In this video, we share some secret tricks to improving your still life and flower photography. We use the new Nikon Z8, the 24-120mm f4 lens, and the Westcott FJ80 flash.
HEY GUYS! TURNS OUT THE SYNC SPEED OF THE Z8 IS 1/200, NOT 1/250TH...THAT'S WHY WE SEE BANDING IN ONE OR TWO IMAGES when using flash. :)

Another technique: backlighting. Sunlight shining through flower petals and leaves makes them really glow. Plus you have fewer harsh shadows to deal with.

Omar, excellent thanks for sharing your technic. I like the idea of the umbrella, but flash photos are really nice. My problem is that I am not sure I know how to setup my flash in manual mode for the different lighting effects. I think you made a video on flash photographer, so may need to review that video again.

I'm kinda impressed with the 24-120 for macro shooting lol. I have the MC 105 but I could scale down and just use the 24-120 S. Hmmm, I wonder who else has done just that?
@MC-cz5ef
@MC-cz5ef 10 месяцев назад
well I have both lenses and while I love the 24-120s , the 105 mc is a true macro with a 1:1 true macro ratio magnification. The 24-120 does really well on close-ups but the 105 as you know is the true macro king :) My solution is carrying both in my bag

so.. i am on a Z7.. good camera, missing alot of the new autofocus items in the Z7II and Z8/9. Is the Z8 jump worth the price.. I shoot landscapes and airshows.. kind of on both sides of the autofocus spectrum.. but i make it work. Z8 is looking pretty enticing, but its quite the $$$ jump
@dunnymonster

I thought the Z8 had a 1/200th flash sync just like the Z9. Only the mechanical shutter nikons do 1/250th flash sync. Guessing your flash went into HSS at 1/250th 😉 Oh and shout out to the " You Like " at the end 😂

@JacekWPhoto
@JacekWPhoto Год назад
@@ogonzilla you mentioned at 6:16 that "one time" Nikon did not read out and you saw some stipes, but it was a not properly synced photo. On other photos with flash which are synced there is banding across the entire image visible from HSS flash pulsing and the electronic shutter not being able to work with it properly... Th exposure is OK, but there are stripes across entire image.

Really enjoyed the video Omar. Makes me want to go out and shoot flowers now hehe. I'm primarily a wildlife and landscape photographer and was wondering what number of exposures are you getting on the new Z8 on average per charge? Considering trading up my 7II for the Z8 and wondering if they are comparable as far as exposures per charge - thanks.

Unsuspected (because prejudice ;) ). Beautiful shots. If this is another "thing" of yours, then maybe your network can loan a Z 105/2.8S macro to you, for you to try and experiment with. That lens is phenomenal and shoots portraits beautifully too. It goes down to 1:1 reproduction ratio and with a proper adapter you can easily copy your 35mm film shots.
@ng6282
@ng6282 Год назад
Thanx for the vid! Can you confirm that the camera can natively sync at 1/250th (and did not switch to Hss mode)

Beautiful pics Omar! I didn’t realize that park was so close to home. Do you think that one misfire might have been related to the firmware of the FJ80 not being compatible with the Z8? Westcott only recently updated the firmware to be compatible with my Z9.

I love your videos and simple solutions/comparisons! Especially when shooting flowers or out of doors, Don’t forget reflectors,even a white washed wall or a buddy wearing a white T-shirt (standing nearby) can add a little light (or shade) to get that exposure. These days photo gear is really affordable (even high quality reflectors that fold up small). But DIY and impromptu “Macgyvering” is an important photo tradition. The great thing about reflectors (and gobos) is that they are easy and everywhere. I have used car sunshades, paper plates, tinfoil and poster boards from the dollar store all to good effect.

Small correction at the end, you got it backwards. With non Hss you can control your ambient exposure "alone" with shutter speed, once in Hss u will be affecting both flash and ambient simultaneously using shutter speed, aperture or iso adjustments..

Omar I’ve got the Z9 and although Nikon says it syncs at 1/250s I’ve had banding when using Godox flashes. I stick to 1/200s or lower unless going to hss, which I don’t like.

KZR83 The 24-105 is probably my favorite lens of all time. The photos I get with it on a Z6II being a half assed amateur are great. I have the 105 mc too but have to nudge myself to use it.
@kzr83
@kzr83 Год назад
@@tdalton854 yeah, I kind of want to skip the Z6 (mk1) and go straight to the mk2, mostly for the better AF. And I think I could be happy for a fair while with just the 24-120. In the future would add a 35 and an 85, but not sure in which order.

Pro tip: I had a very old phone with a camera. The photo's were of a low quality. I went to a second hand shop and got me some old fotocamera. I grabbed a hammer and smashed it to pieces to get to the lens. I placed this lens over the lens of the telephone camera and those pictures are of a better quality than those I see here. Plus you can see all details like all the hairs on a bee and take beautiful pictures of flowers.
