His reaction was basically me when my college roommate and his girlfriend would argue in the same room. Of if they were arguing on the phone and her yelling was so loud that she wasn't even on speaker.
Ross walked Carol down the aisle in her wedding to Susan. Chandler gave up Janice so she can return to her husband. Rachel fulfilled Mindy's wish to be the maid of honor at her wedding to Barry. Phoebe carried Frank and Alice's triplets (she was happy to do it but heartbroken when she couldn't keep one). Monica gave up her dream wedding dress to Chandler can have his band. Joey, he's done a lot of kind stuff, but convincing Rachel to move in with Ross so he can be more involved is one that comes to mind.
But all of them did all of those things because it might them feel good about doing the right thing. They got to be the good person. Or it made them happy that they made someone else happy. And they wouldn't have done any of those things if that hadn't made them feel good about themselves. So not entirely selfless.
E S. So hypothetically if you gave up your dream girl so one of your best friends could have her and you felt like you did the right thing but wasn’t happy then would that count as a selfless good deed
GalaxyGamer. There are certain actions in which we might not feel good doing it. But we feel “less pain”. In your scenario, your moral brain is compelling you to give up on your dream girl, cause not giving her up and breaking your friends heart would make you feel worse than losing her so your friend may be with her. Therefore, still selfish. No action humans beings do fall out of the concept of “self preservation”, “pleasure seeking” and “procreating”.
I just feel for Chandler sitting there and listening to all "all selfish no selfless good deeds" thing after paying for Joey's bills, food and even interviews
Joey did a selfless good deed. He didn't eat meat for 6 months because he knew Phoebe needed it, even tho she was a Vegetarian. He didn't want her to feel bad so he did it to even everything out.
well...he was happy to do something for her...that's selfish XD good intentions but still with a bit of selfishness behind it, he would make him feel good that Phoebe is feeling good
Even if Phoebe's pledge didn't get Joey on TV she only made the pledge to prove Joey wrong thus proving herself right, which would be selfish, so it would _still_ be a selfish good deed.
This sitcom covered pretty much everything that may happen in this world. Ever time something happens I say, remember when Ross/Monica/Rachel/Phoebe/Chandler/Joey ... They covered it ALL!
This is super nit picky but 4:38 is not almost entirely roughly 22 minutes. I’m aware of how much of an asshole I am, but I’m selfish and wanted to make sure everyone knew I’m right
@Moist Gnome It was recorded in front of an audience, but in what way was it necessary to basically call this person an ignorant and disgusting caveman? It would have been enough to say "Actually, it's recorded in front of a live audience".
The show had 300 fans in the studio it wasn’t “ laugh tracks “ and I expected them to laugh since phoebe use that “ my mother is dead “ as excuse for everything ...
@Moist Gnome True question here : Was the actual fuck is wrong with you? If me using the "laugh track" term as an umbrella for recorded laugh and prompted audience reaction sends in you that rage mode, what do you do when something actually bad happens?
“Well, you know, a lot of those Muppets don’t have thumbs.” ROFL! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Tbf, Chandler did have a point. What did Phoebe expect? Elmo to write her a letter? 🤷♂️
I think Phoebe giving birth to her brother's triplets is a selfless good deed. It may have made her feel good, but she didn't do it because of that. She didn't even consider that, she made that decision when she saw how happy they'll be.
Not true! She did it because of that. Remember, when she made this decision? When she gave a puppy to Frank and Alice and She realized that She will be even more happy when She'll give birth to Their baby (She didn't know about the triplets back then lol). That was the deal maker, so She did that because She knew it would make Her feel good.
There is no such thing as a selfless act or true altruism in general because we, as humans, are inherently selfish and we're made that way from the beginning.
Agreed, but that doesn't cheapen the value of altruism. Selfish doesn't necessarily mean the person only cares about him or herself while doing the deed.
Poor Phoebe has no chance here. Even if the bee would have survived, Phoebe's deed wouldn't have been selfless because she did it only to proove she's right about her point - and that itself is a selfish motivation. There's no way she can win this game. .
Actually, Ross did win argument against Phoebe if being correct is considered a victory. All Phoebe did was shaming Ross for something he didn't do and didn't make logical sense.
Nagato Uzumaki ok🤔 then what made u think ross was correct? 😅 who decided that? Actually i agree with ross tht time but... we re talking bout the scene where ross seemed desperate and speechless against phoebe... tht made audience thought phoebe won te arguement.
He made logical arguments and his position was backed up by overhelming amount of evidence and he tried to present some of that to Phoebe that didn't care. Ross was speechless because Phoebe made argument attacking Ross character rather than his position. She made incorrect argument that he abandoned his position, despite he didn't but simply admited that there is very small chance that he can be incorrect. If audience thinks she won argument that speaks more about the audience and how susceptible it's to emotionally charged rethoric. The only way I can see Phoebe being a victor if we accept that shaming your opponent out of argument as legitimate tactic to win argument, what wouldn't deterimine in any way corectness of argued position, at best popularity.
well if someone does not believe on science , they are more dumb than a unborn baby who atleast learns it , phoebe not believing in evolution is so bad written , and actually shaming someone for it , its like show is saying all kids learning about science is worthless
What’s wrong with feeling good about a selfless good deed? When someone is grateful for your assistance, it makes you feel like you’ve accomplished something. There’s a difference between self-esteem and self-confidence.
Theres absolutely nothing wrong with feeling good about helping someone. Joey is kinda right in saying there's no selfless good deed however he's wrong in the stigma he's attaching to that statement. If your own satisfaction is the only thing you get out of it that is as pure a good deed can be. It's only when you have an agenda that the good deed will lead to you gaining something else that should attract the kind of ire Joey is throwing.
From what i learned a true selfless deed is when you do something good for someone Else without expecting something in return, You may end up feeling good about It because you did something good that led to something good, but you didn't do It for that reason
A deed that didn't make you feel good? I had to take care of an elder relative when I was young. When all I wanted to do was go out and have fun. It was horrible each day was a nightmare. And it didn’t take long before I started to hate him. And myself. And wishing he died. I sure as hell wasn’t happy. And I did it so I don’t feel worse than I already felt. And when he died I was so relieved that this nightmare was over. _“People say you should always do the right thing but sometimes there is no right thing. And then, and then you just have to pick the sin you can live with.”_ - Daniel Radcliffe Horns (2013)
Only people who had to give up their life like that will understand you. I wish euthanasia was an option so we don't have to prolong dying people's suffering. The taboos around subject of death won't allow it though.
In friends tv sereis there is some self less good deeds done by ross, when he accompany Carol at her wedding, sharing ben with Susan, letting his interview for Rachel.....
Jaimin Desai What was the alternative? Where you not gonna let them be with the person they love? Was the other choice trapping them in your basement or something?
That moment where the episode ends and you wonder how Joey could have a philosophical argument like this? Then you watch the episode again you remember that Joey bought an encyclopedia Britannica, volume V. What philosophers name begins with V? Voltaire. A famous French philosopher with a cynical view on God, religion, and human beings. Most likely he read about Voltaire in his V Encyclopaedia, and now believes that there are no selfless good deeds. How's that for continuity?
Not everyone is selfish and not every selfless deed is selfish either. Phoebe didn't give birth to those triplets to make herself feel better, she did it to make her brother and his wife feel better
You know it was kind of a selfless good deed that Phoebe let herself get stung. That way there was one less bee for other people to worry about, and obviously no one thanked for it or gave her any special treatment. So Phoebe made a very rare selfless good deed
But she did it to feel good about herself for having done a 'selfless good deed'. There's no winning against someone who believes in psychological egoism.
What can be a better 'selfless good deed' than Joey giving up eating meat until Phoebe's delivery. By giving up meat eating for her, he had nothing to gain, it was the most touching selfless act for a friend.
I believe an example of a selfless good deed (based on their criteria ) could be something like giving you're seat in the subway to someone who needs it more . A lot of people give their seats to those older than them. sure you may feel good about it almost every time. But it's such a common occurrence I'm pretty sure someone somewhere just subconsciously did it cause it's the right thing to do and nothing more. Good deed without feeling good about it.
Nah. If you feel good about it or think there is some greater purpose to your deed, its still selfish because you are thinking of yourself (conscious or subconsciously) when acting altruistic. The only example of a selfless good deed is one in which it is impossible for that to occur. To act selfless is to essentially not even really possess a consciousness. If you think, you are. If you are, your evolutionary instincts dictate your motives. Thus, your actions follow your motives. There is always capital to be gained outside of materialism. Emotional and social capital play a big role in decision-making. But regardless, both are inherently selfish.
How about when parents sacrifice themselves for their kids? Imagine a single mom who became pregnant very young without planning to be, alone without no one to help her, working her ass off, hungry, begging on the streets for money so she could buy her child some food?
@@corsariocapitao The child is her offspring, it's in the parent's genes to take care of their child because that's how the offspring survive, it is still selfish because the parents wants something to be left of them when they die, and the need to be selfless with their children is so they survive and pass on their genes also. The selfish reason is passing on your genes. From the moment you are conscious like Primetime said, you ARE selfish, you can't BE Someone else, you are YOU and can't experience anything but your own experiences.
@@artyomalekseyevich5927 Ok, what if the child isn't hers? It's an abandoned child she adopted and now she is trying to find good parents for him? She's not trying to pass on her genes, but she just couldn't leave a baby to die like that even if she is in need herself
Congratulations Phoebe. Your good deed got Joey on TV on the channel you hate. So it makes sense for Joey to be happy and you to be unhappy.🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Even if Phoebe didn't feel good about donating the money it was still selfish. She didn't donate the money out of the kindness of her heart she did it to prove a point and win an argument which is selfish
I like how in their dumb world the conversation continues and branches out in unrelated directions. And how it's simply overlooked that Pheobe is doing what she's doing as a selfish act to prove Joey wrong.. So was the case when Pheobe was explaining to Joey that robots only work for Chandler's company and they don't make them 😄
