Hello Skaters! Today is another Figure Skating History Lesson, this time about the evolution of the figure skate blade. It has gone through quite a lot of changes over the last thousand years, as has the reason people strap skates to their feet. I hope you enjoy this history lesson, and be sure to come back next week where I will be attempting to skate on a pair of skates from 1919!!

Even my 70’s Wifa boots are 30% heavier than today’s skates and we were doing triples and double axels !

You’re so soft and you teach for ice-skaters and to a beginner ice-dancer. I have no jump to make and it’s not what I love. I have to dance, ” What a feeling ” as a dancer, I’ve make a split down on the ice and I turn myself with my split and I ’m Rolling on the other side. I have to realize all I have to do to a real Show. My friends are Stars, May you Know Béatrice Dalle or Joey Starr..... Béa is my best friend and the only one . Your teaching is the better one 💪🎈❤

On Netflix, there is a movie called Silver Skates which shows skates that seem to be historically correct from around 1900 in Russia with the large curve at the blade's front. It shows how skating was part of Russian life as a mode of transport. Plus the overall movie is pretty good. :)

I really appreciated this. I know many people scoff at history, but this was so awesome! Thank you for the research put into this. It really helps with the appreciation of the sport and just the thought that in the last 100 years, though the outward tech has not changed, so much else has, we're putting in minute improvements to one day get the ultimate skates.

Interesting! Could you create another video explaining specific changes to the figure skates from the 1960s until 2022? Was carbon fiber added to the blades around 1990? I'm curious as to what Brian Boitano and Brian Orser would accomplish with pairs of figure skates from 2022.

Thank you for the informative videos! Your channel has exactly the kind of content I look for, it's informational, easy to understand, and applicable. I appreciate that you create content with the intention to help instead of click-bait. And speaking of blades, I was wondering if you could go over identifying and correcting pronation. I learned about pronation in one of your other blade videos recently, which finally explained why I couldn't skate straight in my new skates (but I could in the old ones)! The thing is, I don't know which way the blade should be adjusted ... Any advice from you, coach Julia, or anyone else here with the same experience would be deeply appreciated. Thanks!

Excellent history lesson, I never thought of skating on bones, my first skates were straped-on double blades. Coach, in your next video, using those old tyme skates, don't rehurt your ankle for the sake of this experiment...

Julia, Edea ice-skates are as Diamonds to me. I went to have it and when I’ll go to the rink , I hope it’s right. I show them but I Don’t seize it for my feet. I’m gonna make it and wait for the rink opened 🌬 Thanks my Coach 🤍

Hey Julia, I have my pair of Edea but I don’t feel right inside , May because it’s new. So, I’ve bought another pair of Edea and my feet are right now, then I’ve taken another one from Edea to my syntetic Rink. The first Edea are as an ring who’s brighting , my feet are right inside. I just can’t tighten them properly, the tongue is leather and I don’t know how to make this pair less hard to put on. The rink will open in June and when I knew it , I was such a baby. I make orders each day but now I’ve got 5 pairs and I’m gonna make my own rink a little bigger. May you help me for it and told me if Edea is the best for ice dancing because now,I’m not an absolute beginner. I wish you the best and I thank you to support me 🌬🤍🕯

Hey Julia, I’m sick somewhere ’cause when I believe in something, I go all the way. I have my first ice-skates Named Overture from Edea but those are too hard to wear, then I’ve buy another Named Motivo from Edea but it was not for now, so , I’ve buy another one from Edea named waves, it seems to me that, it’s okay but the rink ’s opening in june. I have three pairs of Jackson ice-skates and even 3 Edea ice-skates. I have to buy another Jakson to dance , May you tell me which one from Jackson because I have 150, 450 ×2 , and ?. I thank you to help me my dear Coach 🌬👼🤍

I suppose I'm a little picky about this as an academic, but if you do more videos like this in the future you should really provide sources, especially considering the sections that are direct quotes from Science Friday articles.

Yes! I was able to get them sharpened and skate on them! The blade held up fine during sharpening, but took quite a bit longer than normal, and they had to give it breaks as the metal was heating up
