Well this shoot-out / comparison video turned out to be WAY longer than I thought it would be. But hey, it was fun to make and I wanted to share my findings!
Can you fake strings? Apparently you can...?
Ever since I heard about Reason's Friktion I wanted to get it, but with the steeper price tag, it took me quite a while to save up and get it. Now that I have, I'm very happy to say that it has met my expectations. However, I wanted to do a truly honest comparison between Friktion, a physical modelling synthesizer and a sampled library of solo strings-- in this case Amber, by Orchestral Tools (a library which I love). How would the two compare to each other? Is it possible to fake strings? How does one go about comparing 'fake' (modelled) strings to 'real' (sampled) strings? What's the fair way to go about it? What on earth IS physical modelling synthesis?! How did sampling become a thing? The rabbit trail kept going deeper.

Sidenote: In the video earlier on I mention that I wanted to compare the "doubling" effect of Friktion to one Spitfire's string libraries... then I forgot that I wanted to do that and because of the length of the video I decided not to add it in at the end-- the comparison was already in depth and I didn't want to make it even longer. That being said, I have since tried this out. The "doubling" effect of Friktion does not par up to a real string library. Though you can get it to sound decent, there's something about a big group of live string players that I think would require an entire other plugin to emulate.

I found it very interesting, but after trying a lot of strings vst and plugins, I think the "best sound" I found is the Hanz Zimmer one by Spitfire (couldn't afford it yet as it cost as much as a new freaking pc component), but the best choice would be layering both sampled and synth strings to have the best result (and boil up the cpu)

There is a company doing this mixed sound, but price is also very high to purchase the plugin!

Hi, I just found your channel and this interesting comparison. Thanx a lot for it! May I ask you a question about the Orchestral Tools Sine Player in Reason - since you use Amber which I also like so much… ? I’m having trouble automating some of its parameters in Reason with midi controllers, besides Velocity and Expression. The other ones - listed in the option tab of Sine Player - I can’t do nothing with’em, they don’t react to the moves of my faders or knobs, and I can’t automate them by hand, either. Is it a Reason (my DAW of choice) problem, a Sine Player one or am I making something wrong? Thanks for your answer if you have one… Have a great day!

First of all, glad you found it. Second question... let me look into this and I'll report back to you. For myself, I've usually stuck with Velocity and Expression and done other mixing inside the VST itself-- I agree SINE Player isn't the most... intuitive in working with Reason! I'll have a look and tell you if I have the same issue.

Yes, I've found the same thing. I can control Expression, Velocity... And I can assign some few MIDI CC controls, but hooking it up to a Combinator, for example isn't possible. I wonder if it would be good to write to Orchestral Tools about it?

That’s the next step I thought of… Since I feel like home in it, I don’t want to work in another DAW than Reason for orchestral stuffs, but I’d sometimes like to be able to automate some more things in OT libraries… Not a dealbreaker, though. By the way, your videos of sampling in NNXT are great! And thank you so much for your time!

@@pako4791 I get what you mean, I have Reaper as well and have heard good things about Bitwig, but I still prefer Reason's more visual layout and find it a powerful DAW, so why switch? Haha! Happy to help! Hey, if we both email them, maybe they can give some insight :)
