I've spent a whole... roughly 8ish hours or so memorizing this speech to recite in class today. Still haven't got it down fully, but I know Brutus SURELY is an honourable man. Wish me luck mates
I personally really like this reading. I've seen the whole film though and therefore the entirety of the speech. He weeps, he is impassioned, and the scene before this speech is so powerful. I think his speed shows his put on "nervousness" of having to speak before, basically, a mob. I appreciate this delivery and interpretation of the speech! He is out for vengeance and to do that, you have to be angry - which this Antony is!
He did a fantastic job in the "O Pardon Me" soliloquy in the previous scene. Drops his friendly facade and becomes both aggrieved and infuriated. I used this version when teaching Julius Caesar to tenth graders and a couple students asked who he was. To be fair, he is also rather attractive and they are teenage girls ;)
Here's the full speech by Marc Antony. Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears; I come to bury Caesar, not to praise him. The evil that men do lives after them; The good is oft interred with their bones; So let it be with Caesar. The noble Brutus Hath told you Caesar was ambitious: If it were so, it was a grievous fault, And grievously hath Caesar answer’d it. Here, under leave of Brutus and the rest- For Brutus is an honourable man; So are they all, all honourable men- Come I to speak in Caesar’s funeral. He was my friend, faithful and just to me: But Brutus says he was ambitious; And Brutus is an honourable man. He hath brought many captives home to Rome Whose ransoms did the general coffers fill: Did this in Caesar seem ambitious? When that the poor have cried, Caesar hath wept: Ambition should be made of sterner stuff: Yet Brutus says he was ambitious; And Brutus is an honourable man. You all did see that on the Lupercal I thrice presented him a kingly crown, Which he did thrice refuse: was this ambition? Yet Brutus says he was ambitious; And, sure, he is an honourable man. I speak not to disprove what Brutus spoke, But here I am to speak what I do know. You all did love him once, not without cause: What cause withholds you then, to mourn for him? O judgment! thou art fled to brutish beasts, And men have lost their reason. Bear with me; My heart is in the coffin there with Caesar, And I must pause till it come back to me.
Aye Sir! "We are but humans on this plain of life, we come innocently into the world often along the way...instead of Leading...we follow...If wisdom does touch our hearts..we Lead...we put away the proverbial things of a uneducated actions of youth...We take our faults our sins of commission and we forge them into a sword of our transgressions and We wear it around our waist for All to witness..so that they who may draw an eye to the meaning will know...that We are human we are flawed but we changed our ways for the good of the great spirit that surrounds us in this life ..where although we are adults that has power of Strength and wisdom of time..we had a life of innocence and weakness ..a reminder of a past as we move forward"
I feel like the actor is good, but he made it like Antony was an obvious bad guy when it should be heavily speculated. I myself think he believed what he was saying but I have heard it argued about quite a few times.
Yes, of cause. If you want me to. But my comment was not meant to be an insult, but as a help to you. And of course you are entitled to the performance that you and your instructor can agree on. Do it again, only this time - take your time, and let your feelings decide your pace. Imagine, that the one in the coffin, is the one you love most of all. Could be your mother, father, heartfriend. Use all your feelings, but keep them inside your self. Apparently you talk to the people. Try to talk to your self.
Sorry, I don't understand your message (I'm old, 77, could be the reason). I recon you don't want my help, so you won't hear from me again. All the best to you. Have fun (and labor) with W. Shakespeare.
More like not homosexual ENOUGH. I want to see a goddamn kiss between Brutus and Cassius. The 2017 RSC version comes very close, but still not enough. Also, this production is beautiful, and Antony is probably the most brilliant I have ever seen.
I agree with a previous comment about delivery been too fast at times. I would also add that Anthony is addressing a crowd so his movements should be more solemn so to speak ...check out famous Marlon Brando's performance or even better (personal opinion of course) C. Heston's .
