Friday Q&A With Chris Coleman: Has Virginia Tech's ACC Loyalty Been Wounded? 

The ACC never wanted us, we invited ourselves to their party and we'll never draw as much consideration as longstanding teams or teams that can raise the conference profile. The fact we would be loyal to the league is laughable from a sports and financial standpoint but, academically the university has been better served from ACC affiliation and I also believe that decision makers felt we'd be also rans in the SEC and didn't pursue membership, never considering we'd be also-rans in the ACC post-Beamer. As far as conference's current (lack of) standing and stability, I've always been uneasy that Commissioner Phillips is a Notre Dame and B1G guy. Are we certain he's not there to serve those interests, if not ahead of the ACC, at least to a greater degree than is defensible. Deal after deal with Notre Dame heavily favor their interests and we went along with the B1G/Pac-10 alliance ruse that never should've happened in light of what the B1G has done. The TV contract and expansion choices shepherded by Swofford et al that preceded Phillips are certainly more responsible for "dooming" this conference, but I can't say I feel like Phillips is guiding the league in the right direction.
