Louis Ciardulli, a New York City student who suffers from a rare bone disease, osteopetrosis, has turned 13, and is transferring to a new school. Correspondent Morton Dean talked with Louis, who underwent experimental transplant surgery to address his condition. He also talked with his family and teacher, and attended Louie's graduation day at PS 201, a day filled with pride and uncertainty. (Originally broadcast on "Sunday Morning" on October 25, 1981.)

Bless this family. Good to hear that Louis had another nearly 20 years before his death at age 32. Remarkable young man. Really, a miracle! Still inspiring people, even in 2019! Go Louis! :)

What a story! He died at the age of 32, which was incredible considering all the medical complications. Also, how crazy to see the whole family sitting in the front seat of the car driving into Manhattan, no seat belts.... Boy, we've come a long way.

Dead Faces I’m assuming the original poster was surprised because a child can’t be in the front seat at all.
@mindylepooh

@@clevaconley2221 Yes that was my reaction - forty years ago a child could sit in the front seat of a moving car, sandwiched between his parents, and nobody would bat an eye.

Such an amazing kid... Sadly he died in 2001 July, 2001: "Louis Ciardulli died last month. He was 32 years old. His sister, Lisa, is 27 now. Joe and Dolly still live in Queens, New York. Joe: "With all his pain, if he could bear it, if we could, we would take him back again and do it all over again. And that’s the truth." Lisa: "He cherished every day of his life. And he made everybody feel special. No matter how much he went through, evryone was just always important to him." Dolly: "He was a joy. He was a joy for 32 years, with all his troubles. And I would go another 30 years to take care of him." And, finally, from Louis himself, who said in 1981: "I believe in God, you know. I pray sometimes when things are not going well. Well, I pray all the time, but I pray extra harder when...things are not going well. And if you want things to go right, then I pray a little harder."

I remember seeing him on TV in 1977. I was 7 then. I don't have an incredible memory, but seeing and hearing a story like this as a 7 year old, I did not forget. I even remembered that his dad was a bus driver who had tried to find a cure. It is amazing to me to see this story after 42 years. Rest in Peace Louis.

Thank you Louis, your still in our hearts, and in my soul now. Your so right, smiling is better than crying. Facing death in the face, yet keeping smile is truly the strength of love and faith. I too have a uncertain future, and when that day comes. You and I can smile together. God bless your family. And thank you for sharing your personality and inspiration for life. Rest in peace my new friend.

I hope that someone eventually stepped in to advocate for the younger sister. That wasn't right that she had to go through so much just to extend her brother's life. And it was like it was forced on her without a choice being given to her. Why was the choice given to Louis but not to her? She is the first one that should have been given the choice of refusal without any repercussions. But it was like they were wanting her to feel guilty if she didn't want to do it. Reminds me of the movie "My Sister's Keeper" where the parents used the younger daughter, actually conceiving her for that purpose, to try to keep their older daughter alive by forcing painful medical procedures on the younger one. I don't know if I could have forgiven my parents if they had done something like that to me without my full knowledge and permission.

He was definitely mature even as a child. I wonder why only Lisa is the one.

liberty Ann Lisa isn't the only one to give Louis bone marrow because both, no matter the transplant, has to have similar blood types, which is more complicated then just the ABO blood types we here about. But, I think during that time period, there wasn't a huge demand to get people to donate a part of their body for the transplant program, so if that is the case, then getting someone with Louis's blood type, would be more difficult then now days.
