4:09 That's one down. She says in Japanese, "まずは一匹(Mazu ha Ippiki)". In Japan, "匹 (hiki or piki)" is mainly a unit for counting insects. It is a symbolic scene in which Frieren recognizes the demons as nothing more than insects that can only speak. 20:13 葬送のフリーレン(Sousou no Frieren) The foreshadowing of the title has been recovered. "葬送(Sousou)" has two meanings in this work. The first is "to bury and send off the dead," in the sense of seeing off humans because elves live for a long time. The other is "to defeat and bury one's enemies". In other words, "Frieren the Slayer".

Interesting, In Chinese 匹 mainly a unite use for counting horses. But 葬送 has the same meaning with japanese.
@Heppoko_
@Heppoko_ 10 месяцев назад
@@EBBEBBEBBE That is certainly true! About 100 years ago in Japan, Chinese influence was still present and horses were counted as "匹". Today, however, they are exclusively counted as "頭". In the West, cattle were counted by "head" in order to check whether the number of cattle put out to pasture had decreased, and this eventually became the way of counting large livestock in general. In the 20th century, the word "head" in Western zoological treatises was directly translated into Japanese as "頭". Influenced by this change, Japanese people eventually came to believe that if large livestock such as horses and cows were counted by "頭", then naturally other large animals should also be counted by "頭", and the "頭" counting system became firmly established. On the other hand, the "匹" counting system remained as a way to count animals that could not be counted by "頭", and in Japan today, small animals and insects are counted by "匹". 感谢您提供的宝贵信息!

@@Heppoko_ Now that's even more interesting. Because for Chinese for large livestocks like sheep pig or cow we also count as 頭 or头 (traditional Chinese and simplify Chinese), 匹 is used specifically for horses. However, for insects we use 只. Anyway, thank you for sharing the information about how your people transferring using 匹 to 頭 for large livestocks. What a refresh, It's first time I actually heard about it. 教えてくれてありがとうございます!

@@EBBEBBEBBE I'm told that "匹" was originally a Chinese character referring to a pair of things. (I am a little dubious as to whether it is of Chinese origin or a concept that originated in Japan.) If there are two pieces of textiles, they are counted as "匹", or something like that. Then, why is a horse counted as a "匹"? It is because the horse's buttocks are split in two, and they are in pairs. 没关系,但我想吃中国菜。 我有时会在家里做 "西红柿炒鸡蛋"之类的东西,但我想正宗的中国菜一定非常美味。

@EBBEBBEBBE 10 месяцев назад
@@Heppoko_ I did some research on the character "匹”. So, the earliest record for using "匹” is from a book called 「尚书」, It was a unite for counting one rolled textile like silk. It's also a distant/range unite 一匹=四丈=13.33meter because when you flatten the rolled taxtile is about 13.33 meter long. And the reason why character 匹 was specifically used on counting horses is because, some rumors says the price of one dead horse is equivalent to one rolled of taxtile. 中華料理好きなので嬉しいです トマトスクランブルエッグも大好きです シンプルでおいしい

I loved that wicked smile from Frieren when shes about to leave the town to take on Aura, up until now its usually sadness, emotionless or a slight smile, that was a full on crap eating grin and damn it sent chills down my spine

This series has had a lot of fun moments, a lot of melancholic or sad moments, but what it hadn't really had was moments of tension and high stakes ... until this episode. Fern's sneak attack was such a great stand-up-and-cheer moment because it's the first time we've seen her take on a truly scary opponent without Frieren's help and with everything on the line. We *knew* we were gonna see Frieren pull some badass shit in this episode, but seeing Fern do it is so much sweeter.

It's just like Frieren to downplay her achivements. She told Qual that humanity managed to integrate Zoltraak into their magic system. But here Lügner said that Frieren greatly helped that endeavor, even modified it to be a demon-killing spell.

20:14 "Frieren the Slayer" Here in Japanese, I heard the Japanese title "Sousou no Frieren". This can be translated as "Frieren of the funeral". I thought it meant a story of separation due to death from the people Frieren has met. Apparently that wasn't all. I liked that the Japanese title itself appeared in this scene, but it was also cool that it was translated as "Slayer". I can't wait for episode 9!

Great catch that Freiren was teaching Fern solely how to use soul track! She was training her little pupil how to be a demon slayer from day 1.

I don't think the comments were wrong though. Them being wild beasts doesn't change that they're just looking out for themself. Bears are predators. They'll do what they have to do to eat, and they're also looking out for themself. I don't see them as "Evil", they just don't see humans as anything other than prey. (And yes, that means I don't think you're entirely wrong either. In the end, this might just be a matter of semantics.)
@DefinitivelyZach
@DefinitivelyZach 6 месяцев назад
I see what you're saying. By the same token, nobody would say you did something wrong if you shot and killed a Bear that was attacking you. It's a bit different though because here they are intelligent and can communicate with language and that being part of their predating makes it a bit confusing to think about. Maybe they aren't evil but at the end of the day they are only interacting with people to be able to eat them. So killing them before they can manipulate you is the correct choice.
@seighartmercury
@seighartmercury 6 месяцев назад
@@DefinitivelyZach Yeah, that's fair. Killing them for self-preservation definitely makes sense. I wouldn't want to be (or try to be) friends with a demon either. I probably wouldn't "hate" them either tho. (barring extenuating circumstances)

Even to the present point in the manga, it's not 100% clear whether magic staffs strengthen the mage's power or if it's just an aid to focus it. I would personally lean more toward the latter, since we never do see Flamme use one.

Hehe, if you’re comparing to Demon Slayer (Kimetsu no Yaiba), then Frieren would be like Sanemi, the Wind Hashira. He hates demons and won’t believe there are any good demons, and his Breathing style is Wind… like how Frieren seemed to use air pressure or wind to cut that demon to pieces.

While I won't make apologies for the demons, I do have some empathy for them. They're simply predators, it's their basic nature. While they are conceited in their attitude towards humans, I don't know if you can really call them malevolent or evil anymore than you'd call a man-eating tiger evil. Of course they're still a threat that needs to be put down, as you wouldn't try to reason with the tiger either.
