I love Ruyi’s and Yanxi but Zhen Huan is chefs kiss -the absolute best. I’ll never forget when she said: “The Emperor has fallen..” with that tear going down her face. I couldn’t take my eyes off the screen! If you haven’t seen Empresses in the Palace WATCH IT NOW!!!!

This is a palace. The emperor has over 70 concubines. If she has ugly stretch marks, the emperor won't be attracted to her any longer. If she loses the emperor's favour, she will be treated like dirt in the palace.

Looks matter in a palace like that. There are many concubines, constantly competing for the Emperor's favour. Stretch marks are seen as a hideous blemish and Emperor's were all shallow as fuck. So, yes, it is like a terrible illness. This is Ancient China, not a privileged modern world. We are truly privileged to live in this day and age. Today, most people with stretch marks aren't treated any differently to how they were before getting them, but here, being "flawed", like having marks on the skin, etc, will put you into a bad position and you will be treated like a pile of shit in the palace. Thank god I was born in 1995 and not around in the days of old. Women especially were treated horribly back then, regardless of which country they were from.

they call each other sister, and hailin said we are only blood apart meaning they are connected in all ways except being related to each other. i don't think that's where the relationship was going, however i wouldn't doubt that there were such relationships or feelings in the harem.
