A walk through my recent reads. For some reason I seem to refer to Fernanda Melchor throughout as "MELCHIOR" adding a vowel and a whole syllable where none was warranted.
Is this a sign of aging? Everything seems to be these days. I went to the cinema last night and I could barely make out the dialogue amid all the explosions and punching. I don't think the dialog was ever meant to be the movie's strong point (they cut most of the best banter in the trailer from the released version), but it would still be nice to hear it without feeling like I'm at the bottom of a well. Ho hum.
Hope you're keeping well.

I’m so jealous of your sliding ladder. 😅 Love the wrap up, I’ve added several to my TBR now. Especially interested in Silent Spring.

I read Boy Parts after your discussing it in a previous vlog. I enjoyed it so much that i read Penance too. Of the two works, I think Penance is definitely the superior novel. I think Eliza Clark will continue to improve with subsequent novels although I'd like to see her publish a short story collection too. She seems to definitely capture the zeitgeist today in her work.

You said it better than I could. I think she's a real talent and I can't wait to read more.

Penance is a fantastic novel . Such a well written novel and explores The True Crime Industrial Complex and it's fantastic base in an unflinching way . Demands we interrogate our participation in this system . And the way social media ;it's speed , manipulation and misinterpretation is ramping up the action/ obsession is spot on

100%. Clark has a way of implicating the reader (and the author) which is tremendously compelling.

I picked up This is not Miami the other day, and I'm now rather excited to read it. I also loved Boy Parts (as well as I'm a fan, I have to say), but I'm not quite sure I have the stomach for Penance. Though if there's anyone who can change my mind, it's you!

I don't think Penance is a tough read because it's gruesome or because it lingers on horror. It's tough because the act of reading it implicates us all in the banality of evil.

You are not alone in not being able to hear onscreen dialogue. I no longer watch tv because of it. I put subtitles on for years, but if I look away from the screen I miss what's being said. My daughter tells me it's an age thing.

It can't possibly be an age thing as neither of us is more than 21 years old.

If you fancy a modern follow up to Silent Spring I can highly recommend Silent Earth by Dave Goulson.
