Greg, you gotta stop apologizing for going on vacation. You more than deserve it. You provide so much stellar content here, not to mention a great sense of community. Go, enjoy. Relax. Have fun! We will be here when you get back and - I can't stress this enough - we won't be mad that you "left" us. If we didn’t care about you, we wouldn't keep watching. There are lots of Booktubers out there. We watch you! We want you to unwind and have a blast and come back refreshed, with lots of new books to talk about. (And Teddy will do fine, don't worry. Or at least try not to worry!) Cheers! 🍻

Nothing ruins a book like having high expectations. So many books I went into with expectations failed to live up to them, whereas I am so often blown away by books I haven't heard of before. The difficulty is of course that I start creating expectations for others as I want them to read those books then as well. :D

Jayne Anne Phillips is from the same very small town my mother grew up in, Buckhannon, WV, & my aunt graduated high school with the author. All my relatives tell horror stories about that mental institution, Weston they call it, where patients were tortured & my great grandmother was sent for Huntington’s disease; she contracted TB & died there. I purchased Night Watch for my mom, our local B&N had a copy, for Mother’s Day. Have a wonderful vacation trip!
@susiekidd9183

PS: I just started Night Watch. My gawd! This is brutal & must be a fairly common experience, since it’s also the story of my family. The mother is committed & the father leaves; the children fend for themselves, relatives or neighbors take them in. In my family, when my great grandmother was taken to that very institution in the story her 7 children were left on their own since their father took off; my grandmother was 5 yrs old, her sister was 2 yrs old.

My mom & I finished the book; she read physically I listened to audiobook. We both have issues with it & I’ll hear her full review soon. Makes me feel the Pulitzer should be awarded for storytelling in general, or for lifetime’s achievement, rather than for one particular work. 😜

You go Greg! Bring home books and tons of sweaters ❤ Finished James - kind of a hard read for me, but know I enjoyed it because I’m still thinking about it. My benchmark for “wow’d “ (so far) is Demon Copperhead 😉

When I read "The Burden of High Expectations" I was holding my breath as to which book did not hold up to said expectation. I was relieved to hear Fire Exit was not the book that fell short! I have been waiting to get my copy with great anticipation! I had purchased The Trees but lent it to by brother who lost it before I had a chance to read it. I agree with MJ in Canada about having content for us avid Supposedly Fun fans so we don't go into withdrawals! Have a wonderful time!

The Trees was my introduction to Everett, and I was WOWED. It also goes a little Quentin. Read Dr No after, and it was a much more lighthearted romp. Read Erasure, and looking forward to James. It'll be interesting to see how it stacks up to your review. (And Telephone is also on my shelf to read. He's been so prolific!)

When you mentioned dysfunctional family, I thought about Daughter by Claudia Dey. I recently read it and it had all the things that you were talking about. Also, when I saw the Pulitzer prize announcement, my first reaction was disappointment over McBride and then the next one was to check if you have posted your reaction already. 😂

Percival Everett does not hold back - that’s for sure. I loved James. Then I read The Trees & my reaction was similar to your reaction to James. I hope to read more Everett soon. There’s something very smart & original about his approach to issues, which intrigues me. Happy & safe travels!

I’m also in the middle of I’m So Glad We Had This Time Together and I am enjoying it so much! It has been quite a joke in my family because I read at bedtime and have previously been hit in the face with a book, they have expressed concern this brick could be coma inducing! It should come with a disclosure for weight limits 😂😂 but seriously, so worth the carpal tunnel. I also agree about the risk of high expectations. I’ve been waiting very impatiently for The Ministry of Time. Purchased it online as soon as it was released at midnight May 7th. I didn’t dislike it, but it was just ok for me. The hype was so high, it didn’t live up to it for me. Enjoy your vacation!

Considering what you didn’t care for in James, I would urge you to read Telephone (the version with the ISBN that ends with “A”) before reading The Trees. The aspects of his writing that turned you off with James are ratcheted up in The Trees (which I very much enjoyed) but Telephone is a wonderful and more grounded book and version A has a lovely ending and will show you a greater sense of his scope. That said, they seem to have recorded a version B or C got the audio, so (as a voracious audiobook listener) I recommend a version that’s only available to be read with eyeballs 🤷‍♂️

I too purchase the book if I loved it after listening to it or reading a library loan. James floored me. Loved it. Next year's Pulitzer or National Book Award? Maybe. There are a lot of great books out there. Fire Exit sounds tremendous. I shall put it in my very VERY long TBR list. :) Ehooks. I have a Kobo and love it. I didn't think i would, but i do. I still prefer physical books, but the Kobo is so convenient and the eink makes all the difference in the world. Have a great trip.

I'm glad you picked up on the Tarantino-thing. "James" starts well but for me it nose-dived into genre fiction by the end. It certainly steals from "Djano Unchained" and Everett did something similar with "The Trees", which borrows heavily from "In the Heat of the Night" (the movie, not the novel). "James" also uses dream sequences which Everett did too much in "Dr. No" but this time it seems creatively lazy. I hope this one doesn't win the Booker because it is nowhere near as strong as Paul Beatty's "The Sellout". For a novel that tackles racial relations in the U.S, Beatty does it far better. I've now read three Everett novels, but I think I'm done. A much better use of your time would be William Melvin Kelley's 1962 novel, "A Different Drummer" this was a novel that punches you in the gut.

I enjoyed reading James and read it just after reading Huck Finn. I heard that Everett used a new heavyweight editor (Lee Boudreaux at Doubleday who also edited/published Less, Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk, Lessons in Chemistry) and that she may have had him dial back some of the satire. Beware that his other books are much heavier on the satirical humor, especially The Trees, which is something I really like about his writing. Humor with a message.

I loved The Trees, it's one of the funniest literary books I've ever read, while still being very poignant and clever. I've already read it three times :). It was an audiobook for me and I highly recommend the audio. It was my first Percival Everett book and it's a very different book than James, which I had to put aside after a mere 60 pages or so and decided to wait for the audio to become available at my library. Hope your vacation is going great! I visited Ireland in 2007 and remember it very fondly. Have fun!

I have to admit that the first thing I thought when I heard the Pulitzer announcement is "I wonder what Greg will think about this?" 😂 I did like James; it wasn't a 5-star read for me, but I thought it was an interesting, solid read - sounds like we might be in agreement about that. I do have to warn you that The Trees is much more Tarantino-esque, even than the end of James; I liked James better. I don't do so well with in-your-face, even if I agree with the points it's making. Fire Exit sounds great; I'll have to get to that soon. Enjoy your trip!!

I found this on the Trinity Website: "When will restoration and construction works start? The Old Library and Long Room, which had been due to close in late 2023, will remain open to visitors until the end of 2025. The Book of Kells will remain in place and on display for visitors in the Old Library, alongside an exciting new exhibition in New Square: the Book of Kells Experience. Restoration and construction works are scheduled to start at the end of 2025". I hope you get to cross this item off your bucket list! Have a wonderful trip.
