For some reason this was the only 70s Amicus anthology that I didn't see in a theater when it was new. On my first watch, I only liked the first story and the wraparound but I later came to enjoy them all. I still think the first is the best, and the second is terrific as well. Angela Pleasence, wow! And one thing about the twist, at least for me, it wasn't predictable ! Margaret Leighton was great in the third story but I wasnt really in the mood for a comedy. I thought the best thing about the last was the cinematography and art direction and the way they made the room seem so vast and creepy. I love Cushing in the linking story, I've used his "shouldn't have dun that" many times! Sad this series is over. Maybe in future you could do Mr. Subotsky's other anthologies "The Uncanny", "The Monster Club" and "Cats Eye"?. Maybe the fake Amicus "Tales that Witness Madness"? Pretty please???

Brilliant video as always. My favourite of the Amicus films. That ‘mirror’ story freaked me out as a kid and i remember laughing so much during the ‘elemental’ it might have been my favourite. Wasn’t sure how you said stories 2 and 3 didn’t relate to the shop items though. In 2 the man has to have the medal to relate to the Donald Pleasance’s character and in 3 it’s the snuff box that potentially ‘delivers’ the elemental to the poor guy. Loved that only the honest customer survives. Love the channel and your passion for all these.
@FatherofSerpents
@FatherofSerpents 2 месяца назад
Maybe the kid didn't wish for his parents to die, maybe he wished for a new family (because he hated all the fighting his parents were doing) so they had to wait until the daughter married the guy so that she'd have custody of the kid after they killed him. It's just a theory but it does explain the wait.

Why doesn't The Monster Club count as one of these anthologies, since Rosenberg and Subotsky produced it? Also, maybe Ian Bannen's stolen valor is an indication he is not an honest person and somehow "justifies" the son wanting both his parents dead. From what I remember, Gatecrasher and The Door were the standout segments for me.

@DamnableReverend
@DamnableReverend 2 месяца назад
I think this is my favourite of the anthologies from Amicus. I love R. Chetwynd-hayes approach. he's kind of like the previous generation's Clive Barker, in a way (glad you mentioned Hellraiser in connection with Gatecrasher; I thought so too!). Chetwynd-hayes really loves his "monsters" and many of his stories depict a kind of sympathy or brotherhood between them. I really like "The Door" segment personally -- I think that is the one of the four guys who was honest in the shop and he has a good relationship with his partner, which means they help each other solve the problem, unlike the other couples/shop visitors in the film. For me, it'sa very atmospheric closer to the picture, even if yes, I think taken on its own maybe it is the least substantial story. I also don't mind the shocking ending of the Act of Kindness segment. Personally I thought the guy trying so hard to impress the "Pleasances" was setting himself up for a fall to begin with. I mean yeah his wife was mean to him, but she wasn't entirely wrong either. He just blithely agreed to have her killed off. And the son (who the writer would identify with the "monsters" in his story) is witness to this terrible crap between his parents the whole time. But you know, it's interesting about these movies, there are times in Tales from teh Crypt for example where I'm not sure the "justice" meted out is really deserved, and perhaps there's room for debate over whether this guy deserved what came to him. But I love Angela and Donald in this segment. THey're so good. Angela is awesome in the role too and I don't think I could refuse her anything. The eccentricity is a big part of waht I love so much. Donald is also in the post-amicus anthology The Monster Club. Definitely should cover that one too if youw ant to. It's got the sillist wraparound but R. Chetwynd Hayes wrote the stories too, and they are all melancholy and funny and monsterful. And where else are you going to see elderly Vincent Price and John Caradine dancing to the groovy post-punk tunes?

I grew up with this one. It was regularly shown on the BBC back in the 80's. I first saw it as part of the old BBC2 Saturday night Horror Double Bills that were screened in the Summer months. This was the second feature after 'Curse of the Werewolf'. Happy days!! As far as I'm aware, this has yet to have a UK Blu-Ray release. The US Warner Archive release will do for now though. One of the boutique companies should release this one in a chunky big box Special Edition. I would be first in line to purchase this fantastic and best slice of Amicus. Even the 'Elemental' story is creepy AF at the end. Great review.

x I unfortunately was not able to watch Signs yet because of technical problems, I tried both Friday and last night. o I hope to watch it soon... x 4:50 Awesome reference to "Man in the Mirror" by Michael Jackson, he is the newest musical artist that I added to My Favorite Musical Artists list! x Awesome Monsters T-shirt! o I have some Monster Cookies (not sure if you are familiar with them) in the freezer and ate some during this video after seeing that t-shirt! x My friend, who I lived with in Omaha for years, and I used to go "antiquing." o The main place we went was the Brass Armadillo, a chain antique store across the country. o The Millers from Our 80s life, whom I did not know until a couple of years ago, actually do the same thing and prefer to go to the Brass Armadillo also! o Contrary to popular belief, when a person picks the right antiques for things like rooms it looks fantastic (not just older and more out of place like less skilled interior designers using antiques). o It is incredible what kind of awesome things a person can get at the antique stores, so many classic items! x 3:25 An interesting story related to this...there are a ton of cats around where I live (there is an actual "cat house") and one day a cat, who I had never seen before, shows up and starts to hang out all the time on the porch! o Since she just appeared out of nowhere and I wanted to name a cat for something related to Jodie Foster and her hit tv series True Detective: Night Country, I named her Jane Doe. o She stops by every day and jumps on a table...then she locks eyes on me and does a hypnotic stare all day long so she can get "treats" food I prepare. o Now when I get the "treats" she actually doesn't generally eat any of them, she strategically signals to get the treats and once they are on the ground allows all the other cats to eat them...kind of like providing for the rest of the cat clan in exchange for bonding with them. o I actually kind of feel bad for Jodie Foster because of it, there is a cool cat named Jane Doe that she doesn't ever get to be around (Jane Doe is a true blessing, what a beautiful and sweet cat!) x I added Motel Hell and From Beyond The Grave to my July Watchlist!

Now I’m looking for another movie I saw around this same time about a mannequin that comes alive and creeps toward the person asleep on the couch. It only moves when the person’s back is turned. When he/she turns around, the mannequin stops. Creeped me out as a kid and been stuck in my head without a title ever since. Any thoughts?
