one build Land Destruction..... You can get ALL THE STONE RAINS!!!!! for under $20 throw in some Dingus egg and Ankh of Mishra and just BE THE MAN WHO NO ONE LIKES.
Dear lord. Heck grab some imperiorsaur if they have them down a 4 cmc 5/5 common and maybe hooting mandrils for some delve 4/4s that can be cheated out since your land destruction will have plenty of targets until they miss land drops
Ben at 29:05 is going through what I call "The Fool's existential crisis" where you're completely right about something basic, but someone is SO CONFIDENT while being wrong thay you begin to question your entire existence.
I would love to see this as a regular show - maybe with random restrictions like say pulling a colour or colour pair out of a hat and having to stick to it.
Loved this episode sooooo much. I literally went to my card boxes and made Cameron's deck, cuz it was wonky and fun and I wanted to try the madness mechanic. I ordered a few cards from card kingdom to round out a few play sets and missing prices but for $5 I'm gonna enjoy tormenting my play group with it lol.
I really appreciate Cam's clear explanations of his plays. As a new player, who doesn't know the older cards, it helps to have him announce how the cards work and when they happen. Also, I watch on my phone a lot, so deskmaster doesn't help me much, though it is appriciated.
I don't know why this ended up in my watch list again, but I didn't notice it was an old episode until I noticed the mana rack was still out of order how I flipped it in 2018, and I know it was fixed a year later 🤣 (And I did not clue in at all that it was the old YJ location)
I'm trying to figure out if I could build something like pauper Caw-Blade on a $20 budget? I have a pauper Caw-Blade deck already, but I'm pretty sure it's over budget.
I played Quest for the Holy Relic in standard. I still have fond memories of killing people on turn 2 with Signal Pest + Argentum Armor. (I mean, it doesn't literally kill, but they can't have lands for the rest of the game, so it counts).
This. This is what I love about Magic. Not the streamlined $300 Tier 1 meta decks filled with 20 mythics but the $20 fun kitchen table jank you cobbled together with whatever you could find.
I'm currently working on my first cube, which is going to have allied tris as it's theme. Grixis has a theme for Madness and Esper has a theme for Cycling
Loved the beginning segment where we got to see you guys at YJ digging through cards... I request more episodes like this in the future!! (pretty please)
"creatures that are Ancestral Recall when you cast them." Imagine if Ancestral Recall was guaranteed to draw 3 more Ancestral Recall when you cast it D:
I love this idea. It is so fun to play with these sorts of constraints, it really forces you to brew or choose strategies you wouldn't normally. Its what makes pauper so fun. but this reminds me of playing with my friends back in the day, playing on a budget is so much fun when your opponent is also playing on the same budget.. Big ups, my dudes.
This is such a wonderful idea for a stream! You get to see so many cool cards that just don't get there in any serious formats, not even EDH. I almost got up and cheered when Cam lived the Voldaren Pariah dream. Please do something like this again in the future.
"I always thought that you... play a shockland, and like dome yourself to go out on your own terms, but no, you don't even get the option to." How is that in any way different from saying "I concede"? If someone says "I play Steam Vents, take 2, I die." how is that not just a fancy way of saying "I concede" or "You got it *scoops up cards*".
Why didnt @Ben went for lethal the turn when Cameron brought gorgon into play? He could just pump minotaur and kill gorgon or double pump minotaur to win (3+2+2=7). Also you miscalculated damage to Cameron cause minotaur was still +1/+1 when does damage so it should have been 5 damage and not 4 (leavning cam at 2). Maybe cause of that confusion earlier ?
Man all these guys are making janky decks, I would be right at home, my first draft was dominaria and I drafted Boros equipments and auras centered around tiana ship’s caretaker, I temper I was running like 3 short swords, I only had one champion of flame, I might have had a Danitha Capashen, paragon, I had a valduk or 2 I was also running some dubs, frenzied rages and maybe 1 on Serra’s wings anyway I was running 3 tianas. It was terrible even though I got help from the other players there wotj deck building I won like a game maybe 2 total. But it was fun and janky
At 31:45 you could have used the Minotaur's ability to pump it twice and because of the static of the other creature giving it plus 1, it would have made it a 7/2 first strike trample unblocked, giving you lethal. On the other hand, you could have done the murder trick and still pumped the minotaur, and you could have still presented lethal. Another thing, you didn't assign the extra damage from the +1/+1 it had(it still had it until the end of combat).
Misplay By Ben in the first game. On the turn Ben murders the gorgon claw he had lethal. Combat damage happens all at the same time so he had the lord minotaur with 2 trample damage going through even after blocks due to the murder on the gorgon claw. It was blocked but had no toughness declared so it would go through. The fire hand minotaur was another 3 power due to the anthem from the lord. Ben simply had to pay to give fire hand +2 and swing for the W.
I'd be lazy as heck with that. How many cards you need to play? How many are in a pack? That many packs, then. But I also have no idea how to play the game and just like screwing with people.
