VR Troopers (Virtual Reality Troopers) is a syndicated live action superhero-adventure television series produced and distributed by Saban Entertainment from 1994 to 1996. The show tried to profit from the fascination with virtual reality in the mid-1990s as well as the success of Saban's other property, Power Rangers.
Much like with Power Rangers VR Troopers was stitched together with Japanese stock footage from 3 different Metal Hero Series: Superhuman Machine Metalder, Dimensional Warrior Spielban, Space Sheriff Shaider

I worked at an FX shop that fabricated the costumes for “Mystic Knights of Tir Na Nog”. The same shop would occasionally have to repair the original costumes from the various Japanese shows on loan from Toei... those costumes always showed up battered beyond recognition, more duct tape and bondo than fiberglass and vinyl.

Often the costumes end up in the vicinity of Brazil and used in "circus" shows until they fall fully apart. I loved Magi Ranger and am glad to hear that the Oz family costumes were taken care of.

I remember watching this show right after reruns of Power Rangers weekdays afternoon. Always wonder why they aired only two seasons. Found out years later they just ran out of Japanese footage.

VR Troopers seems it has the potential of being almost successful as close to the next Power Rangers with the same team that made Power Rangers, but got canceled due to running out of the Metal Heroes footages, which is understandable that filming original footage is expensive depending on what they are trying to do. That is true, how long would Power Rangers would last and I like how Saban tested it out with VR Troopers by adapted like three Metal Heries series, which Power Rangers is the one that wins in the Bussiness aspect. I love both Power Rangers and VR Troopers because they are both enjoyable and they are similar to each other, but different.

New headcanon: Toy Galaxy is really cobbled together from two Japanese RU-vid channels - TilAllAreHasbro (toys) and Notice Me Optimus Senprime (cartoons), with Dan hired to localize the new show to a 30s-40s GenX market.

Funny to think that Brad Hawkins was lined up to be the White Ranger on MMPR whilst Jason David Frank was gonna do VR troopers but were both switched at the last minute.

He said that he was bummed to not get his own TV series, but in the long run, it turned out to be better for him. His show would have probably been forgotten while Power Rangers would have had a grand legacy... or... it was probably better on both ends. His return to Power Rangers probably had a lot to do with the continued success of Power Rangers.

The problem was the show "Cybertron" would have had legal problems with Hasbro who will do anything to protect the Transformers franchise. They would have had to rename the show. I think Jason David Frank did the right thing and stayed with Power Rangers. R.I.P. Jason David Frank.

Fun fact: The 3D comics by Phoenix Press try to provide an "in universe" reason for the Battle Grid, and the suits. And that is because the Battle Grid is supposed to be the virtual entrance to the lab, and the reason they have different suits is because lighter less restrictive battle suits are better for combat in the part of virtual reality where the Battle Grid is.

And the video touches on how this was originally a project for JDF,but saban ended up wanting him back for PR,since he was most popular as green.

@@qmchale5130 Yup. VR Troopers was made footage from Metalder, Spielban and Shaider. The 6th, 5th and 3rd Seasons of metal Heroes. Big bad Beetleborgs and Beetleborgs Metallic were made with Bfighters Kabuto and its sequel (who's name I have forgotten), the last and second to last season of metal Heroes

The biggest disjoint for me was when the two "sidekicks" JB and Kaitlin entered into a tunnel where it was bright and sunny. They exited the other side and it was snowing. Either that's a long ass tunnel, or they pulled a Narnia.

The moment they showed Shaider, which we grew up watching, we know that the show was a mishmash of properties. Same when Power Rangers and Masked Rider were advertised, we were already watching Super Sentai and Kamen Rider. But we still watched both versions, and loved both.

Saban and the producers screwed up during Season 2. They should have just wrapped up the story and had the VR Troopers discover that Carl Ziktor was Grimlord before the show ran out of Japanese footage. I'm still not over that, lol. Bad planning.

They had plans to continue the series with a mix of new original japan footage and american footage. The problem was they blew the budget on the mmpr movie and ratings weren’t good enough to get funding from networks.

@@jessebaker2769 *You know all that about VR Troopers, but consider the Beetle Borgs to be an abomination?* *That’s like saying you’re a huge fan of Steven Seagal but you think Bruce Lee is trash.* *VR Troopers wasn’t even popular and wasn’t on anybody’s radar - none of the kids I knew even watched that show and no one bought the toys - it was a lame discount Power Ranger show.* *Beetle Borgs on the other hand was a GREAT show and actually relatable to young kids, with interesting characters and a good plot line - the show was massively popular with kids and sold toys pretty well - it’s easily equal to Power Rangers in quality - it just didn’t go on as long.* *VR Troopers by comparison is actual trash.*

Fun trivia about the Metalder footage: if it looks familiar to anyone, there’s no surprise. The producer for it thought it would be a good homage to Shotaro Ichinomori’s Kikaider. As a result, the costume ended up with a similarly patterned design. Another fact about Metalder: it had 39 episodes due to being the darkest of the Metal Heroes series. This made it unappealing to younger audiences, and only made it to 39 episodes due to a production delay in its replacement. Today though, it is regarded highly as among the best of the Metal Heroes series. Fun what you find when you’re bored or want to research something further.

The only reason I knew that this and Beetleborgs even existed was due to my local Hollywood Video’s (which had to have been open for maybe five years before video stores got axed) extensive 90’s preteen shows collection (it was the mid 00’s, so I imagine it was just excess from bargain bins). I definitely rented all of them, had no idea what was going on (mid season eps), then forgot about them until I saw ads for metal sheriff figuarts years later. What a weird collection of shows...

People overuse the word 'dark' these days, but VR Troopers definitely was a darker kids show. One of the best episodes was "Nightmares". In one of Kaitlin's nightmares, she was too scared to save Ryan. RYAN: Kaitlin help me!! (More skugs surround Ryan) RYAN: Kaitlin!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (Skugs bumbush Ryan. Kaitlin wakes up) I'll never forget that. Intense.

I remember what happened after this show. Catlin Star, after the show, got a huge acting gig as Carly from "General Hospital" for years. Then she left the show and was replaced by Laura Wright. Recycling suits is a common thing in Kamen Rider & Super Sentai to save money. So it's not a surprise that VR Troopers did the same thing.

Dude I watched VR Troopers mostly for her. I also liked the show a bit more then Power Rangers but she was so hot that definitely made me more biased about it lol. The Kenner toys were cool too so that also helped.

As a fun addendum to this talk of Metal Heroes, Not only were several Metal Heroes series repurposed for US comsumption (the first three for VR Troopers, and a few more for Big Bad Beetleborgs and Beetleborgs Metallix), a Metal Heroes video game was, as well! Based on 1991's Metal Heroes series, Tokyuu Shirei Solbrain (Special Rescue Command Solbrain), this game was reskinned and rebranded from Japan's Famicom to US and Europe's NES, as Shatterhand! The character of Solbrain was replaced by Steve Hermann, NYPD, whose arms were ruined standing up to cyborg terrorists. The Army stepped in and replaced his ruined arms with cyborg arms that can shatter steel with a punch.

As a Brazilian born in the 80s, I had the opportunity to watch both Metalder and Spielban (marketed here as Juspion 2) before VR Troopers ever came to be (and, honestly, I was already a bit older than the target audience when it came to be), so it was always funny to see repurposed characters and scenes and to know exactly why they couldn't be together in battle. Still, I enjoyed the show for what it was. Funny as it seems, I never actually watched any episode from VR Troopers with the Shaider parts. But, again, Shaider itself, I had watched a few episodes when younger.

18:43 we here in brazil take it personally too... cuz we HAD tokusatsu shows airing over here before power rangers was a thing sentai, metal heroes, kamen rider... then Saban came... and that stopped being a thing... in fact, the final episode of Kamen Rider Black (the series that was addapted into masked rider) never aired BECAUSE of saban getting the license. To add insult to injury a team of brazilian devs tried to make an indie game love letter to sentai and toku, quite clearly inspired by the stuff that used to air here... and Saban SUED them over it, forced them to put a "Inspired by saban's power rangers" subtitle on it. ... Brazilian toku fans HATE Saban, many of the older ones I've known also despise power rangers and any of saban's other butchery works but younger ones (such as me) are willing to forgive the series itself... still hate saban tho.

@@AusSP Think they were also forced to pay royalties and give part of the profits, but of this I am not sure it was also PAINFULLY clear the game was a love leter to sentai specifically, down to its trailer being entirelly in japanese, and even its theme song being in the style of sentai openings (and also having japanese lyrics) Edit: the game also has Kamen Rider and Metal Heroes expies appear for short crossover stages :P

I was a big fan of Spielvan as a kid, and it aired on a network that was famous for tokusatsu series. When VR Troopers aired in a competitor network many years later, I saw Spielvan and said "Heeeey!"

The early localization of foreign properties in the West is endlessly entertaining to me, and VR Troopers is such a weird chimaera, it's just mind-boggling. I do not remember the exact year it was broadcast in Greece, but it was on weekends, just prior to Power Rangers. I think I liked it better, for its more "militaristic" villains, its vehicles and its themes. And, at the time I watched Return of the Jedi for the first time and I was absolutely thrilled, so the resemblance of Grimlord to Emperor Palpatine was noticeable for me. If you think about it (SPOILER ALERT if you need one!), the top general of Grimlord being Ryan's father who had "turned" and his old friend trying to empower his son to "absolve" him, is more than thematically relevant to RotJ. Oh, and 12-year old me had a crush on Kaitlin!

Although as an adult I wasn't a fan of Saban's methods, for some reason I tolerated VR troopers more than any of the other shows. Possibly because it aired right after SSSS M-F and it was a nice escape prior to heading off to college or work depending on the day

I watched VRT almost as religiously as Power Rangers when I was a kid and I always wondered why Ryan NEVER appeared in the same battle scenes with the other two, at least when they were in their armor suits. Never thought about it again all these years but now I know why. lol

Pokemon and its "clones" didn't come to the US until the tailend of the decade in late 1998. Digimon in particular came out in 1999 in the US. Meanwhile, TAS debuted from 92-95.

I’m not going to lie, I actually enjoyed watching VR Troopers even though it was Just another Power Rangers grab by our favorite children television show producer Haim Saban! I wouldn’t call VR Troopers the poor-man’s Power Rangers, that title firmly goes to Tattooed Teenage Alien Fighters From Beverly Hills. At the time I was a sucker for these Americanized Super Sentai style shows. I also liked Superhuman Samurai Syber Squad. I think it’s great that Toy Galaxy has gotten around to doing an episode on VR Troopers.
