From Computer to Lathe: Making Finials for a Mimbar

A friend of a friend was making a mimbar which is like a pulpit in a church but for a mosque and they asked me to make some finials to top the posts.
The finials were designed on computer in Fusion 360 with templates produced on a 3D printer and finally made on a Jet 1221vs wood lathe out of merbau.

Great finials mate, you could see how wet that wood was. I have not turned green or wet wood, but it does not look pleasant at all. Keep on turning. Cheers, Bluey 👍

Yeah its pretty rough with how sticky it became and how rough the wood was during the roughing out of the shape. Normally merbau cuts beautifully and produces some spectacular chatoyance. It should also be available in Australia as I know that I have gotten a few pieces from Bunnings at odd times.

Now you know that wet merbau is not good to work with and now I do too. Yes, Bunnings does have it, but mainly in decking or laminated posts. I will keep an eye out for some now.

Thank you, that project was interesting designing in CAD for a project that would be hand cut rather than done with a CNC because I needed to make sure that I would be able to do the finished piece at the end.
