Why do my Series 7 chairs break or come loose?
In 2002, the Fritz Hansen Series 7 production was changed. Instead of a wooden mounting plate, which is glued to the seat, it was replaced by a plastic plate. These plastic plates come loose after a period of time because the glue does not adhere well to the plastic, and the plates tear due to use.
How do I repair your the Fritz Hansen chairs?
The Series 7 chairs will be glued up with a new wooden mounting plate. The wooden plate and glue are specially made, based on years of development and material testing. This is done in my workshop, for antique furniture restoration, based in The Netherlands, The Hague, founded in 1996.

The use of the plastic plate since 2002 is the reason why the seat comes loose from the base. I never receive chairs with a wooden plate from before 2002, so that system still works to this day.
Gluing the wooden plate
The wooden plates are glued with clamps under high pressure until curing is achieved after 24 hours.

On the bottom of the chair is the new wooden fastening plate is glued and the base is mounted on top. On the left are the old cracked plastic plates that came loose.
When gluing your Arne Jacobsen Series 7 chairs, the plastic plates are replaced with a wooden in-house engineered plate that, like the glue, has been extensively tested over the years. Of the hundreds of chairs we have glued, with this system so far, none have been returned.
