A tremendous giant of literature in any and all ages. Many have asked, "Who will write the great American novel?" Well, it was Herman Wouk in "Winds..." and "...Remembrance". He also wrote a two-volume history of Zionism called "The Hope" and "The Glory" which I have but confess I've been delaying reading. shame on me. Also a novel "Marjory Morningstar" which I do not have here.
I read it the first time in '74 as well. I was a junior in high school. I've read it again over the years and seen the movie, having had more life experience and understanding who the true villain was. I hope I can live as long as he did, and have the same level of mental clarity.
I read WoW and WaR when I was in high school myself. I’ve reread it once since and meant to do it a 3rd time during the pandemic but events took over. It’s definitely a saga I’ll revisit at different points in my life.
This Man was such a Literary Treasure. R.I.P. Herman Wouk! I've seen both "The Winds of War" and "War and Remembrance" on Television when they first aired. I can watch both Television Mini-Series over and over and over again!!!!! ❤
The Caine Mutiny was an amazing read. We watch Willie Keith grow up on the Caine. His struggles as a Midshipman. The origins of his relationship with May Wynn. The silliness of attempting to find his ship when he arrives in Pearl. Then finally surrendering to the Navy's bureaucracy. The lazy days in Pearl Harbor while waiting for his ship and entertaining the Admiral at cocktail party's and hanging out with Tom's Keefers brother Roland. The letter from his father, who seemed almost a stranger to him, as his mother was the dominant force in his life. All this before he ever set foot on the USS Caine. Even better was Willie's dealing with Capt. De Vries before the change of command and Capt Queegs first few months on board. Absolutely hilarious stuff. Not to mention the original XO, Lt. Gorton's dealings with Queeg. The novel version of Capt. Queeg is remarkably like a someone who dominates our daily news. I'm glad Herman Wouk lived long enough to witness it. Oh where is our Barney Greenwald?
This man killed my soul when I saw War and Remembrance......I recommend watching it.....you won't ever ever be the same...it shows how EVIL the Nazis were.
Both "Winds of War" and "War and Remembrance" are more than novels, their history alive at the moment it happened. You get an visceral feel for the times as they were, understand the people of the day, and both rejoice and cringe at the soul of humanity.
Herman Wouk was a great man and writer. But this CBS interview was dishonest. It managed to avoid mentioning the key fact in his writing: that his worldview was that of an Orthodox Jew. He makes that quite clear in his greatest works: war and remembrance, this is my God , inside outside , and even his early important works: Marjorie Morningstar and Caine mutiny
@@dongately2817 - actually, one would need more than a passing familiarity with a coue of wouk novels to understand the depth and sophistication of his faith. A start is his first non fiction book on Judaism, This Is My God.
Everyone is mentioning The Winds of War , and War and Remembrance which are both great books, but not his only great books, by far. I highly recommend his novels Youngblood Hawke, Marjorie Morningstar, and, if you need a good laugh, The City Boy. I've loved these books since I first read them years ago, and often share The City Boy with friends who need cheering up.
I watched 'Winds of War' when I was 13 and immediately read both Winds of War and 'War and Remembrance'. I wish that her interview had been more in depth. I felt it was condescending and patronizing, due to his age. Watch her body language and facial expressions. She failed to realize that Hermann Wolke WAS Aaron Jastrow.
