It's not that we do not have enough resources it's knowing there are countries /people who hoard and also take from others when ideally you should have a sustainable system that is equal give and take and also planned well based off of the time it takes for a resource to replenish and replenish in an appropriate way... there are millions of ideas I am sure we have not tried yet... or at one point in history it was a thing a greed got the better of us I guess. I just don't get why people can not understand the extreme connection we all have and how important every single part of it is for them and for all. It's makes no sense to mistreat foundations if you are on top or vice versa. Every aspect has a role and should be appreciated fully, and shown that appreciation. But I still know nothing

Great presentations! I especially like the final one, Building a Better World. I just had a constant question pushing on my brain: what happens when "the powers" enact violence against the people BEFORE they become a resilient community? I'm going to play devil's advocate and express my doubts and fears, in hope to receive answers I couldn't get to on my own, or be made to notice some fallacies that might invalidate my preoccupations altogether :) So... In the presentation it is assumed that rent-strikers occupying buildings will mostly be left alone until they grow into a numerous and solid community, with its own "defenders"... and THEN a crumbling government sends in some police. I can't see this happening :/ I mean... isn't usually the case that such behaviors will trigger a violent response SOONER rather than later? What if, as it usually happens, the community is attacked before it properly takes root? When "the tide" is barely a splash? The preparations needed to turn a building block of miserable strangers into a tight and functional community based on mutual aid and somewhat independent micro-infrastructures is... long. Sure... rent-strike might be something one does only later on, when a truly collective action is possible, so that the whole block strikes at once. Until then, gardening and mounting some panels could go unnoticed. But after the strike starts, the landlord/company WILL take notice and send someone to sort it out. Then the "irregular uses of company property" will become an issue too. They might even be used as the "casus belli" the company needs to push for the eviction of the whole building (if rent striking wasn't already enough). Fire hazard prevention, you know? At this point the police will get involved to forcibly evict people... and if we imagine the people to be organized enough to rebuff the police... won't this lead to an escalation in violence where the military is eventually involved? What prevents this from happening? :( What can we do to delay/prevent such scenario?

I think that this may be too big a question for any one individual to have an answer to, and that's okay. Problems will always arise, and like any problem we rise to meet them with community, thought and engagement. If you'd like a community space to be able to discuss these problems further, the conference team can recommend the discord channel for Solarpunk, the Facebook group or the Reddit group. Let me know if you'd like these links. :) - Lindsay

There was a really interesting major rent strike in my town (Eugene, Oregon) a few months ago. The cops came, then the strike immediately regrouped and the tenant got back in the house. The cops didn't return for months, but when they did, they came at 6 am and had a huge force with 6+ cars, rapidly & completely blocking off both sides of the street so no friends or protesters could come in to help. Then a big secured fence with barbed wire went up. Still hoping the strike will regroup, but it was a fascinating case study. The positive goal was to get the out-of-state landlord to sell to the tenant. Or to a community land trust.

The way I see humanity evolving to be more human is to slowly and quietly start doing the work we need done, freely, for ourselves and others, forming a parallel consensual, voluntary, free government alongside the existing non-consensual, sometimes-forced, money-based one. There's nothing for that other government to complain about for the most part, since the more evolved government is not fighting against the old. In the same way that the small and furry beings didn't fight against the dinosaurs of old. The small and furry just evolved while the dinos went extinct because they were too big and dumb to evolve when the environment changed. Also, remember that all of the existing systems are made up of real individuals who have the same basic needs as everyone else, and so when we start providing those needs, for free, those individuals will slowly, but surely redirect their lifestyles to serve their own and others needs, instead of wasting their lives serving the profiteering, anti-social systems. I have several videos that talk about what this might look like on a basic level, if you're curious.

What if your ecosystem can't support these systems without fossil fuels? There are lots of places where the wind doesn't blow and the sun doesn't shine enough to support? What do we do with neighbors who don't want to enter into our mutual aid organizations or who exploit the resources provided to them (Tragedy of the commons issues)

One of the technologies heavily relied on here are photovoltaic solar panels, but many of these solar panels are only affordable today because of the immense effiecny of the neoliberal capitalist global system. How do we ensure that we maintain affordability in these high-end and high tech products while restructuring our society?
@timmygilbert4102
@timmygilbert4102 5 месяцев назад
Efficiency vs sufficiency, reorganizing society to be less demanding. Solar panels are design to sustain current lifestyle, the lifestyle is not efficient, making society not efficient. Thus solar panels are merely band aid, it's wrong efficiency. also solar Stirling is as efficient in energy conversion and need less HITECH contraception and less obscure resources.

@General8675 i wouldn’t say that this is completely true, the fact they are cheap is manyfold: technological knowledge, large scale/mass production, energy and material availability and social and environmental exploitation. some of these are interlinked with the capitalist system of course, but abandoning the underlying system will only change our ability to produce cheap solar panels to the extend we change the factors i named earlier. knowledge will remain, so will the factories, energy could become more expensive when fossiles are phased out quickly, but long therm not a big issue since solarpanels will produce energy. so social and ecological exploitation would stop making them more expensive to produce, however stoping exploitation has benefits compensating for loss of wealth due to higher costs. however wealth (cost) is not the true value we should be concerned with, happiness is. so even with a lower standard of living (energy being less available/more expensive) we can live a better life. especially reducing climate change impacts has great long therm value to peoples happiness as well as wealth.

Is planned obsolescence reality? How about the depreciation of durable consumer goods? Why does Net Domestic Product only have the depreciation of Capital Goods?
@General8675
@General8675 5 месяцев назад
Planned obsolence is a big problem in our manufacturing standards, many machines are made to be made once and only, never to be maintained over time nor to be easily repaired. Most of our electronics are that way.
@psikeyhackr6914
@psikeyhackr6914 5 месяцев назад
@@General8675 Planned Obsolescence is a nonexistent problem for our economists who cannot do algebra. The NDP equation only subtracts the depreciation of Capital Goods.

@@General8675 I have communicated with two dudes who claimed to be economists. They both started talking about titanium like I was implying that cars should last forever. I talked to a PhD economist personally and asked him how a gasoline engine worked. He couldn't even start explaining. I knew more when I was in 8th grade. The economics profession is in some Never Never Land where passing money around is all that matters. Consumer depreciation just creates employment which is mostly the point.
@General8675
@General8675 5 месяцев назад
@@psikeyhackr6914 Your point about economists is right. But the issue of intential planned obsolesce, and more importantly designing objects to not be repairable, is a longstanding and common sense one. Part of Solarpunk is rejecting this kind of cosumerist nonsens, because it hurts consumers! It makes a big difference whether you build things to last or to be repaired vs if you don't. Those costs on households are real.

listening to this, especially the final speaker, immediately reminded me of the Capitol Hill Atonomous zone, and the immense disaster that was. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-n4Yf2lW9JuM.htmlsi=pnqlF5NOPcXqT6w8 Its one thing to suggest to society that we move towards more sustainable living situations involving permaculture farming, completely another to attempt to eliminate the nucular family and completely resturcuture all of culture, politics, and society in combination with a move away from a futurist dystopia. Yes the threat of climate collapse is real. No, that threat will not cause humanity to turn away from traditional values and cutural norms. If anything, as the danger seems more and more apparent, those norms and values will grow in popularity and adhearance. The global populist movement currently in effect is direct evidence of that.
@vylbird8014
@vylbird8014 2 месяца назад
The CHAZ isn't really a good example of anything. A protest movement took control of a small area, but not for very long and as a spontaneous act with zero planning. For their brief existence they had to deal with local, state and even federal government threatening daily to send in armed police or even national guard to seize back control by force, and a few attempts by the local law enforcement agents to deliberately instigate a violent response from the protesters as a justification to do so. You can't really compare a short-lived, unplanned event existing in a state of siege with the idea of a planned sustainable community.
