There is a legend that Kiel's Variations op. 17 were the model for Brahms's Handel Variations. This is not true. Brahms came to know Kiel's work shortly after completing his own. Ernst Rudorff was witness when Brahms read through Kiel's score the first time. According to Rudorff Brahms said, not amused: "What are my Handel Variations other than this piece!"
