Thats because an OC'd 8700K has almost identical IPC to a 5800x3D the cache is doing that much heavy lifting or an alternate way of looking at it is that the 8700K would be that good with that amount of cache. Insane to think. *edit for reference both score around 580-590 single core score in CPUZ benchmark

Depends on use and how long you want to use it. I'm sitting on a 3700X and I can tell it's starting to have a few hiccups here and there, even at 1080p. My rig is 3 years old, and I'm contemplating a new build next year. Going another year or two would be too much and compromise my enjoyment. I could drop in a 5700X, 5800X or 3D, but by the time 2024/25 comes around, whatever's out then will be way better. And I just don't want to mess with the CPU that, even underperforming, still works. And if I do decide to sell it, I can sell the CPU, MB, and RAM as a 'matching set'.

Agreed completely, I upgraded from a 3950x to a 5800x3d cpu, on a x570 MSI tomahawk motherboard, 1+ year ago. GPU back then was the 3080. I downgraded the core count cause I no longer needed the extra cores for CPU crypto mining and mainly used my computer for gaming. When I slotted in the 5800x3d, my Rust gaming FPS went all the way from 80 to 160+, so it was an insane upgrade in terms of gaming smoothness. 6 months ago I bought a 7900xtx, sold my 3080. Then just beginning of oct 2023 I finally splurged $1000+ to upgrade to the 7800x3d, x670 Gigabyte Aorus Elite AX motherboard, and Team Group DDR5 32GB CL 30, 6000 Mhz RAM So the upgrade to the latest and almost greatest in gaming is pretty expensive, and most budget gamers should just stick to my initial upgrade and just upgrade the CPU from 3000 series to 5000 series.

I have a R5 3600, RTX 3080, 32 gb RAM, and pondered the drop in upgrade CPU. Then I watched videos of side by side comparisons of frame rates, with 4K (my resolution) most games had little to no change upping from the 3600 to a 5700 or 5800/x/3d. I've noticed the games I do have frame dips tend to lean on a single core vs multiple. I'm assuming something with a better clock vs more cores is what'd end up better. I could be way off base though. I am just unsure if dropping $200 or so on a cpu now will give me the benefit. I'm hoping 4 more years then do an uber badass upgrade.

Almost exact same situation but im an an ab350n in a fractal define nano. I'm sure a 3800x or even a 5800x3d coukd be a drop in upgrade but im concerned with the vrms, which already can get to 80 during gaming. Being in the tropics doesnt help. So in this case I'm more inclined to replace the board to facilitate an upgrade, or save and rebuild on a new platform.

I have a MSI B450 Tomahawk MAX with an AMD 3600X. The motherboard only has one m.2 slot which currently hosts my OS drive. I'm really bummed that I don't have another m.2 slot to fill with a new SSD Games drive. Should I move my Windows installation to a SATA SSD and start using the m.2 slot for games, as don't some of the newer PC titles require a m.2 SSD to work? I'm really tempted to change the 3600 to a 5800X3D or 5900X (8 vs 12 cores depending on how long I want this platform to last...).

Kind of in the same boat as I have been using AM4 3700X and a AMD 5700 card for the past 3 years at 1080p. Wanting to move to 1440p I recently went AM5 7900 and a AMD 6800XT with intentions of it being useable for at least the next 3 years. Same as the other user, Starfield was the kickstart to my movement. I of course had to purchase a high refresh rate (240Hz) Samsung monitor to compliment the package. It was a rather expensive upgrade, but this one should last a good while.

@bodasactra
@bodasactra 2 месяца назад
This one scares me. Starfield was intentionally gimped to sell hardware and it worked. Bethesda later released a patch that improved performance 20 fps+. The damage was done, many people upgraded. Its not the only new game to do this, come out high demand only to patch it away weeks after release. I believe Nvidia is behind it, they are worth trillions and have the kind of cash to pull this off.

True stuff IO been using ryzen since the 1600x release and upgraded to the 2600X the next year then to my 3800x back in 2019. I upgraded to my MSI GAMING EDGE WIFI X570 with the 3800X used the 3800X since last year. I got my RYZNEN 5800X OC @4.75GZ at 1.215V and temps are at 37 on idle and 67 on max. When I upgraded to my 5800X I immediately felt how different and how more respoinsive and cool that the 5800X is. I wpould've went with the x3D but lack of overclocking features and higher price point there's no point when I get simlar temps and can get x3d like performance while saving $30-$50. I'm using the NHD15 Air Cooler BTW.

I had a 3700x back when the game Sons of the Forest came out built on Unity Engine. That game made me upgrade to a 5800X3D. I already had a 6900XT for awhile, but that game was pretty demanding on the CPU side too. Just by popping in a 5800X3D after a Bios Update I gained +20-30 FPS and the 1% lows were much higher and stable. All settings exactly the same too and same GPU and everything else. A lot of the newer games on UE5 run better with 8 real / Performance cores from what I have tested. I still think the 5800x3d is great if you still have a full am4 platform and all you want to do is mainly Game. I use the 5800x3d for Unreal Engine 5.3 Rendering and creating scenes too along with the 6900xt overclocked to 6950xt performance. The full AMD build will tackle UE5 great. You don't need to have Nvidia either.

@georgwarhead2801
@georgwarhead2801 8 месяцев назад
the 3600/x aare not realy 2x3 cores. they are still on the same die, its just that the cache is split in 2, so the first 3 cores have access to the first half of the cache and the last 3 cores have access to the second half. if now a game was moved from working on the first 3 cores to the last 3 cores, the data had to be moved from the first half of the cache to the second one wich was a huge performance penalty. with the 5000 series ryzen, the cache got unified into one large cache where every core has access to the same data stored in the cache...back then the performance uplift from 5600 to a 5700 was not that big of a deal, but now with newer games loading 8 cores, the performance difference is bigger

Would check the cache also but 12th/13th i7/i9 have a good amount for gaming. If you could wait for 15th/Ryzen 8000 those should be better. But stepping up from 9th gen for me was noticeable. 7800XT or 7900XT are also decent options. Depends how much you want to spend, perfectly acceptible to hold for new cpu/gpu releases in the coming months also. Some people went with 13700K for 1440P Starfield and they seem content. I don't feel Nvidia included enough vram on the newer cards.

Thats an easy answer imo, go for the 5900X. Dont bother with a 6 or 8 core processor, we will see core bumps in the coming generations you dont want to be stuck with a 6 or 8. I own a 5900X and i play AAA games while streaming and its butter smooth.

My PC building journey began with intense frustration trying to play FFXIV on a laptop with an i5 3230M quad-core and HD4000 integrated graphics (dating from 2013). From there I built as my main gaming PC, in succession: FX-6300/R9-270X, FX-8350/R9-290 then two in Crossfire, Core i7 6850K/980ti's in SLI, Ryzen 7 1700/1080Ti, 3900X/2080ti, and now 13700K/6800XT. By far the biggest leap in user experience was from the 3230M to the FX-6300, as one would expect. I was playing at 1080p until the 6850K, then I went 3440x1440, which necessitated getting a 1080ti. The 3900X/2080ti made 3440x1440 100 FPS easy, and with the latest build I can play at 4K 100 FPS with settings maxed out. That all being said, last Black Friday I built a 5700X machine for audio work and upgraded my HTPC from that old 1700 to a 3600X. These are probably still the two best value CPUs available today (23 Oct 2023) on the still best value platform.

I'm in a similar position. I'm currently running a 5600 on a B450 with a 2070S GPU, and using the Wraith Stealth cooler. I've recently received, as a one off gift, $3k AUD. Whilst I could upgrade my current AM4, though I'd need a new CPU cooler, new GPU, and probably new PSU, I'm thinking of hitting up a 7800X3D and 7900XT based build. One reason being is I won't have this kind of money again, for a very long time, if at all, so whilst 'future proofing' is a bad idea, I need to consider a PC to play the same games as Adam, as well as MSFS 2024, at 1440 60 for longer than 2-3 years.

Solution depends if he aims more pretty graphics or fps, feeding his 165Hz screen. If graphics, in mentioned games his not so strong GPU won't let him go crazy with fps - it will be balancing prettiness to get acceptable framerate like 60 fps. In that case going AM4 and keeping it until next GPU upgrade is reasonable, will make nicely balanced build. But if he's from the kind prefering lowering settings to get 100+ fps, fastest possible AM5 makes more sense. High fps (100+) AAA gaming just demands more freqent CPU upgrades.

Wait the 5900X is 2 6 core chips and double L3 cache, That is only because each chip has 32MB L3 cache so not really double. Your channel talks about how so many games use more than 8 cores. That is pretty sad that no company Intel nor AMD have more than 8 P cores on a single chip/ring/CCD. Intle if the thread director 2 works real well and the extra threads do not need to fully saturate CPUs at least has all cores on a single ring bus. AMD better to stick with only 8 cores due to scheduling mishaps if gaming. The same is true for Zen 4 and will be for Zen 5 sadly. Intel thread director supposed to take care of gracmont being different but does not always work perfectly but at least it is a true more than 8 core CPUI. AMD its like dual 5600X or 5800X socket CPUs and not good latency for gaming as such.
