Fun Fact: the stunt woman for the bee scene was afraid of the bees, so Mary Masterson did the stunt herself.

Absolutely NO CGI in that scene! I worry sometimes if I watch that scene one too many times she might slip and the bees would get her 😟

Mary Stuart Masterson who plays Idgie is also in one of my favorite John Hughes movies "Somekind of Wonderful" (1987). You should give it a watch sometime. It also stars Eric Stoltz and Lea Thompson.

I watched this when it came out in the movie theater. It is my all time favorite film right next to THE COLOR PURPLE (1986). I have read both books. I read "Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe" shorty after seeing the movie. What a title, hunh! I had gotten a lesbian vibe from the characters Idgie & Ruth, so I read the book to see if I was right.😊 Fannie Flagg the author of the book has a cameo in the movie. She was the red headed instructor at the 1st seminar Evelyn & her friend attended. There are some big differences between the movie & the book. Movie- Ruth & Buddy were in love. Book-Ruth & Buddy never met. Movie-Ruth & Idgie lived together raising Buddy Jr. "Stump" for about 8 or 9 yrs. Book-Ruth & Idgie were together for twice as long, & Stump was called Ruth & Idgie's boy(son). The character Ninny was much more defined in the book. In fact, whenever Idgie & Ruth would have a disagreement/fight, Idgie would stay w/her brother & Ninny. That's how I think Ninny knows so much about Ruth & Idgie's relationship. The book also tells u a lot more about Sipsy & her son Big George & their family. I did spend time at an elder facility. Originally, I had gone to one for a volunteer work assignment for college. I ended up staying for longer than my assignment. I worked w/the Recreational Director at the facility. I would spend individual time w/residents, hand out refreshments during recreational time & call out the Bingo letters & numbers. I was saddened that school & work ended up taking me away from them. Stephen King is my favorite author. I'd say I've read about 28 or so of his works. I have several books of his in my bookcase right now that I haven't yet read. My eyes ain't what they used to be, & I sometimes get headaches from eye-strain.😟 The movie SALEM'S LOT is I believe a 2 part miniseries. It's alright based on when the film was made. I'd say it probably has a similar style to the movie CREEP SHOW which is also Stephen King. Did u know that the movies STAND BY ME, SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION & THE GREEN MILE are all movies adapted from Stephen King's stories?😊 Ok, I've talked enough. Just want to say, I really enjoyed your reaction to FRIED GREEN TOMATOES.😊👍

32:18 32:36 "He beat me" is the one thing they could not possibly let the public find out if they wanted Idgie and Big George acquitted. That would establish motive. They'd never be able to convince a jury that Idgie didn't do it.

The 2 main female leads (Kathy Bates and Jessica Tandy) both won Best Actress Oscars right before this film (Jessica for DRIVING MISS DAISY (1989) and Kathy for MISERY (1990) the very next year). Not a bad way to follow up for both of them. DRIVING MISS DAISY is worth reacting to IMO (Morgan Freeman is also in this film).

This is my wife’s favorite movie! We started dating when it was released in 91 & one of our dates that year was seeing it in the theater. 33 years later she’s watched this movie hundreds of times. I didn’t know it was based on a book. I’ll definitely get it for her. She & my daughter are avid readers & they love to read books that were made into movies. I’m glad you enjoyed it!

I grew up on a farm in Tennessee, and there was a low spot in one of the fields. My grandaddy used to tell me a story (before this movie even came out) about how it used to be a pond, but then some ducks landed on it and it froze...and they flew away with the pond. I always believed that story, and of course he knew I'd realize that it wasn't true one day. But I loved the story and the visual I had of ducks flying away with their legs stuck in a big block of ice. So this movie has a special place for me because of that.

I don't think it would be weird for Idgie to have a crush on her brother at such a young age. Because she was too young to even have a concept of sexuality, so "crushes" are different for young kids. This is more like the Freudian idea of little boys'relationships with their mother and little girls' relationships with their father. I think Mrs. Threadgoode saying she had a crush on Buddy is perfectly fine even if she is his little sister, Idgie. She's just saying she thought he "hung the moon"...she just put him on such a high pedestal of perfection.
@Anaj-us4eo
@Anaj-us4eo 24 дня назад
I completely agree. It’s strange when you meet those kind of people… you just end up with a crush. Idgie, like you said was young, not hard to have a crush at that age even with her charming dashing brother.
@airborngrmp1
@airborngrmp1 23 дня назад
'Crush' didn't always mean specifically attraction. It was used pretty widely in kids' context to mean admiration or loyalty to another in that era. Even when I was young it was a term that was only narrowly used in the context of puberty and adolescence - the idea that adults would have a 'crush' would've sounded weird.
@NoriMori1992
@NoriMori1992 21 день назад
It's worth noting that in the book Idgie and Ninny are definitely different people. Also, if Ninny in the movie is really Idgie, we know she's willing to lie in order to pretend otherwise. For example, she said she married Idgie's brother Cleo, which obviously isn't true if she's really Idgie. So we probably shouldn't read too much into her saying she had a crush on Buddy, either.
@Br0nto5aurus
@Br0nto5aurus 5 дней назад
Ninny said she married Idgie's older brother, Cleo. It would be very strange if Ninny was Idgie, referring to herself in the 3rd person, and openly admitting to an incestuous marriage. It wouldn't be strange for a young girl to be infatuated with her older brother, but for a 60+ year old woman to reflect on her own feelings for her brother as a young girl and phrase them that way? Strange. Ninny is not Idgie.

A book is always so much more engaging to read than watching the movie. Obviously, it gives the reader so much more detail, but it also lets us see more of the character from the inside. That's harder to convey in a movie.

In the book Idgie and Ruth are in love. Both actresses wanted to present the story as it was written. However, the studio was afraid of how the movie would be received given the time it was released, so they glossed over the relationship, leaving it up to interpretation instead.

Also all of us who've read the book hate that the film implied at the end that Ninny was Idgie ( she's not, and also it was made fairly clear in the film she's not so it's contradicted itself!) The book is excellent. Fannie Flagg is a lesbian and all her books are low-key gay, and very sweet, while still looking at social issues.

I don't know how nobody in production saw that last scene and didn't think, "wait, wouldn't the audience infer from that scene that Ninny and Idgie might be the same person, in spite of us introducing Ninny as the wife of Idgie's older brother, Cleo?" Because they were so clear about Ninny's identity in the beginning, they couldn't possibly have meant to imply that.

Hello Centane, I've found that if I see the movie first then read the book and if the book is better. It is like getting a second story. I like that. If I read the book first I tend to pick apart the movie if it does not closely follow the book. The Lord of the Rings and BlackHawk Down for in.stance. Blackhawk Down was historical. Telling the story with the participants in their actual locations doing their own deeds would have made it a better movie. Curse those producers.

You should always watch the movie before the book. Books are always better and if you watch the movie after you will be disappointed in it.

Centane, I saw this in the theater with my wife when it came out. Everyone overlooks a line, from "Ninny" to Evelyn, at the beginning: "I was practically ADOPTED by the Threadgoode family." ...For us, Ninny was and always will be Idgie. For this movie, not the book (which I've read). Think about it....All those intimate moments between Ruth and Idgie when they're alone. ...There's no "Ninny" around in any flashback. After Ruth died, later on in life, there'd have been no medical reason for Idgie not to marry Cleo, if they were in love. That note left on the grave at the end? Fresh as a daisy. Hasn't been sitting outside for long. The old woman knows far too much; ....She's truly telling her own story.

I'm sorry, but your cuts are terrible. You insert lines that make no sense without the scene that came before, or the scene that follows. I understand that you have to slice and dice to avoid copyright strikes, but you rendered this great movie almost incomprehensible for anyone who hasn't already seen it many times, as I have...

@@Centane It was an otherwise beautiful story. But the author in my opinion ruined it by adding the cheap punchline, ("the secret's in the sauce") turning the entire movie into a joke. Maybe being female you are inclined to forgive it. And the husband certainly deserved to die. But what if it had been a little old man telling how they had killed a domineering wife, chopped her up and disposed of her remains by putting them into a pot of barbecue for hundreds of people to unknowingly eat. Would that have been as witty or slyly cute? (Heck, that movie would have never gotten to the big screen). But as for me it is disgusting whoever they would have done it to. I like books too. I also write. But I hate it when I see an author destroy an otherwise great book by adding a hook that appeals to the readers lowest appetites solely for the purpose of attracting a publisher. The author Fannie Flagg was a comedian prior to being a writer. And comedians are always looking for the punchline in every thing that happens. But life does not really have punchlines. And neither shoulkd FRIED GREEN TOMATOES have had a punchline.
