If Robin were still alive, then he probably would've played the Genie in the live-action version as well, kind of like how James Earl Jones reprised his role as Mufasa.
Fun fact: In Brazil, Robin Willians and Will Smith share the same voice actor. So yeah! The dude literally played both versions of the characters in both movies. Absolute legend!
Well let’s be honest with ourselves, if Robin Williams was still alive he would’ve done the live action genie. But will smith was a good choice though I was a bit unsure about it when I first saw it but I’ve warmed up to Will Smiths genie
True, but you know what would've made this Genie even more unique than the one we got? If he was kind of this blue, eldritch light that can transform into any actor/actress at will. So, celebrities from Will Smith to Mark Hamill, Jack Black to Keegan-Michael Key, Jim Carrey to Bill Murray, John Cena to Carol Burnett, Kristen Wiig to Tina Fey, Darren Criss to Yvette Nicole Brown, Simon Pegg to Bill Hader, Adam Sandler to Andy Samberg, Seth Rogen to Kevin James, could all come in and act for a short time (during breaks of films/shows they were working on) and put their own spin on the Genie.
@@tysargent9647 I'm totally fine with Will Smith as the Genie full time, but I do think the movie would've been cooler if they had actors come in for impersonations
If Robin was still alive, he and Will Smith would totally do this duet together, probably live during an anniversary celebration or something. *R.I.P. Robin Williams: Talented and funny as hell, and a damn good person and father*
@@teleportedbreadfor3days I think that in this case, there were only three people that could play the genie: Will Smith, Robin Williams and Jim Carrey. But Mr. Carrey cannot sing, and Mr Williams would be 71 (If you are going to have somebody barechested for most of the movie, you need him/her to have a good body!)
According to Genie rules, Robin Williams said the dead can't be brought back to life. Given that rule, Will Smith is the best this world could have done. Smith did a very good job but it just will never be the same. It is just like when Mako Ishikawa died. His understudy Greg Baldwin took over the voice of Aku and of iroh and did a very good job. But it will just never be the same.
@@BCHolbrook So you didn't notice that he's the dad on the boat at the beginning of the movie? Or was this your way of saying that you enjoyed it from the very beginning?
Literally the only good actor in that film. I liked his romance with Jasmines servant/maid 100% more than Aladdin and Jasmine. And when u prefer the romance of secondary characters in a movie, u know u done fùcked up 🧐🤔
Agreed without his name in it I most likely wouldn't have even watched it I'm all for finding new acting talent. but they need time to rise... You can't introduce them into such a big role like this they could ruin the whole film simply because their newer actors no one knows who they are Aladdin and jasmine are iconic roles to just like Robin Williams genie they picked a big name to step into the genie role which was a great start but they needed the main roles to be names people have heard of and wanted to see For example jasmine was always attitude and standing up for herself and refused to marry unless she wanted to. She was fiesty and brilliantly independant and if she made a point she made that point clear she was never silenced in the first place..... If the live actor had portrayed the character properly then they wouldn't have had to save her ass with that song which I personally hated horrible addition to the film :/ I liked the handmade though she committed to the role and working that closely with will Smith as a new actor must have been nerve recking for her trying to share the camera and not get phased out or stand in a shadow and they managed to share scenes well together Just my opinion But I agree will Smith completely carried this remake xxxx
@@sydneymartin1687 thank you 😊 wanted to make a point but didn't want it to sound rude to the actors cause they did try the roles we're just to big for them xxxx
@@Jarock316 except we all knew, even from the first teaser, that Jim would carry the film, and he didn’t disappoint. Actually neither did the move. Considering it was a video game movie, it was pretty damn good.
@@chef2042 Will Smith is such a great actor. He even said that he couldn't live up to Robin Williams so instead of trying to be him, he was his own Genie
I like how there's a distinct difference between Robin's and Will's characterization of the genie. Robin has more of a classic, cheesy and goofy personality focusing around comical nonsense, while Will has more of a modern, smooth persona, mucking around and just being cool.
Not saying this comment is bad but British should never be put into writing. Again not a bad comment but 'mucking about' should never be put into writing and not voice.
Absolutely love Will's version, he poured a lot of his music style, respecting Robin's legacy and making great choices between what was supposed to be kept and what was supposed to change.
Here after watching Once Upon a Studio, and just wanted to say that it was so nice to hear Robin Williams as the Genie one last time for a brief moment in the short. Hearing his voice 9 years after he’s passed brought tears to my eyes.
Will Smith honored Robin's memory by being his own version of the character instead of trying to mimic him, so we can have two versions of the Genie to enjoy without needing to compare who did it better.
Yeah you’re right plus he has huge respect for him he gave him a shoutout on Twitter and said that it was a pleasure to take on such a role in which Robin had before him
And that’s how we should judge a Genie portrayal, not if they’ll be better than the previous guy(or constantly be told that they’ll never be as good as the original), but if they are the BEST part of the whole movie because that’s what Robin’s Genie was and that is also what Will’s Genie was.
"Can your friends do this?" **smickity-smackity-smack** "Can your friends do that?" **slippity-slappily-slap** "Can your friends pull this, at the drop of their haaand~"
I was initially really worried that the genie wouldn’t be the same without Robin Williams, but I LOVE that Will Smith didn’t try to replace him but instead out his own spin on the character. It was one of the biggest surprises in the movie and I loved it...
There wasn't a choice. Genie character was written FOR Robin Williams, They didn't even consider anyone else for the role. If Will Smith would tried to imitate it, he would propably had failed or even if he hadn't fans wouldn't have accepted it. So basically His own spin was the only choice there...Didn't like the movie myself, but Will was the only good thing about it.
Aladdin is my favorite Disney movie of all time. I remember watching it all the time growing up. Hearing this duet, I can't stop listening to it. I love both Robin Williams and Will Smith and this just brings a smile to my face~ Genie has always been my absolute favorite Disney character. RIP and thank you Robin Williams and thank you Will Smith!
@@kaafan91 probably because the original stories so damm hard to find nowadays, classics, especially from non-european countries, are a bitch and a half to find at bookstores in america or they cost an arm and a leg to get on ebay or amazon
Cy Johnson If you're looking for a telling of the original story I'd suggest listening to the Myths and Legends podcast, in one of the early episodes he covers the original story. It's also just a really good listen and I'm not the type of guy that listens to podcasts.
Im just Abit upset they redid something that didn't need to be redone, and will Smith just doesn't have the energy Robin had when he did the role, will is a good actor he just isn't and will never be the genie. Robin was the human equivalent of crack where will is more weed, both have a style, one is just undeniably better
Dr. Jack Bright Will said he didn’t want to mimic robin performance because he said robin did a outstanding job, note: there are 2 Genies in the original story
If I remember correctly, though, the first genie could only really teleport Aladdin, which is why Jafar wanted the second Genie, who could grant unlimited wishes.
PyroGothNerd Yeah. It seems like the ring genie could likely only grant minor/small wishes while the lamp genie could grand those of almost unlimited magnitude (with a few limitations).
Want to see if I remember it correctly without googling it: Ring Genie had Unlimited wishes but his powers where weak and can only do trivial tasks. Lamp Genie had the 3 wishes but with virtually unlimited possibilities. Is that right?
I feel like Robin would be smiling at this, he didnt seem like the kind of guy that took offense easily and Will said he wanted to honor his memory. This is beautiful
Naw, Robin was very against the commercialization of this work. That's why he quit for so long, Disney went back on their promise not to make toys out of this and their promise to mot make the genie the lead in the advertising. It's very possible that the cash grab by making a nearly unoriginal remake and using it for more toys but cutting Robin out so they can technically keep their promise just might be seen as under-handed and slimy.
@@bsabruzzo well to be fair, one of the biggest reasons is because Jeffery Katzenberg- petty asshole- didn't like that he had a role in Fern Gulley and decided to fuck him over. Honestly as much as I love Shrek and a lot of other DreamWorks movies, I wish that man had been run over by a bus
Everyone here is talking about how they imagine the two of them in a competition for who will be "Aladdin's friend" I imagine it as two beings of the Genie, it could be really fun to do it as an animation
this I agree with. I remember seeing that Will Smith was scared to portray his roll. after having seen both I love both equally and feel that he did a great job of being Geine
maybe, but this movie was actually a breaking point between williams and disney, he explicitly told them hed be in the movie but he didnt want to be use for the promos, just briefly credited. and then they followed up and made him the center of the promotions and he got extremely mad at disney
I'm only disappointed in the fact that we'll never get an actual duet from these two, I mean how cool would it be if this was performed at the Grammys or Oscars & I don't watch either or.
Now that I thinking it, it would have been better if the Blue Genie ,along with Iago,Carpet,Abu,Genie Jafar, and the Cave of Wonders well were 2D in the live action remake
Let’s be real, if Robin was alive, he would have not only been 150% been supportive of Will, AND they both would probably have agreed to this duet. It just sounds so natural, you could just feel them smiling at each other and riffing off each other
@@hobbitpsi Will Smith already looks young. Robin was getting old in the 90s. Why are you offended by the fact that he would look even older 20 years later? Will Smith looks the same as he did 20 years ago. Robin was obviously not going that route.
In an alternate reality, Robin gladly passed the torch to Will and they did this duet together. I can see it clearly in my head as if I am in that reality.
I'm sure Robin would have jumped at the chance to re-record this with Will were he still with us. And he would have had so much fun with it. Hearing the blend was amazing to me and Robin would have absolutely loved it
this feels like Robin is the elder Genie, more experienced and knows how to really work the system for the benefit of his master and everyone else. He wants what's good for everyone and will guide you towards the more good wishes. While Will is the younger Genie who hasn't quite hit that age of wisdom yet. He is the mischievous Genie that wants to see just how much trouble he can get his master in, and works the system for his own entertainment and to make his master regret such selfish desires
I could imagine Robin doing his regular stand-up and then Will barges in and starting playing Friend Like Me and then Robin's like "LET'S GET IT ON LIKE THE PRINCE OF BEL-AIR!" and starts singing with Will.
animation has a certain advantage in expressing powerful imagery. Live action as the limitations of being constrained to what is possible. going past that breaks the feeling a realisms that live action brings so its tricky to get the best of both. its possible but its a lot harder to pull off.
You blended the versions so well together Robin is the OG, but Will was a pretty good Genie. He's the Fresh Genie of Agrabah. I'm sure he made Robin proud
If I had any skill in animation, I would do it, just because I saw a perfect video of both Genies having a friendly competition with each other to win Aladdin's favor.
The ending just plays so well. With Will's repeating "You aint never had a friend, never had a friend" more than Robins orginal it really help sells them tryna compete for Aladdin's wishes or attention if they were to actually duet it.
