Danny was in the dark, didn't even say a word even though he obviously heard Monica and Rachel talking, and was raising a goddamn pickaxe above his head when they saw him. Of course he's going to get sprayed. He was lucky it was just a bug bomb in my opinion.

Danny saying "some people are just into appearances" (superficial, if you like) doesn't refer to the bug poison spraying. It's him judging Rachel for making presumptions about his appearance right at that moment when she sees the real Danny, and also judging her for being a cliched rich girl.

Let's be honest. The group were pretty awful to people outside the group whether they realised it or not and more often than not those characters enabled their behaviours. So for me Danny was a refreshing character in season 5 , wish they gave him more screentime though.
