WEBINAR DESCRIPTION
This webinar will focus on the basic principles of psychoanalytic treatment of psychosis, developed by Dr. Knafo during her 40 years of working with psychosis in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
Dr. Knafo's approach to meeting the challenges of working with individuals experiencing extreme states focuses primarily on providing safety, forging a working alliance by meeting the patient where they are and allotting them maximum personal agency, understanding their symptoms as attempts at adaptation and restoration of the self, coping with loneliness, and working with the transference and countertransference. There is a focus on strengths as well as weaknesses. Most importantly, Dr. Knafo’s approach to therapy involves viewing the patient as a whole person rather than a collection of symptoms, prioritizing subjective experience and affect and on seeing the patient as a true collaborator in their own treatment. Clinical examples will illustrate her points.
The webinar is primarily designed to educate practitioners, however, persons with lived experience and their families may find it helpful as well.

As a carer in a family where psychosis has been part of life in successive generations, I find this illuminating. I find the observations you make about creativity of expression in psychosis exactly matches our experiences. I am sure this talk will resonate with all who have found the pharmaceutical faith in medication alone too limited. Thank you very much for publishing these ideas.

So much insight. I have had to struggle to make sense of my own psychotic experience over the yesrs. This resonates with me.

What if a person has real psychological problems? Where to go? Who to contact?

Thank you so much! Maybe it is from both sites -patients and GGZ - a form from fear with constant worry for a setback. It is as a chain reaction, an endless circle. Just sad that there is in such a way no trust from both sites. From GGZ site for a reversion, from patients site not to be trusted.

Regarding so-called 'delusions' of being a 'prophet' or 'spiritual leader' -- these could be spiritual awakenings: 'spiritual emergence" instead of 'spiritual emergency'. Perhaps, for example, give them help in reframing their beliefs from "I am Jesus' to "I am a carrier of the Christ Consciousness" -- which is the goal of real spiritual growth, and living in partnership with such a force answers many of the problems of life: partnership with a force 'greater than oneself' or Higher Power. That's completely 'normal' in spiritual communities. People rebalance at a higher level of existence then. Usually they are happier.

Why do people say 'biological' when they mean 'purely material'?
